2 News & Notes News & Notes St. Mary School Area Catholics to lay their beloved shepherd to rest. Catholics of the Diocese of Madison will solemnly lay Bishop Robert C. Morlino to rest on Tuesday, December 4th. Spirit of the Season! In preparation for the upcoming celebration of the birth of Jesus, students from St. Mary s will be collecting donations throughout Advent. We are inviting St. Mary s Parishioners to help us overflow our boxes. We will be collecting baby items (diapers sizes 1-4, wipes, and sippy cups) the week of December 3rd-7th, can fruit and vegetables during the week of December 10th-14th, and pasta and sauces during the week of December 17th-20th. Boxes will be placed in the school s foyer. As always, there will also be the mitten tree for families in need through E.C.H.O.! Bishop Morlino died on Saturday, November 24th, at the age of 71, at SSM St. Mary s Hospital in Madison. Arrangements are detailed at the diocesan website Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Incense Alert! This Sunday is the beginning of a new year and a new season Advent. With special seasons like Advent, incense is used as a visual aid to remind us of the sacredness of this holy season. Things are different as servers like to tell me. SCRIP REMINDER SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers.. grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more! Beginning next weekend, incense will be used at the 4:30 and 10:30 Masses. As always, the 8:30 AM Sunday Mass is incense free. We will use incense from next Sunday through Sunday, January 6, which is the Epiphany of the Lord. SCRIP cards are available for purchase in the school office and after Mass twice per month.. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." - Lk 21:27-28 ************************************************************** Tribulation. Wildfires. Tsunamis. Moral corruption. Disease. War. We tend to associate these things with the end times, and perhaps for good reason! In today's Gospel, Jesus says: "People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world." Not exactly putting us in the Christmas spirit, is it? During Advent, we anticipate a celebration of Christ's first coming. There is a quiet stillness about our waiting, or at least we try to encourage that in ourselves. Perhaps we have an Advent devotional or we take time to pray together as a family around the Advent wreath. But Jesus did not come only once into history. During Advent, we remember that he will come again. You may remember the rapture craze in the early 2000s, when a series of books and movies envisioned a future where Jesus was coming soon and all the true believers had been whisked away. Everyone else had one more chance to repent before things really went to hell...literally, in this case! But is that what Jesus is talking about here? The truth is, we don't know what Jesus' Second Coming will be like. The actual return of Christ - though sudden and perhaps frightening to some - should not frighten us. Despite all the stories we may have heard about the apocalypse, the advice of Jesus is not to hang our heads or cower in fear. "Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." In a certain sense, we are already living in the end times. We already encounter great tribulation. We all find it easy to get distracted or discouraged in the grind of daily life. Today's Gospel reminds us that vigilance for God's presence is needed now. Infant Baptism: Registered members of the parish are welcome to arrange for their baby s baptism by signing up for the necessary preparation program for parents. 4 What s Happening Illness & Preparation for the Mass While Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, a serious reason may cause you to miss. Being sick is a serious reason for being excused from the obligation to attend Mass. If you have the flu or some other serious and/or contagious illness, please stay home. (Another common serious reason is severe weather.) If you feel you have a cold or if you have a compromised immune system, please don t shake hands with others during the sign of peace. You may smile and say, The peace of the Lord be with you. Our parish Advent gathering song will summon us to Taize Prayer on Monday, December 10 at 7:00PM. As always, our time together will be a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds, refresh our spirits and offer a welcome respite from the busy-ness of these days of preparation for Christmas. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God s voice. FISH FRY Our Lady of the Assumption (2222 Shopiere Road in Beloit) will have a Fish Fry this Friday, December 7. Serving takes place from 5:00-7:00 PM in Assumption Hall. All you can eat baked and fried Cod, baked potatoes, fries, cole slaw, applesauce, bread and beverage. Adults: $11.00; Children 6-12: $5.00; 5 & under FREE. Carry outs available. Desserts & soda offered at an additional charge. Parish Outing to Rotary Botanical Gardens Join us next weekend on Saturday, December 8th at the Rotary Botanical Gardens for their beautiful holiday light show. Enjoy strolling through the wonderland of lights with your St. Mary friends. We ll meet at Rotary Gardens (1455 Palmer Drive in Janesville) right after the 4:30 PM Mass. The cost is $5 per person and you ll pay at the door. A free shuttle is running that evening from Dawson Field (920 Beloit Avenue in Janesville), to make parking easier. A variety of goodies will be available for purchase; hot dogs, hot pretzels, cookies, hot chocolate and more. Come together to celebrate the season! The Lord is coming, always coming. We visit family and friends, bake cookies, decorate our trees, and shop for gifts until we re ready to drop. Join in the Song!!! Join our parish for BEST ADVENT EVER, a free program from Dynamic Catholic that will help you slow down and focus on what matters most during the busy holiday season. Removal can be at any time, but all ornaments will need to be removed by the end of the Christmas season, January 13th, High School Youth Group Saturday Dec 15, 6:30-9:00 Meet at the Nativity House for Dinner and prayer, and then we will move to the gym for Dodgeball/Basketball!! AND Saturday Dec 22, 5:30-7:30 Serve dinner to the homeless men at the GIFTS Men's shelter. This counts as service hours if you need them for school...also service hours for Heaven as we could all use those!!!
