2 News & Notes News & Notes From the desk of Father Rob. St. Mary School Saints Corner: Reading past accounts of the saints in this column, a question may come up. Are all the saints just priests, bishops, and religious? The answer is a resounding no. There are many saints. For all the saints that have been publicly declared by the Church, there are thousands more that God alone knows. There have been many saints who have been single or have been married. This coming Friday the 16th, the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Margaret of Scotland. Margaret was born in 1045 in Hungary. Her parents were an exiled Scottish nobleman and a Hungarian princess. The environment of the Hungarian court was very religious, which aided greatly in the development of Margaret s faith and piety. Her family would later return to Scotland, where eventually she married its king, Malcolm. Together they had eight children. Margaret passed on the faith to her children. Although royalty, this queen practiced self-denial and was very generous to the poor in terms of money and service to them. Margaret would wash the feet of poor people in imitation of Jesus, and this example she set influenced her husband to convert to Catholicism. They sincerely loved each other. Margaret died only three days after the deaths of her husband and eldest son, both who died in battle. Margaret s example shows that although she was a secular ruler, it was the Lord who was first in her life. She sanctified her family, infused the faith in the monarchy s dealings, and introduced many reforms to the Church in Scotland. Her life reminds us that our call to holiness is not a private affair. It is a call to praise God in all the aspects of our life. School News: With the excitement of Halloween and All Saints Day behind us, the school turns to a spirit of Thanksgiving and finalizing projects before the Trimester ends. To that end, November is a very busy month for the school. Last Friday the 5th -8th graders participated in adoration with the Parish, something they have been preparing with Fr. Rob for a while. We are also looking forward to the Parish-sponsored family night happening at the school as well as a Parent s night near the end of the month focused on Digital Kids and Social Media. Upcoming Events: 11/14: Student-led mass (8:15) 11/14: Scoopie Night at Culvers 11/15: Home Volleyball vs SJV 11/17: Parish-sponsored Movie Night (following 4:30 Mass) 11/20: End of Trimester 11/21-11/25: Thanksgiving Break First Reconciliation: This coming Wednesday, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with the 2nd graders. They will come to the Lord Jesus for the first time to not only confess their sins, but to also receive the healing grace of Jesus to transform them and help each of them become like Christ. I know that the young ones have been studying hard and preparing much with their teachers and parents. Many thanks to our Director of Religious Education, Kathy Hookham, for her leadership and dedication to prepare our young people for the sacrament. Also, a big thank you to the 2nd grade teachers, Rebecca Calvagna and Deb Hahn for their organization and their time they have given toward the preparation of our children. Finally, I want to recognize our parents and guardians of the 2nd graders. They have been walking with them on their pilgrimage of faith, and a role that is the most important of all, since parents are the primary educators in the faith. Thank you to all who have prepared the students to come closer to the Lord. Money Matters Finally, I want to thank all those who have prepared our now confirmed students. They received the gift of the Holy Spirit last weekend at St. John Vianney. Many thanks to Kathy Hookham, Jan Bier, Luke Seibert, their sponsors, all their catechists and teachers who have helped them along the way, and finally their parents. May the Lord change their hearts and open their minds to the love and the grace of Jesus that they may desire only Him, the One who lives forever. Have a blessed week! Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." - Mk 12:41c, ************************************************************** In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet Samuel not to observe as men see but as God sees. He tells him to "look to the heart." This is the movement of this Sunday's Gospel reading. "Beware the scribes," Jesus advises. He points out their public greetings and "seats of honor," which stands in sharp contrast to their private greed. For the Jewish people of Jesus' day, honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a high profile back then as it still does today. After his warning, Jesus turns his disciples' attention elsewhere: a poor widow. "She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had." While the scribes donated large sums to the temple, they did so "from their surplus wealth." This woman -- in her faith and devotion -- offers "her whole livelihood." Jesus invited his disciples to see with God's eyes, to recognize a holy life in people the world overlooks. Here -- in the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized -- God waits hidden. Today's Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their self-righteousness because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The point isn't to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their hearts as well, and those assessments are firmly his responsibility. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically honored to the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the poverty of the modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith because we forget to look for it? This Sunday, consider the widows in your own life. Who can you see with God's eyes? Nativity of Mary Parish Picture Directory Throughout the month of November we remember those who have gone before us, especially those from our own parish who have passed within the last year. For participating, each family receives a complimentary 8x10 photograph and a free directory. Dates/Times: November and Mon 2-8 pm Tues/Fri 1-8 pm and Sat 9 am-4 pm In the month of November we will place the Book of the Dead in the church. All parishioners are invited to write the names of those who have died in this book and we will include them in our prayers. The Memorial Service to honor all Parishioners of Nativity of Mary who have died during the past year will be on Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 pm in the Church. Please register at or call the parish office at Everyone is welcome to join us for this event. Parishioners are welcome to bring photos of loved ones to be placed by the altar. Refreshments will be served following the service. The ADULT CATHOLIC SPIRIT CLUB will meet at noon, Wednesday 14 November 2018, at St. John Vianney s Marian Hall. A potluck dinner will be served and you are asked to bring a dish to share, along with your own table service. Michael Rehberg of Black Point Estate will tell us about Beer Barons on Geneva Lake & Their Milwaukee Neighbors. Learn the difference between ale and lager beers, the basics of brewing beer in the 19th century, and how the brewers responded to prohibition. Also, November is the month we collect goods for the House of Mercy. 5 What s Happening Prayer for Veterans Taize Prayer Good and gracious God, you do not condone war. Help us to understand the cause of war and work toward alleviating it from the face of the earth you created. The shortened days and early evenings of November invite us to seek light and warmth and open our hearts to reflection. Our second-monday-of-the-month Taize Prayer experience will be on Monday, November 12 at 7:00 PM. As always, our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and refresh our spirits. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God s voice in your heart. We ask you to bless the veterans of our country, but also to bless the veterans of our enemies too. War is the ultimate failure on our part to see the needs of our neighbor. Let us remember that our neighbor is our brother. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our brother and Savior. Amen. At the Hour of Our Death November is the month in which we offer fervent prayers for the dead. It is also a time to consider our own mortality. This informational evening is for those who wish to learn more about Catholic funerals and related rituals and who may even wish to consider a plan for their own funeral. As a gentle reminder; it is important that you prepare your reading carefully, so that you are not simply reading, but actually proclaiming the text. Being prayerful with the reading and living with it for several days in advance can help to familiarize you with the reading and make it your own.
