2 News & Notes School News From the desk of Father Rob. St. Mary School Surveys Next Weekend: Many of you may have read the state of the school address that was published in our February 5 th bulletin. Our principal, Mr. Castrogiovanni, shared with the parish during Mass on the weekend of January 29th how the school is doing academically, financially, and spiritually. Toward the end of his address, he mentioned future challenges that we need to address. One of those areas is lower enrollment. In the last 15 years, the enrollment for our parish school has decreased from 242 students to 134. However, this is also true throughout Janesville. The total enrollment of the Catholic schools in the city has decreased from 821 students in 2000 to 594 students in As you can see, we all have a serious challenge that is coming in the future. Next weekend, we will want your input. During Mass next weekend, all the parishes in Janesville will conduct an in-pew survey to ask for your input. School parents will also receive a survey to fill out outside of Mass. This is a tool to help us measure what your thoughts are and how we should proceed for future planning. Our annual Salad Luncheon will be held Friday March 10 th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The cost of the luncheon is $ Children 10 and under are $5.00. Take out is available for $8.00. This is a great event that all are welcome to attend. SCRIP REMINDER SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers.. grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more! Stewardship Thought: The dictionary defines time as a period during which something exists or can be accomplished. We live in twenty four hour increments. We can fall into the attitude of self-service, rather than other service, including our service to our parish. Money Counts for Week YTD I am grateful for all those who gave of their time toward the GIFTS men shelter. There was much food to prepare, food to deliver, tables to set up, meals to serve, and homeless men to speak with. Little ways of spending time goes a long way, and the comments I receive from the homeless men about our parish s hospitality confirms this. Your giving does bring Christ s presence. Budgeted Variance 9, $432, , , , , Diocese of Madison Annual Catholic Appeal Begins.. Please Make a Generous Pledge This week, parishioners throughout the Diocese will receive a mailing from Bishop Morlino. The Bishop is asking for a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal to support the ministries of the Diocese of Madison. Have a blessed week! Prayer of the Faithful May we come together in our work of enabling those throughout our diocese to know, to love, and toserve the Lord through generously giving to this year s Annual Catholic Appeal, and may we all join together and proclaim, As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father." - Mt 5:43-45a ************************************************************** "Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow." Today Jesus continues the powerful teaching of his Sermon on the Mount. Typical of this famous sermon, here he urges us to see things in a new way, specifically regarding situations and people who bother us. First, he tells us not to seek revenge. Instead, we are to demonstrate incredible generosity. Then, he instructs us to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." These instructions don't come naturally to most of us. We are much more inclined to want to get even with those who cause us to suffer, and to wish ill for those who have hurt us. But Jesus proposes another way. In truth, what good does it do to seek revenge or foster hate? It only continues the cycle of evil. Jesus encourages behavior that will stop the cycle short. He gives us a model that-- although it may not change the heart of our "enemies"--will nonetheless change OUR hearts for the better. When pressed into service for one mile, if we voluntarily go two, then WE are the ones whose attitude and experience is certain to change. Instead of spending the length of that one mile cursing and complaining, we spend the length of two enjoying a surprising kind of freedom: "I chose to do this," instead of "I am being forced to do this." When we practice the generosity of giving more than we are asked, and the charity of praying for those who persecute us, we will find ourselves in a position to transcend the trouble. It sets us free to not be mastered by the evil around us. Thus, we are able to help end the cycle of evil and begin a new cycle of love and peace. 4 What s Happening E.C.H.O. Community Meal Every month, E.C.H.O. sponsors a hot meal for anyone in need in our community. St. John Lutheran Church in Janesville always hosts the meal, but many local churches take a turn in providing and serving the meal. Nativity of Mary will serve the E.C.H.O. Community Meal on Saturday, February 25th at 12:00 noon. Please consider spending a few hours volunteering your time. A sign-up sheet for volunteers and for donations of milk will be available in our church vestibule this weekend, or call Sister Ruth at the parish office (608) , extension 18. Thank you for your participation in this worthwhile effort! Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support Janesville Crop Walk. Come in to the Chipotle at 3515 Milton Avenue Suite 105 in Janesville on Saturday, February 18th between 4:30 & 8:30 PM. Tell the cashier you re supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to Janesville Crop Walk. Catholic Women s Club Scholarship The Janesville Catholic Women s Club is offering four scholarships for high school seniors who are active members at one of the four Catholic parishes in Janesville. One scholarship will be offered at each parish. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a relative or friend who is a member of the club. Selection will be based on active involvement in the Catholic Church, academic standing, and participation in extracurricular activities in the school and community. Funds are raised at the club s Dollars for Scholars Card Party held twice a year. Applications are available at the Parker and Craig guidance offices and are due by April 1, For further information, or if you are home schooled, call Beth at Congratulations to the winners of the Free Throw contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and held at St. Mary's on February 2nd. Winners included Alex Currie, Sophia Garcia, Jaxon White, Addison Kessler, Kyle Chrostowski, Ava Spies, Luke Minard, Jocelyn Rammer, Austin Buchner, Bryn McBride and Reagan Godek. These winners advanced to a contest at St. Patrick's on February 11th where Sophia, Addison, Jocelyn, Bryn, Alex, Kyle and Luke won the district competition and will progress now to the Diocesan competition to be held in Sauk City on March 11th. Life is an echo what you send out, you get back! St. William Parish is seeking a Director of Religious Education (DRE). This full time position includes a heavy emphasis on Sacramental preparation, planning, curriculum development and administration of policy. Requirements for the position include a Bachelor's degree or higher in Theology, Religious Education or related field in addition to a strong personal faith and commitment to the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church. Administrative, organizational, communication, an ability to supervise staff and volunteers, public speaking and computer skills are all essential to success in this position, as is creativity and innovation. Salary and benefits are negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Cemetery Grounds crews completely clean the cemetery twice a year spring and fall. During the cleanings, the crews remove and discard all artificial decorations from the previous decorating period. Families should remove decorations they wish to save for reuse by March 14, 2017, that is, before the cleaning period begins. New decorations are allowed only after cleaning is completed, beginning April 16th.
