2 MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE MASS INTENTIONS A Word to the Wise If you were able to be granted a wish, what would it be? I am sure that most of us have pondered the possibility at one time or another (at least in passing). We could ask for all kinds of things, both selfish (I want to be rich) and unselfish (good health for my family). We could ask for something huge like world peace! What about wisdom? This probably wouldn t be at the top of my list, but we find a couple examples of exactly that in our liturgy today! In the first verse of the responsorial psalm, the psalmist asks for God to teach us to number our days correctly so that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the first reading today, the author prayed and pleaded for prudence and wisdom even above all the gold and silver in the world! Why is wisdom so valued in our readings? Wisdom brings together our experience, knowledge, and good judgment for the betterment, not just of ourselves, but of everyone. Wisdom reaches beyond our personal wishes so that we can live justly and rightly as we walk with Jesus and each other. Wisdom brings peace to our lives and to those around us, and even into the world. In a world that seems to thrive on conflict and unrest, asking God for wisdom may be just the thing we need to shine like the stars in the sky! Deacon Mike 10:00 am Mass 10:00 am J.A.M. 3 DID YOU KNOW Crafty Ladies are in need of gently used handbags and purses for the new Handbag Boutique at our Holiday s On Pine Street Bazaar. Please drop them off in our Parish Office by October 30. Our Parish Nursery As you may know, St. Bernard Parish was blessed with a renovated nursery 3 years ago thanks to all of your help. Today we are asking for your help again, this time in staffing our nursery with qualified volunteers. At present, we have 3 very dedicated individuals who give of their time. However, this isn t enough. If we aren t able to staff the nursery with more volunteers we won t be able to offer this ministry to our young families, guests and grandparents. Please pray on and consider giving your time to this beautiful ministry. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Kara Main in our Parish Office at Library N Lunch every Thursday in the Library. Bring your lunch and a friend. YOUNG ADULT/YOUTH Young Adult Ongoing: Brewing the Faith is a twice a month social meet-up for young adults (18-39). Feel free to join us for Mass, the social meet-up or both. 4 ADULT FORMATION FORMED Last weekend at all of the Masses we had a presentation on FORMED. Formed is a Catholic online site similar to Netflix, but with all Catholic materials and content. St. Bernard Parish Endowment has purchased a one-year subscription so all Parishioners may participate and enjoy this rich assembly of great Catholic content. To participate, one needs to have an entrance code/password. We are providing this for you. 5 Impact October Bring faith to life. Find life in faith 2018 Impact this month PRAY Pray this prayer throughout the coming month: Lord, may your Holy Spirit make your good will and call for my life clear and present amidst the noise and clutter of my modern life. Help me to see moments where I can practice putting you and your Gospel first. DISCERN What desires do you perceive in the depths of your heart? How might this desire lead you to follow Jesus more fully with your life? If you are weighed down by material things or concerns, invite God to free you from these burdens. ACT What one or two things will you do this month to respond to the Lord? Resolve to put your faith into action. One word changes everything Did you catch that? Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. (MK 10:17-30) Notice that Jesus includes persecutions in the many things those who follow him will be given. Jesus tells us that when we put life, gifts, and resources in perspective, and give to others as stewards, our lives will be filled with rich blessings we can only dare to imagine. But there is more. In giving up for the sake of the gospel, we will be drawn into Christ s very life. Jesus endured attempts to trap him, persecution, and ultimately crucifixion as a result of living his mission in the world. The path is sometimes rocky, but when we live as disciples, we are assured that we will experience the fullness of life in Christ, now and for eternity. Impact 2018
