2 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 1 John 4:15 How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to defend your faith or clarify a question about your faith, do you do it? Or, do you remain silent so that others don t think you are weird? PRAY for the courage to be strong in your faith and share your witness with others. When we become Christians, we RECEIVE the Holy Spirit. God's Presence in our lives is proof that we really belong to Him. *And when we belong to Him--we become more aware of others--that is largely what belonging to God means. Do we recognize this? *He also gives us the power to LOVE (Romans 5:5, 8.9;2 Corinthians 1:22). *Rely on that POWER as you reach out to others. As you do so you will gain confidence. Martino will have a special Mass for these graduates on Sunday May 31st at the 11 am Mass. They will be presented with a certificate, a check and Fr. Martino will take them out to dinner in honor of their graduation. We wish you the best of luck where ever life takes you. My daughter brought them back from Italy for me and they were blessed by the Pope. It would mean so much to me to have them back. Gearing up for VBS July 6-10, We are gathering together items for this year s theme Surfing with the Son and are in need of Donations. Call Lisa Ganser at St. Boniface Youth Group Provide Breakfast for the Homeless On March 1st and May 3rd the youth of the St. Boniface Youth Group prepared and served breakfast to approximately 200 homeless men and women in Savannah. They whipped up the eggs, flipped the pancakes, and cooked the sausage as well as served the needy with smiles and conversation. But their work wasn't done until they cleaned up and put the kitchen and dining room back in order. The youth have chosen feeding the homeless once a quarter as their mission. Thank you to those parishioners that donated breakfast items. Great Job Youth! PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to proclaim the gospel to every creature. For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God s family in worship and praise these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in claiming marriage as a focus of attention and care. Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, citizens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a traditional ceremony, it was home based and optional. The ceremony was for showing the social status of the families involved (the procession ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father s control to her husband s. The big moment of the ceremony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride s donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household s gods. Christians found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family matter, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and sometimes recommended that the couple seek the advice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn t recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Christians followed the customs of the day, but they knew that custom and relationships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their baptism. Outwardly, Christians married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ s presence. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Pope Francis, July 26, 2014 Angelus This workshop will provide leaders with: A better understanding of today s parents; Strategies for reaching out to parents and ways to support them in deepening their own faith; The Church s vision for family from Scripture, Church teachings, the Synod on the Family, Pope Francis; Strategies to strengthen family faith at home and in the parish; Ways to involve parents in faith formation, sacramental preparation, and youth ministry; Strategies for engaging families through technology; Strategies for motivating families to do service and outreach together. The workshop is designed for all parish, diocesan and Catholic school leaders whose ministries touch the family including pastors, deacons, pastoral associates, coordinators of youth ministry, leaders in faith formation and catechists, sacramental preparation leaders, family ministers, service/social concerns leaders, Catholic school principals and teachers. Grief Workshop: Walking the Pathway of Loss The Diocesan Office of Family Life and Island Hospice will present a free five week grief workshop at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 2170 E. Victory Drive, Savannah, GA 31404, starting Tuesday, May 26 and concluding on June 23. The program will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 and to 7:30 PM. Dr. Owen Tucker, M.Ed., D. Min. and Stephanie May, MPS will be the presenters. Grief attaches itself to all kinds of loss in varying degrees: the death of a loved one, miscarriages; divorce; the long good-bye of Alzheimer s; empty nesters; and many more. While this series will focus primarily on loss by death, those experiencing other types of loss will also find it helpful. These seminars outline the patterns and processes of the grieving experience The five week program Grief: Walking The Pathway of Loss, will cover the following topics: Normal Grief Reactions, How People Grieve Men, Women, Children, Specific Topics for Group Interests, Recovery is Possible, and Finding Meaning in Death. 6 Faith Formation News Celeste Gish-DRE Congratulations, Confirmandi! Thanks to everyone who made our Confirmation Mass such a memorable occasion. It was a team effort on the part of eighth-grade catechists Lynn Duncan and Pat Galasco, Bishop Hartmayer, Fr. Martino, Fr. Joseph, Fr. Lamb, Deacon Rafter, our choir and organist, lector, ushers, greeters, altar servers, parents and other parishioners who donated their time and talent. Special thanks to CCW for the reception; Monica and Joe Bahm for dinner and floral arrangements; and Joe Colanero, our photographer. Our Youth will continue to meet throughout the summer in the annex on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Catholic Focus Immediately after 8:30 a.m. Mass each Sunday (9:30 a.m.), adults of all ages meet in the Education Building in the Catholic Focus classroom. We study and discuss how to apply the scriptures from the Masses to our daily lives. Classes are led by dedicated Catholic Catechist Disciples. We encourage you to become part of this loving group.
