2 News & Notes News & Notes From the desk of Father Rob. St. Mary School Please welcome Fr. Falco to our parish. He is here this weekend to share the work the Servants of Mary do, particularly the missionary work in South Africa. There are envelopes at the edges of the pews. Please consider helping Father Falco and his order in serving the peoples of South Africa. Thank you. Back to School News: Holy Day of Obligation Approaching: This Wednesday is the solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Church has honored this aspect of Mary s life for thousands of years. Since she was sinless at the beginning of her life, it was fitting that the Blessed Mother was honored by God through the glorification of her body, which carried our Savior. Her glorification is our destiny - that our bodies will rise again on the last day. This coming Wednesday, August 15th, is to be treated as a Sunday. Mass times for the Assumption are posted for all the Janesville parishes. Please come and join us in worship. One day, we also hope to share in God s promise! We are so excited the school year is upon us! We are welcoming more than 10 new students into our K-8 school and are set to have the largest kindergarten class in more than 5 years! As this exciting time of year approaches we have a couple things to keep in mind: - 8/26: Back to School Barbecue - Meet after the 10:30 mass at the school to re-connect with old friends and meet new ones. Please note that school supplies are to be dropped off the following Monday. - 8/27: School Supply Drop-off - New this year, is our Monday school supply drop off. We wanted to ensure families and students had the appropriate amount of time to talk to teachers and ask questions. Come by between 9-11, 1-3, or 5-7. Have a blessed week! - 8/28: First day of school (P4J through 8th) - 8/29: First day of school for 3k SCRIP REMINDER SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers.. grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more! 3 Focus on Faith Please Pray For Our Parishioners: Barbara Allen, Bill, Bill Bever, Valerie Boggs, Noah Cotter, Jeanette Durant, Linda Fredell, LeeAnn Gilligan, Gerri, Jackie H., Geraldine Hilt, Alice Jensen, Caroline McNally, Cory Musil, Max Rammer, Phyllis Rice, Madelynn Schieve, Colleen Schroeder, Ray Stuttgen, Kelly Dooley Trewartha, Peter Weirich, Lola Williams, Avalon Widner, Lucille Willegal Sacraments Anointing of the Sick: Traveling Chalice This week the Traveling Chalice will be hosted by Tricia Dooley. Any questions regarding our Traveling Chalice program may be directed to: Colleen at OR Scripture Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time "I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die." - Jn 6:48-50 ************************************************************** Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? how can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world." This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories? we are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever." Infant Baptism: Registered members of the parish are welcome to arrange for their baby s baptism by signing up for the necessary preparation program for parents. RCIA Please call anytime if you would like to discuss Catholicism and see how joining the Church may offer you a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. 4 What s Happening Taize Prayer Taize Prayer began in the little community of Taize, France during the 1940s following the destruction of World War II. A group of religious men sought to create an ecumenical form of prayer that would foster reconciliation and peace among all people. Today, Taize Prayer is celebrated throughout the world, bringing Christians of all traditions together to sing, to hear God s words in Scripture, and to listen in silence for God s voice in their hearts. In that spirit, we gather at St. Mary s as we have since February 1998, to offer this prayer. You are invited to experience Taize Prayer here on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. You will find it an opportunity to take a few moments from the busyness of your life and simply be in God s presence. Summer is passing quickly. Give yourself a midsummer gift of time to step back, take a deep breath, savor the moment, and reflect. Taize Prayer is an invitation to do all of that the second Monday of each month, year round. Our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and simply be in God s presence. Come and bask in the light of candles, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, and listen in silence for God to speak to your heart. Come to St. Mary s on Monday, August 13 at 7:00PM for a peaceful and enriching prayer experience. Server Training Fr. Rob will conduct a training session for all those called to be an altar server; adult and student. Saturday, August 18 th at 11:00 am in the church. The training session should only take about an hour. We are excited about the possibility of parent/child teams. Note: children should be entering the 5 th grade or older and have received their First Communion. Pope Francis has reminded us on many occasions to be of service to others. 4 Traveling Chalice -Sign up after any Mass this weekend to host our Traveling Chalice and pray for vocations! UNITE us to Jesus through prayer and sacrament, so that we may cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. Amen. -Pope Francis Fellowship Weekend August 18th/19th Gather in the Church Hall after Mass on Saturday and Sunday for refreshments. All are welcome!
