We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God s values and not the values of the material world. FOLLOWING CHRIST If you ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God good one you duped me. We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is duping him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter who has just been made the foundation of the church out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named Satan today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death. 4 Knights of Columbus Breakfast Come join us for breakfast September 17 th between the 8:30 and 11:00 Masses. The Knights will be serving up eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and sausage. Cost is $5 per person with children under 10 free with a paying adult. We will move any kids who need to get to their Sunday school classes to the front of the line and parents can hang out while they wait for their kids to finish class. Tickets are on sale after each of the weekend masses. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge The Knights of Columbus will be holding a Soccer Challenge September 30 th. The challenge will consist of penalty kicks with different scoring zones. 5 The Discipleship Council will offer all SBCC parishioners a Bible Study starting on September 13. The Title of this study is: THE BIBLE and the VIRGIN MARY Exactly who is the Blessed Virgin Mary? Can you explain her role in God s plan for the world? Do you fully understand the vital role she plays in your life? Most Catholics know Mary is important, but do we fully grasp how essential she really is? Using 30 minute DVDs in each session, the Mary of doctrine and devotion comes alive, you will experience Mary as you ve never experienced her before! The Bible and the Virgin Mary unveils the mystery of Our Lady that is woven into the fabric of Sacred Scripture. Based upon Dr. Scott Hahn s book, Hail, Holy Queen. Author & speaker: Matthew Leonard. Classes will be held every Wednesday at 7 PM at the faith formation building with 1 to 1 ½ hour Sessions. Study duration: 12 weeks (Sept. 13 through Dec. 6, 2017). VIRTUS Protecting God s Children for Adults Training will be held at St. Matthew Church (Statesboro), 221 John Paul Ave. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 9:00 AM -12:00 noon. Registration is required prior to attending via online at VIRTUS.org to receive credit for the session. No one under the age of 18 is allowed due to the sensitive subject matter. Please arrive early no admittance once the session begins. Thanks and enjoy the last days of your summer! The Story of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Church has celebrated Mary s birth since at least the sixth century. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. Scripture does not give an account of Mary s birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will advance God s plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special presence of God in Mary s life from the beginning. Saint Augustine connects Mary s birth with Jesus saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed. The opening prayer at Mass speaks of the birth of Mary s Son as the dawn of our salvation, and asks for an increase of peace. We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work. The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God s love and peace to the world. This is all true in a magnificent way in Mary. If Jesus is the perfect expression of God s love, Mary is the foreshadowing of that love. If Jesus has brought the fullness of salvation, Mary is its dawning. Birthday celebrations bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large. --franciscanmedia.org
