2 News & Notes From the desk of Father Rob. School ended this past week: Last Thursday, June 7, was the final day of classes for our students. They will enjoy some summer fun until classes resume in late August. We pray that our students and their parents will find summer to be a time of refreshment. Summer is also a time for respite for our teachers and school staff. It will be well deserved time off, but also the summer will be an opportunity for continuing education. I want to take the opportunity to thank our principal, Matt Parish, teachers, and school staff, for all their hard work and dedication this past school year. Teaching is hard work, but it is always rewarding. If you ever see one of our school staff around, please extend to them our appreciation. Cross Catholic Outreach here: This coming Father s Day weekend, one of the priests from Cross Catholic Outreach will be celebrating all the Masses here next weekend. Cross Catholic has done much work and ministry with the poor in the Caribbean, South America, and other places in the world. His presence will again remind us of a truth from the feast of Corpus Christi Christ has given His body and blood for many. That sacrament empowers us to boldly proclaim the Gospel. Part of that Good News is to manifest Christ to the thirsty and the hungry, for when we served the Lord in that capacity, he Himself was loved. I am grateful for Cross Catholic s presence as I will be taking time to visit family. Please welcome Father Pascal Kumanda to our parish next weekend. Have a blessed week! School News St. Mary School The school year wrapped up for St. Mary s. Students and staff celebrated their end of year picnic last week, which was a wonderful event hosted by home and school. The day featured bouncy houses, Kona Ice, water balloon tosses, and the traditional tug-of-war. On Tuesday the students, including more than 10 new students, participated in a move-up day, where students get to spend an hour with their teacher for next year. The event brought optimism and excitement for the year to come. Thursday, the end of the year was officially closed with the final student-led mass. We as a school have a lot to be excited about in the school year. As your principal, I have felt incredible blessed to lead the school this past year. We have amazing teachers and workers in the building and so much to be proud of. St. Mary s remains an outstanding school in the city of Janesville and I cannot wait to see what next year brings. And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother." - Mk 3:33-35 ************************************************************** Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards. The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God." SCRIP FOR SUMMER SCRIP cards are available for purchase after Mass twice per month.. next up, the weekend of June 16th/17th. If you find you can t make your purchase after Mass, SCRIP can be picked up at the rectory Monday thru Thursday from 10 am-2 pm, generally. Please call that morning before making the trip to be sure someone will be available to assist you Thank you for supporting your parish and school! If you have a family member or close friend in the Armed Forces, we welcome you to submit their name, branch of military and place where they are stationed to the parish office and we ll add them to our list of honored military men and women to keep in our prayers. Prayer for our Soldiers Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect our soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. For information, call Greg Kraft PILGRIMS STILL NEEDED Nativity of Mary parish is once again offering a pilgrimage opportunity. We have many planning on making the pilgrimage, but still have available seats. Our deadline to sign up is quickly approaching. You must sign up by June 11 to be a part of this amazing day!! This year, our pilgrims will travel to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine near Lacrosse, Wi. Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to Juan Diego, a poor peasant in Mexico, in 1531 and she is the patroness of Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine is the inspiration of Bishop Raymond Burke and this year they celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine church. The pilgrimage will take place on Thursday, June 28 and leave from the Nativity of Mary church parking lot. Cost of the pilgrimage will be $45, which includes bus transportation and lunch. More details on lunch and travel times will be forthcoming. Please join is for an amazing and prayerful day visiting Our Lady at her shrine. SPIRITUS is seeking Catholic men, years of age, to join the SPIRITUS missionary team this August. SPIRITUS ignites the faith in thousands of young Catholics through retreats and parish youth ministry each year! Missionaries live in community and travel to parishes and schools throughout Wisconsin; they receive training, formation, spiritual direction, lodging, food, a monthly allowance, health insurance and a $2,000 stipend upon completion of the 9-month program. Taize Prayer does much the same thing throughout the year, inviting us once each month, to simply be in God s presence for about three-quarters of an hour. Once again, we will gather in a candle-lit place of peace, to open ourselves to the presence of the Holy Spirit, to sing simple and beautiful music, to hear God s Word in scripture and in silence, to listen for God s voice in our hearts.
