St. Mary School Saints Corner: For all the bad leaders in the Church that we hear about in the media these days, there have been far more good shepherds. One such shepherd is one that many of you reading this know is St. John XXIII. He was born in northern Italy in His parents were simple farmers. Angelo Roncalli (his real name) was ordained to the priesthood in He became a bishop in Roncalli was also drafted into military service twice, the second time came as a priest during WWI. St. John was a chaplain to the troops, many of whom had come from simple backgrounds as he did. Roncalli developed the heart of a pastor as a result of his ministry in the army. He was promoted to the diplomatic corps with assignments to Bulgaria, Turkey, and France. He acted in his post not as a diplomat, but as a pastor. His friendliness and pastoral concern overcame religious prejudices. In his time in France, he had saved the lives of many Jews through the forgery of baptismal documents, showing that Jews were baptized Catholics. Eventually he was appointed as Archbishop of Venice and raised to a cardinal. In 1958, Roncalli was surprisingly elected as pope. Another surprise was his decision to call a general council, a move that was unexpected and had not been done in almost 100 years. Pope John s purpose of calling the council was to tackle a concern that had not been on the mind of the Church ever the world. The Holy Father would not live to see the council s completion, as Pope John died in His feast day is Thursday, October 11. St. John s legacy is that of a shepherd and a bridge builder (pontifex), whose desire was to bring the Good News to a broken world that needed to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. School News: The highlight over the last week was the 8 th graders completing their Kayak trip through Rutabaga in Madison. This long standing tradition incorporates team building, trust, and leadership to help our 8th graders become true examples in the school. The trip, originally scheduled for early September, was delayed due to some of the flooding. Friday, 9/28, was also spirit day at the school and white and blue flooded the hallways, including our pep rally, that helped to launch the cross country team off on their home meet. World s Finest Chocolate: Thank you to everyone who helped support our chocolate sales! We are expected to make around $3000. The school office will be selling off the remainder of the chocolate in the upcoming weeks if you did not get your fill. Steeple Chase: Sign-ups are available for the annual Steeple Chase (10/14) at Riverside Park. This is a long standing tradition of the St. Mary s Community. The fun run/walk 5k is designed by families, for families. We would love to see all of you there! Upcoming Events: 10/10: Student led mass (8:15) 10/11: St. Joseph Invite (cross country) 10/12: Teacher In-service (no school) 10/14: Steeple Chase Respect Life Collection: You will notice some information in our bulletin regarding this collection. Respecting life is not restricted for unborn children, but it is intended for all stages of life the elderly, the sick, the poor. Respecting life is not an ideological issue, but rather it is a God issue. Funds collected will go towards the various ministries geared toward building a culture of life. Please pray about what you can give toward this collection. Thank you. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." - Mk 10:7-9 ************************************************************** "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back than the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female... the two shall become one flesh... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Knowledge is key in providing support, empowerment and care for someone with dementia. Caring for someone with Alzheimer s disease and related dementia can be a challenging task. Caregiver Boot Camp is designed for any family member/ care partner that has questions or concerns about supporting individuals in their family with memory loss or simply want to know more. Program is available regardless of where their loved one lives and is completely free of charge. Pre-registration is required by October 11th. Call Cori Marsh at to register by phone. Fall Cleanup Notice The Madison Diocesan Cemeteries (including Mount Olivet in Janesville) are getting ready to begin their annual fall cleanup. All grave and crypt de cor that families wish to retain should be removed by October 14th. Winter de cor may be placed beginning November 16th Flags may be placed for Veteran s Day, November 11th. Contact the office for more information The ADULT CATHOLIC SPIRIT CLUB will meet at noon, Wednesday 10 October 2018, at St. John Vianney s Marian Hall. A potluck dinner will be served and you are asked to bring a dish to share, along with your own table service. We had a wonderful turnout for the September meeting and this month s program will be another standout featuring the Janesville Performing Arts Center (JPAC). Nathan Burkart, Executive Director, JPAC, will discuss the future direction of JPAC and how they strive to bring creative programs to our diverse community. Janesville is fortunate to have a venue that provides a high level of entertainment for its citizens. Blood pressure screenings will be offered from 11:30 am to 12 noon.
