2 Kids Korner News & Notes Sharing the Gospel SCRIP FOR SUMMER At a very old age Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah prayed for a son. When Zechariah did not believe that God could give them a baby, God took away his voice. After their baby was born, Zechariah agreed to name him John. Then God gave him his voice back. Believe that God can answer your prayers. If others say that what you are trying to do is impossible, remember all things are possible with God. SCRIP cards are available for purchase after Mass twice per month.. next up, the weekend of July 7th/8th and 21st/22nd. If you find you can t make your purchase after Mass, SCRIP can be picked up at the rectory Monday thru Thursday from 10 am-2 pm, generally. Please call that morning before making the trip to be sure someone will be available to assist you Prayer Lord, help me do what others believe is impossible. Thank you for supporting your parish and school! Something to Draw Draw Elizabeth and Zechariah with their new baby boy, John the Baptist. Simply Giving Mission for the Week I will help my brother and sister do something that is difficult for them. St. Mary Parish offers a variety of ways for you to make donations to the church. Weekly envelope packets are mailed out when you register. Temporary envelopes are available at the church office or simply put your donation into a plain white envelope with your name on the front. Your donation will be credited to your account for tax purposes. You can make donations with your credit card. (Visa and Master Card are accepted) You can also sign up for automatic withdrawal from your checking or savings account. Both of these options are secure and in each case you will not have to worry about transporting your donation envelope to mass on Sunday. Using your credit card or automatic withdrawal can be done regularly at the beginning of the month, the middle of the month or donate semi-monthly and have the payment drawn twice a month. Credit card transactions and automatic withdrawal transactions can be arranged by filling out a form and bringing it to the church office or calling Arwen Twitchett at extension 11. Whatever way you choose to support your parish financially, we thank you for helping to care for your parish. He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. - Lk 1:62-64 ************************************************************** Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ. Please note that we are changing our discussion dates; beginning in June we will meet on the third Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at the rectory. We will be taking off the month of August and start up again in September. July 16th Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. We will follow the discussion with a com parison between Kristen Hannah s two books Winter Garden and the Nightingale. August no book club. September 17th Mark your calendars. The book will be announced at the July meeting. Centering Prayer A Centering Prayer Group meets each Monday morning at 11am in the Nativity House of St. Mary Nativity Church. We invite you to come and join us for this half hour of prayer. Centering Prayer is silent prayer which facilitates the development of contemplative prayer by preparing our body, mind and spirit to cooperate with this gift. It is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; it simply puts other kinds of prayer into a new and fuller perspective. During this time of prayer, we consent to God s Presence and Action within. We invite you to come and check out the process and see if this kind of prayer helps you to become more deeply engaged with the Mystery of God s Presence. Contact Rose for more information SERVER APPRECIATION DAY THURSDAY, JULY 19th St. Elizabeth s Nursing Home is in need of volunteers. We are looking for caring and compassionated individuals to be a part of the St. Elizabeth Home Family. While answering phones, greeting visitors and visiting with our residents you are able to be a positive presence in our Home and a ray of sunshine to brighten our resident s days. The combined Knights of Columbus councils of St. Mary's and St. Patrick's will honor the altar servers of our parishes with a ball park picnic at Telfar Park in Beloit. The event will include a picnic / tailgate party in the parking lot and the Beloit Snappers baseball game. Servers will be free, others including family members and men interested in the KC will be $10 including the tailgate picnic and admission to the game. SPIRITUS Igniting Faith in Catholic Youth Janet E. Smith is the author of several books and many articles. Her latest book is Self-Gift: Humanae Vitae and the Thought of John Paul II. Ignatius Press will soon be publishing a second collection of articles written by others on Humanae Vitae entitled Why Humanae Vitae is Still Right: A Reader.
