2 News & Notes School News From the desk of Father Rob. St. Mary School One of the joys of being a priest is being a part of joyous events in the lives of people. This week, I will be flying south to officiate at the wedding of my sister. It will be a big family event with relatives coming from near and far. So, for this week and into next week, there will be no daily Mass. This coming weekend, please welcome one of our own priests Fr. Sudahakar Devarapu. He and a number of priests from India have come over to serve our Diocese for a period of time. Fr. Devarapu is speaking on behalf of the Propogation of the Faith. He will be speaking of the Church s missionary activity in India. Father s presence will remind us of the overall purpose of the Church to go to all the nations and baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Please welcome Father Devarapu to our parish. On Thursday, October 5, St. Mary s school hosted a showcase for the technologies utilized at the school for this year. The event was a great success with guests leaving with a deeper understanding of how our technology is utilized. Thank you to all the parishioners who make our technology possible! All the while, the school has been busy with field trips, dynamic learning, after school clubs, and fun. We are using the month of October to better outline the 4 goals St. Mary s school is working on. Last week we previewed our efforts to enhance communication. This week we are focusing on technology. Have a blessed week! Use of Technology Goal: All students at St. Mary s have a chromebook or an ipad, but most importantly is that all teachers have strong pedagogical skills to use these technologies in a way that enhances individual learning. Recently, the staff has looked at a computer adaptive assessment from each student to develop learning plans that incorporate Google Classroom, Quizlet, Class Dojo and many other learning applications. Perhaps most significantly was money provided from our home and school committee to purchase IXL an individualized, computer adaptive, interactive software that provides foundational skills for students in a fun and easy way. I encourage any and all Parishioners to come view the technologies over at the school. This weekend we celebrate Catholic Charities Sunday. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Madison, is entrusted with a mission on behalf of the Church, to act with unselfish love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ. We become the hands of Christ caring for the poor and vulnerable. Next weekend, October 21-22nd, the International Combined Collection will be conducted in our parish. Sacraments Anointing of the Sick: Scripture Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son? Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast" ' " - Mt 22:2, 4bc ************************************************************** "He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come." Why? What made the king's invitation so distasteful to these guests? According to the parable, either the guests were too busy with their farms and their businesses, or else they were downright hostile to the entire idea: they "laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them." What could possibly explain this resistance? Perhaps we have a clue in the puzzling conclusion of today's Gospel. One of the second-string guests pulled in from the streets came to the feast "not dressed in a wedding garment." The man knew he was guilty, hence his silence. And the king's punishment suggests that the fellow ought to have known better. This "wedding garment" calls to mind the preparation of our souls necessary to join in the great "wedding feast of the Lamb" (Rv 19:9), that is, heaven. This man was apparently just too lazy to get ready. He presumed that having received an invitation to the banquet was enough, that nothing was required of him. Not so. He should have demonstrated his gratitude by dressing appropriately. And what of the first-string guests? Some were too busy to bother coming; others were furious that they had been invited at all. Now, where do we fit in? Are we more concerned with worldly work than with spiritual growth? Are we offended by the very suggestion that we might need to "dress up" our souls? Or are we the disinterested Christian, willing to feast but too lazy to foster his faith? Jesus gave his life to open the gates of heaven for us. Let's show our gratitude by preparing radiant, beautiful souls worthy of the heavenly wedding feast. 4 What s Happening Madison Diocesan Cemeteries 2017 Fall Clean Up Notice The Madison Diocesan Cemeteries (Resurrection- Madison, Mount Olivet- Janesville, Mount Thabor and Calvary- Beloit) are getting ready to begin our annual fall clean up. All grave and crypt decorations that families wish to retain should be removed by October 14th The cemetery staff will remove and dispose of remaining decorations. Bronze vases will be turned down and are to remain until April 16, Winter decorations may be placed on graves and crypts beginning November 16, Flags may be placed on graves for Veteran s Day, November 10, Year round flags should be in a proper flag holder. Check with the appropriate office for assistance in acquiring the approved VA flag holders. We invite you to come and join us for this half hour of prayer. Centering Prayer is silent prayer which facilitates the development of contemplative prayer by preparing our body, mind and spirit to cooperate with this gift. It is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; it simply puts other kinds of prayer into a new and fuller perspective. During this time of prayer, we consent to God s Presence and Action within. 5 What s Happening Traveling Chalice As you all know, we have a thriving Traveling Chalice program here at Nativity of Mary and it is entirely due to all of our parishioners and their dedication to praying for vocations. Let s all continue to keep each day filled with those prayers!! We have also seen our program expand to include our school and RE students learning about their own vocation in life, and exactly what that means, as well as our homebound parishioners who truly appreciate being a part of parish life. All that said, to keep the program thriving, vocations growing, and our students vocation program expanding, all takes time and effort. So, to continue with all those precious goals, we are seeking an assistant who would be willing to help with phone calls and perhaps delivering the Chalice occasionally to a homebound host.
