In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. One of the converts was a poor Aztec Indian named Juan Diego. On one of his trips to the chapel, Juan was walking through the Tepayac hill country in central Mexico. Near Tepayac Hill he encountered a beautiful woman surrounded by a ball of light as bright as the sun. Speaking in his native tongue, the beautiful lady identified herself: "My dear little son, I love you. I desire you to know who I am. I am the ever-virgin Mary, Mother of the true God who gives life and maintains its existence. He created all things. He is in all places. He is Lord of Heaven and Earth. I desire a church in this place where your people may experience my compassion. All those who sincerely ask my help in their work and in their sorrows will know my Mother's Heart in this place. Here I will see their tears; I will console them and they will be at peace. So run now to Tenochtitlan and tell the Bishop all that you have seen and heard."

5 ST. NICHOLAS PARISH BREAKFAST Saturday, December 15 9:00 AM EVERYONE is invited to celebrate the Christmas season at our Annual St. Nicholas Parish Breakfast! Come and enjoy delicious pancakes, sausage, snowman soup (hot cocoa), and coffee for the adults. We will have a visit from St. Nicholas! Also during the breakfast, we invite each new family/single or those who missed it in previous years, to pick up a Chrismon to take home and decorate. A Chrismon is a Christmas decoration that uses Christian symbols to represent our Lord Jesus Christ. We ask that you return it to the church no later than Sunday, Dec. 23. They will adorn our parish family Christmas trees. Children s Christmas Pageant Sign Up It s that time of year again, beginning Saturday November 17 children are welcome to sign up for the annual children s pageant performed during the Christmas Eve Mass. The sign up sheet will be in the church vestibule through December 9th. This year we welcome all children Pre- K through 6th grade to perform. Additionally, we are in need of a minimum of 4 middle school students to narrate. There will be 2 practices: December 16 following 11am mass and December 18 at 7pm. The narrators are required to attend both practices and all children are required to attend at least one practice. Next Wednesday, December 12, will be the last day the outreach assistance office will take applications for Christmas food baskets and children s gifts up to age 10. If you or someone you know is in need, please refer them to the Outreach Assistance Office. We still need items to prepare the Christmas baskets: Canned green beans, corn, fruit cocktail, beef gravy packet, cream of mushroom soup,& French fried onions. Excused absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence.
