2 News & Notes School News From the desk of Father Rob. St. Mary School Stewardship of Time: This past weekend (the Epiphany) I mentioned the giving of self. The wise men gave of themselves in terms of their time (travelling the great distance) and treasure (the giving of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh). When they travelled home by another route, they were changed in the heart as well. Their encounter with Jesus changed them and filled them with joy. Danny Thomas sacrificial giving of treasure also changed his life when God answered his prayer for money to pay for his family s hospital bill. Mr. Thomas would go on to found the St. Jude Children s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The hospital mostly runs on charitable donations and actively makes its goals to provide medical treatment for children with little to no cost to families. Giving does change lives. After a well-deserved Christmas vacation, students and faculty returned to school January 3rd. The past two weeks have been an opportunity to get back into the swing of things and remind ourselves of the goals we have been working on all year: academic excellence, enhanced communication, growing our use of technology, and growing student faith and character. Over break, the Quo Vadis Vocations Club recognizes outstanding 7th and 8th graders from Catholic schools and Faith Formation programs in our area. These students particularly stand out by the regular practice of their faith and they have demonstrated a commitment to service to their parish. At an event that included Mass and a luncheon program held this year at St. William, on December 27, 2017, the student recognized from Nativity of St. Mary was Bryn McBride. Bryn demonstrated a commitment to her faith and our parish. Congratulations to Bryn! We are in need of some stewardship of time. We are in need of volunteers to help do little cleaning chores in the church. Parishioners are needed to clean the glass on the entry doors of our church either on a Thursday or Friday of each week. Someone is needed to vacuum the church aisles on Fridays. Once in a while, persons are needed to help dust places in church such as the tops of registers, window sills, and the area around our Virgin Mary shrine. These are small tasks, and all that is required is time and a generous heart. If you can do any of these things, please contact our maintenance man, Dan Kessler, at dkessler@nativitymary.org or call the Parish Office at Little gifts of time go a long way. Thanks to all who filled out a school survey during Masses this weekend, we appreciate your feedback! If you did not get a chance to fill one out, please contact Matt Parish (principal@nativitymary.org) for a chance to complete one. Have a blessed week! Upcoming Events: 1/17: Student led Mass (8:15) all are welcome 1/19: No school professional development for teachers 1/23: Strings Recital (Church hall at 6:15) 1/26: St. Mary s Tiny Tots (Mommy and Me class 9am) 1/26: Rec night (5th 8th graders) from 7-9pm Please note: AT&T will be starting to place underground facilities in preparation of the Milwaukee St bridge reconstruction. Starting January 10, 2018 AT&T will be working on Parker Place to place a manhole on Parker Place. Access to Milwaukee St via Parker Place will still be open. This is the first of multiple stages, weekly updates will be given to the City of Janesville and published on their website at I will continue to provide updates via the bulletin. 3 Focus on Faith Please Pray For Our Parishioners: Barbara Allen, Bill, Bill Bever, Noah Cotter, Jeanette Durant, Linda Fredell, LeeAnn Gilligan, Gerri, Jackie H., Geraldine Hilt, Alice Jensen, Robert McCann, Cory Musil, Brenda Porter, Max Rammer, Joel Rivera, Madelynn Schieve, Colleen Schroeder, Kelly Dooley Trewartha, Peter Weirich, Lola Williams, Avalon Widner, Lucille Willegal Sacraments Anointing of the Sick: Traveling Chalice This week the Traveling Chalice will be hosted by our Religious Education students. Any questions regarding our Traveling Chalice program may be directed to: Colleen at OR Scripture Second Sunday in Ordinary Time John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. - Jn 1:35-37 ************************************************************** "He first found his own brother Simon and told him, 'We have found the Messiah.'" After spending the day in the company of Christ, Andrew took action. He shared the good news! Instead of keeping his newfound friendship with Jesus all to himself, Andrew invited his brother into the fold. Andrew found Simon and "brought him to Jesus." This was no small matter because Simon would become Peter, the first pope! How important it is to bring others along with us to meet Christ! Yet, how often do we reach out with the kind of confidence that Andrew had? Are we ready and willing to share our faith with our family and friends? Do we consider our relationship with Jesus a gift to be shared, or a fact to be safely hidden away in our personal prayer corner? Part of our call as Christians is to evangelize others, to share with them the good news of salvation. Loving Jesus and following his moral commands is essential, of course, but it is not the end of the story. The Gospel message is meant for all people, and we are meant to be its messengers. Sometimes this requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It may mean speaking up when we'd rather be silent. It may mean inviting someone to Mass when they might say no. But it might also mean a conversion for someone we care about. It might mean a new minister for the Church. Ultimately, it might mean another saint in heaven. None of that is up to us, however. What we can control is only whether we share our faith joyfully and extend the invitation to others to experience the peace that comes from knowing Christ. Infant Baptism: Registered members of the parish are welcome to arrange for their baby s baptism by signing up for the necessary preparation program for parents. RCIA Please call anytime if you would like to discuss Catholicism and see how joining the Church may offer you a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Catholic Women s Club Contact Jan Bier at for more information. Knights of Columbus Meetings held 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm. Contact Greg Kraft at for more information. Bulletin Deadline Fridays at 12:00 noon. Please contact the Rectory at Readings for Sunday, January 14, 2018 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19 / 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, / Jn 1:35-42 Readings for Next Sunday, January 21, 2018 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Jon 3:1-5, 10 / 1 Cor 7:29-31 / Mk 1:14-20 Would You Like A Pastoral Visit? REMINDER: If you, a family member or someone you know is confined or hospitalized and would benefit from a pastoral visit, please contact your parish office and let them know. Staff does not always know of hospital admissions for a variety of reasons and often has no way of knowing of other situations in which a parish contact would be beneficial.

4 What s Happening Family Night with Matt Baird Matt Baird, lead vocalist for the rock band "Spoken" will be performing at St. Patrick Parish School on Friday evening, January 19 at 7pm. Matt is a Christian artist who will be performing his acoustical arrangements and sharing his love for the Christian faith. Join us for a prayerful and powerful evening. Bring your family and friends. This evening is open to the public (suggested donation $5 per person.) Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery. It is estimated that 21 million people are held in bondage today. Some are forced into labor. Others are sold for sex. None are able to leave their situation. Victims are held against their will through force (violence, rape and confinement), fraud (false promises of employment, wages, work), or coercion (threats of physical harm to the victim or a loved one). The tendency is to think that it doesn t happen here. The sad truth is that Wisconsin is one of the worst states in the nation for perpetuating human trafficking. Trafficking in Wisconsin can include: Sex trafficking of immigrants and U. S. citizens Domestic minor sex trafficking of teens and runaways Forced labor in agriculture, restaurants, and tourism House slavery (domestic servitude) Learn more about human trafficking: The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children - missingkids.com Wisconsin Department of Justice - doj.state.wi.us/ocvs/human-trafficking USCCB Program - usccb.org/about/anti-trafficking-program Racine Coalition Against Human Trafficking - racinecoalition.org Polarisproject.org / Sharedhope.org / 5-stones.org / Ecpatusa.org Information for parents about Social Media Apps: Report suspicious activity or a child in danger: Non-emergency Janesville Police Line (608) Human Trafficking Hotline 1 (800) "Each one of them is Jesus in disguise." -Saint Teresa of Calcutta That Man Is You is a multimedia program that helps men in their faith journey by studying the teachings of the faith and discussing how men can fulfill their vital roles as fathers, husbands, sons and disciples of Christ. Meetings are held weekly Wednesday mornings and include breakfast and fellowship with other men. This year TMIY is using the Catholicism series as its study program. I think of the adoption of children for the extraction of their organs, women deceived and obliged to prostitute themselves, of workers exploited and denied rights or a voice and so on. And this is human trafficking. - Pope Francis

5 What s Happening Resolution for the New Year Jesus was born into a harsh world, where Herod was doing the unthinkable: killing babies. Is there any doubt that our world today needs Jesus to come and dwell among us? As a new year begins, let us resolve to be a more effective and dedicated instrument of Jesus. Let us do more to promote love and peace. Let us do more to help moms turn the unplanned into a loving plan that embraces innocent life. Let us do more to change our culture of death.
