3 January 13, 2019 Baptism of the Lord John answered them all, I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit... (Luke 3:16) The Catholic Catechism states that Jesus immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God s will. In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus the gift of ourselves. CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue (cf. Deuteronomy 16:20) was chosen for its powerful message of promoting truth, equality and unity. The initial work on the theme for this year s Week of Prayer was prepared by a group of representatives from different parts of Indonesia, including the Communion of Churches in Indonesia and the Indonesian Catholic Bishops Conference. The texts were finalized during a meeting of the International Committee of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Fr. Tom Orians, SA Associate Director of the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute noted, Every year, Christians across the world gather in prayer for growth in unity. We do this in a world where corruption, greed and injustice bring about inequality and division. We are called together to form a united witness for justice and for Christian Unity that becomes a means of Christ s healing grace for the brokenness of the world. Only by heeding Jesus s prayer that they all may be one can we witness to living unity in diversity. The Christians of Indonesia found that the words of Deuteronomy, Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue (cf. Deuteronomy 16:18-20) spoke powerfully to their situation and needs, and recognized this common need throughout the world. The traditional period in the northern hemisphere for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18 to 25. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Servant of God, Fr. Paul Wattson, Founder of the Society of the Atonement, to cover the original days of the Feasts of the Chair of St. Peter (January 18) and the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25), and therefore have a symbolic significance. Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism.at any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. Each winner receives a prize of $25 and their posters advance to the state competition to represent our district, where we wish them well. The BAA will begin the weekend of January with this year s theme, Who Is My Neighbor? Our parish goal this year is $29, With your help, we can assure the continued support of many important programs that help thousands in our diocese each year with education for children, and seminary students, evangelization and Christian initiation, ongoing formation for the clergy and more. Traditional prayers are a time-honored part of our Catholic heritage and an essential component to being ready for First Communion in May. Please make sure your child is prepared. Attention, Pre-K parents Please encourage your child to use the bathroom before class. Group bathroom visits during class create a disruption and cut down on learning time. Thanks for your cooperation in this. New penance policy Per Fr. Martino, Faith Formation penance will no longer be held during class time. Parents are invited to bring their children with them to parish penance services held during Advent and Lent. Or you may bring your child any Saturday from 4 to 4:30 pm to the confessional in back of the parish hall. Fr. Martino is always available for confession on request. To schedule, call him at Absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence. Virtus Training The VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children for Adults" training will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 7020 Concord Rd., Savannah. This class has content not suitable for young children. Childcare is NOT provided, so please make arrangements accordingly. No one under age 18 will be admitted due to sensitive subject matter - no infants, no toddlers, no children, no teens. You MUST log in through VIRTUS website to receive credit for session The class will start promptly at 5:30 pm. Once doors are closed no late admittance will be allowed. This training is required for all who provide either paid or volunteer ministry in our diocese who in the course of their ministry come into contact with minors.
