2 April 22, th Sunday of Easter I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep and they will heed my voice. - John 10:14-16 When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Yet it s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world s crops and livestock. This week s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John s letter we hear that we have become God s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God s beloved flock? Steven Liebl TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord s Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn t take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. 4 Save The Date! Parish Picnic Saturday, May 12, 11am-3pm We will have hot dogs, hamburgers, games, contests, a water slide and lots more for a day of fun. It will be held on the grounds of St. Boniface. Altar Server Training Training for new altar servers will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. New servers need attend only one session. Each class will last about two hours. Both youth and adults are welcome. Youth need to be in at least the third grade. All servers need to have received at least the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. Nursery Help Needed We are in need of people to help in the nursery, adults must be Virtus trained and youth age 15 and up are welcome to apply. This is a paid position. You must be available to work on Saturday evenings from 4:00 pm to 6:15pm and Sunday mornings from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm. Additional hours include parents night out, and other functions that may require the nursery to be open for parents to attend activities within the church. Through your generosity, we have been able to achieve 80% of our target goal for the Bishop s Annual Appeal! 5 Perfect attendance awards Only two more classes -April 29 and May 6 - until the end of the 2018/19 Faith Formation session. As in previous years, Fr. Martino will hand out awards to students with perfect attendance for the entire year and for second semester. You must be present at the last class to receive an award. To qualify for perfect attendance for the year or for second semester, a student must have attended every class. Perfect attendance with only one excused absence is also eligible. Coming soon: expanded library Thanks to the generous donations of parishioners and to Charline Reynolds for contributing a second book shelf, we will have an expanded Faith Formation library this summer. The library is located to the left of the door to the adult Faith Formation room. Check it out sometime. Don t toss Decision Point workbooks! Parents of seventh-graders: we can save the parish some money by making sure kids return Decision Point workbooks to the DRE for safekeeping over the summer so they can reuse them in eighth grade. Catholic Focus Catholic focus will not meet this Sunday, April 22 in order to attend the newcomers breakfast. The Catholic Focus class for adults meet each Sunday. The classes use the Living the Good News curriculum based on the Lectionary readings for that Sunday. The lessons not only aid in understanding of the Scripture but also help to apply Biblical principles to everyday life. Please join us Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45 in the Catholic Focus room in the Faith Formation Building. Remember your Faith Journey doesn t end when you become an adult! Baptism Class Sunday, April 29 12:30-3:30 St. Boniface will hold a baptism class for first time parents on Sunday, April 29, 12:30 3:00 PM. Please sign up by Sunday, April 22, to receive the required class material. You must be registered in the parish and have met with Fr. Martino prior to taking the class. The next classes are being held in Grovetown on May 3 and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base Chapel on May 24. When training is available in our area they will be posted. You MUST log in through VIRTUS website to receive credit for session at *Diocesan policy requires all diocesan adult employees and volunteers attend VIRTUS (safe environment) awareness training, undergo a background check, and read and sign the diocesan code of conduct for working with minors prior to commencing their ministry. June 11-15, 2018 All children Pre-K thru 6th grade are welcome to attend. Youth 7-12th grades are encouraged to be youth helpers. Adult volunteers are welcomed, all volunteers must be Virtus trained. 6 St. Boniface Brick Program St. Boniface is once again selling personalized bricks that will be installed in St. Boniface s patio. Take a look at our patio that is located on the side of the Hall across from the children s playground. What a wonderful and lasting way to honor or memorialize a loved one or to commemorate a special event such as a birth, baptism, first communion, confirmation, graduation or wedding!! All proceeds from the Brick Campaign will go toward the building fund for our new Church. This Brick Campaign order period ends May 26, 2018.
