3 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Times A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. (LUKE 6:43) Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name. TODAY S READINGS First Reading One s speech shows the bent of one s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading We are given victory over death through Jesus. THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. Lenten Penance Service Our Lenten Penance Service has been scheduled for March 13, at 7pm. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this sacrament. We will have several priests available. This year our 2nd grade students are required to attend the Penance Service to receive this sacrament. Paper Products Drive In thanksgiving to our brothers and sisters at St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Church for all of their generosity in giving to our food pantry, we would like to give back to them. We would like to take up donations for paper products for the use in their church. Items we are gathering are: paper plates, plastic cups, coffee cups, plastic ware, napkins or paper towels. Amen First Penance set for March 13 First Communion candidates who have completed their First Penance retreat will make their first reconciliation at the Lenten parish penance on Wednesday, March 13, at 7 pm. A parent will confess first then introduce the child to Fr. Martino for his/her confession. Please remember to bring the First Penance certificate you received at the February 23 retreat. If you missed the penance retreat on February 23, your child must make up the work within two weeks. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that children must go to the sacrament of Penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first time (1457). Second retreat mandatory for First Communion In order for your child to receive First First Holy Communion on May 5, 2019, he or she must attend a second sacramental retreat on April 13. This is a family event and both parents are required to be present with their child. Childcare will be provided for siblings. If you are unable to attend or need a makeup packet from the first retreat, please contact Linda Santos at Stations of the Cross begin March 8 Attendance at a minimum of one Stations of the Cross is required for Confirmation in December. If your child is a candidate for Confirmation in December, this coming Lent will be the only opportunity to fulfill this requirement in time. Excused absence policy Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence. With 165 kids in the program, it s impossible to keep up with verbal notifications. Thanks for understanding.
