2 News & Notes From the desk of Father Rob. First Communion: This weekend our 2 nd graders will be receiving the Lord for the first time in the Eucharist. It is a special time for them and for their families. This is not just a rite of passage. Pope St. Pius X thought that the sacrament was so important that the Lord should be received at an earlier age. He wanted young children to receive the special graces of this sacrament, and he wanted kids to know Him as the saintly Pope obviously knew Him. At the beginning of the 20 th century, the practice of young children at the age of 7 or older receiving Communion began. For many years up to this weekend, the practice has been to receive First Eucharist during a child s second grade year. A big thank you goes to the 2 nd grade catechists in our Catholic school and in the RE program who helped prepare our kids. Thanks also goes to Mrs. Hookham, who has spent many hours in preparing the kids and their parents in receiving the faith concerning the Eucharist. Finally, thank you to the parents for their support and desire to share the gift of Jesus Himself with their children. Priests For Our Future Update: Last week, I received a letter from the Diocese of Madison concerning the Priests For Our Future campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to raise funds to educate our men preparing for the priesthood. Our parish was assigned the goal of $555,000. I am happy to report that our parish has met that goal. The parish s total amount pledged was $749,470. Because people are continuing to redeem their pledges, the parish is now eligible to receive rebates. Any monies received over the goal to 125% of the goal is split 50% to the parish and 50% to the seminarian fund. Monies that come in when our parish goes over 125% of the goal is split 80% to the parish and 20% to the fund. Our first rebate check was received in the amount of over $900. This is good news, and hopefully people can continue to redeem their pledges so that the rebates can continue. Thank you again to all who were generous with the Priests For Our Future campaign! Have a blessed week! School News St. Mary School Our school year has reached May! Hard to believe! But there are many praises of Thanks be to God that we finally have weather to reflect our season of new life. This past week St. Mary students completed their 3 rd round of STAR 360 testing. These 20 minute tests in math and reading are given three times a year and focus on student s growth throughout the year. The results of the test then provide specific information to drive instruction and personalize our learning process so each child gets what they truly need. As expected, our scores were wonderful! Our 8 th graders are preparing to head off to Washington D.C. on Monday and our elementary students are finalizing their spring sing shows, which will be th and 9 th. On May 4 th we hosted a rec night for the middle school kids and were happy to provide a fun atmosphere for many of Janesville s middle school students. Finally, thank you to everyone who purchased flowers from our flower sale. Pickup will start noon on Friday 5/11. This I command you: love one another." - Jn 15:16-17 ************************************************************** "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship-new or old-becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their flaws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread. Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine Nativity of Mary parish is once again offering a pilgrimage opportunity. This year, our pilgrims will travel to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine near Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to Juan Diego, a poor peasant in Mexico, in 1531 and she is the patroness of Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine is the inspiration of Bishop Raymond Burke and this year they celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine church. The pilgrimage will take place on Thursday, June 28 and leave from the Nativity of Mary church parking lot. Cost of the pilgrimage will be $45, which includes bus transportation and lunch. More details on lunch and travel times will be forthcoming. Please join is for an amazing and prayerful day visiting Our Lady at her shrine. A potluck dinner will be served and you are asked to bring a dish to share, along with your own table service. Jessica Michna, First Impressions, will give a portrayal of first lady, Dolley Madison, The Lady Who Saved Washington. Jessica is widely known for her riveting portrayals of First Ladies and other historic women. Her performances are compelling and emotionally enthralling. This is our last meeting before the summer break so come enjoy yourself with good food and an excellent program. Blood pressure screenings will be available from 11:30 am to 12 noon.
