When Jesus says paradoxical things like this, we can still trust him. Even when he makes claims that, at first glance, seem impossible, we know that he's not talking gibberish. Why? Because Jesus lived the ultimate paradox: he brought life out of death. His resurrection proves for us that things are not always as they appear. The Crucifixion, which looked like the end of Jesus' influence, was actually a tremendous new beginning. So when Jesus promises that we will find life through a kind of death, we shouldn't question his claim. Of course in today's Gospel, Jesus isn't necessarily talking about physical death, although the "red" martyrs who suffer for him do in fact find their reward in eternal life. "White" martyrdom, on the other hand, is a kind of death to self that doesn't involve bloodshed. It means putting love and generous service ahead of our own self-gratification. It means doing these things for the sake of Christ. When he tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, this is what he's talking about. So, how can we be white martyrs today? How can we sacrifice our desire for perfect comfort, or entertainment on demand, or status or pleasure or sleep or whatever else for the sake of serving another person? In our families, in our schools and workplaces, in our parishes, in our neighborhoods and our communities, there are myriad opportunities to "lose our lives" for the sake of Christ. But don't forget, in dying to ourselves, we will find our lives in a new way! The fulfillment Christ offers us in return, both now and in eternity, will be far better than anything we try to cling to on our own. Infant Baptism: Registered members of the parish are welcome to arrange for their baby s baptism by signing up for the necessary preparation program for parents. 5 What s Happening Taize Prayer Prayer is a serene force at work within human beings, stirring them up, changing their hearts, never allowing them to close their eyes in the face of evil, of wars, of all that threatens the innocent of this world. From it we draw the energy to wage other struggles, to transform the human condition, and to make the earth a place fit to live in. ---Brother Roger of Taize Taize Prayer began in the little community of Taize, France during the 1940s following the destruction of World War II. A group of religious men sought to create an ecumenical form of prayer that would foster reconciliation and peace among all people. Today, Taize Prayer is celebrated throughout the world, bringing Christians of all traditions together to sing, to hear God s words in Scripture, and to listen in silence for God s voice in their hearts. In that spirit, we gather at St. Mary s as we have for more than a decade, to offer this prayer. You are invited to experience Taize Prayer here on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. You will find it an opportunity to take a few moments from the busyness of your life and simply be in God s presence. Come, experience Taize Prayer on Monday, July 10, at 7:00 PM at St. Mary s. Our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and simply be in God s presence. Come and bask in the light of candles, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, and listen in silence for God s voice. Taize Prayer is offered on the second Monday evening of each month, year-round. Dear Parishioners, On behalf of Unbound, thank you very much for welcoming us to your parish. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the generosity you have shown to the children, youth and the elders in our sponsorship program. Through your willingness to partner with Unbound, your parish community has taken steps toward a closer walk with Jesus in the name of the poor. We pray that members of your parish community who answered the call to sponsorship will be richly blessed by their experience. To all parishioners and those seeking prayers, be assured that the Faith Sharing group at Nativity of Mary seeks God s help in all your requests, as we pray weekly. The Tuesday Faith Sharing group will be held in the church hall for the summer months. Please contact Rose McLaughlin at if you are interested in joining us, or have any other questions. 5
