3 SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 BEFORE CREAM OF CRAB SOUP You may remember that I went away about three weeks ago to Baltimore for a conference on How to Preach Better conducted by the Dominican Fathers. Father Kevin Dillon and I enjoyed it a great deal and helpfully honed our skills. On the last night we went to Phillips Restaurant in the Inner Harbor I love their Cream of Crab Soup. As we were sitting at the table waiting to order, two young waiters came up to us and had an important question. They said that they had heard that Pope Francis had done away with belief in hell. They were wondering whether or not that was the case. Two things immediately caught my interest. For one thing I was quite surprised that two young guys in their twenties had any interest or worries about hell. For another I was happy to see that these two who were Protestants really cared about what the Pope said or did. After all, Protestants do not accept the authority of the Pope in matters of faith and morals. But these two, whatever their theology or belief, were more than a little interested in what the Holy Father had to say. As you can well imagine, I explained to them that neither the Pope nor anyone else could do away with hell because it is clearly and unequivocally taught by Jesus Christ and appears in the New Testament rather often. In Matthew 25 Jesus speaks of the condemnation of the wicked in terrifying terms: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." (Mt. 25:41) These people deserved hell because they had a serious lack of charity in their lives. They neglected the poor, sick and hungry among others. They ignored the precept of the Lord Jesus to love their neighbor. What a tragedy! Even the great St. Paul was worried about getting to heaven. He wrote to the Corinthians that he disciplined his body "lest having preached to others I myself become a castaway." (1 Cor 9:27) Few people have done more for Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church than St. Paul and yet he was still concerned about his salvation. I might venture that he was perhaps a little overly worried, but the point is he understood that there is the possibility of eternal punishment in the life to come. One of the most noted preachers of our times, Billy Graham, a non-catholic preached to millions upon millions and was very clear about the existence of hell. He had no doubts and spoke the truth clearly and for that he is to be commended. Surprisingly enough, Evangelicals (who disagree with Catholics on many points) are one with us in accepting the truth of hell taught by Jesus and proclaimed by His Church. They don't believe in the Seven Sacraments and the Dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption, but they are perfectly clear on hell.

4 Believe it or not, I do not spend a lot of time thinking about hell. I am a great believer in the Infinite Ocean of Mercy which is the Heart of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to do the same and have unlimited confidence and trust in Our Lord. The secret is to love Him with your whole being and treat others the way you would treat Him. If you do that, you don't have to worry too much about the other place. I give those two waiters at Phillips in Baltimore credit. They were concerned about eternal salvation. Would that a lot of others had the same interest and courage to ask a priest about hell. Oh yes! The Cream of Crab Soup there was beyond belief. I had two bowls. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. 12 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE September 11 th - The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace seeks to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will regardless of their religious faith in prayer for peace. While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of life, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world. To commemorate this tragedy with dignity and hope, the Supreme Council passed a resolution in 2004 to observe September 11 th as a day of prayer for peace. The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring to the world the Church s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred, said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice, he added. KNIGHTS PROVIDE DISASTER RELIEF During an audience with Pope Francis following his Angelus Address on August 28 th, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson informed the Holy Father that the Knights of Columbus were donating $ 50,000 to him to help provide relief for children impacted by the recent deadly earthquake northeast of Rome. The Knights of Columbus is pleased to answer the Holy Father s call and to assist those, especially children, who are suffering so much as a result of this devastating disaster in Italy, said Mr. Anderson. The Knights support for earthquake victims comes at the same time the organization has donated substantially in terms of funds and volunteers to the victims of the recent floods in Louisiana. 13 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION The U.S. Department of Education has issued guidelines explaining students' religious liberties. You can pray, read your Bible or other religious material, and talk about your faith at school. A 7-year-old boy at Desert Rose Elementary School in Palmdale, California, read an encouraging note and Bible verse that his mother had packed into his lunch bag to his friends at lunch time. Soon, many students were asking for copies of the notes which included short stories from the Bible. However, when one little girl said, "Teacher, this is the most beautiful story I've ever seen," the boy was reprimanded twice by his teacher in front of the whole class and told to stop talking about religion or sharing his mother's notes. He went home in tears. A letter to the district from Liberty Counsel said, "... it is clear that the actions of the districts staff, in prohibiting voluntary student religious expression during non-instructional time, then completely banning such student expression from school property entirely, and finally, calling the police to report the same, are simply unconstitutional." The district has ignored this letter. (washingtontimes.com, 6/3/16; lc.org, 6/1/16; wnd.com, 6/2/16) Your teachers can organize prayer groups with other teachers. Football Coach Joe Kennedy, fired from Bremerton School District, Washington, for saying a brief, personal prayer at the 50-yard line after games since 2008, has just filed a lawsuit. "When the school district fired Coach Kennedy for praying, they engaged in explicit religious discrimination, violating the First Amendment and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act," said First Liberty Senior Counsel. (firstliberty.org, 8/9/16) Learning these religious liberties will clarify to students, parents and teachers that schools are not God-free zones. Pray, Learn and Act to preserve religious liberty. Visit FREE FLU VACCINE ( Catholic Health Services in conjunction with St. Francis Hospital ) Free flu shots will be available 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 17th at St. Aloysius Parish Center, 592 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck, NY. Appointments are not needed.

There will be many choices that they will make during the next 4 years, let s help them to stay connected to their faith while they are making those choices! Let s help our young people keep a faith connection while they are in college. Many will be away from home and out on their own, what better way to help them stay grounded and give them a safe place to meet new friends than through their University s Newman Center. Newman Centers are Catholic ministry centers at non-catholic universities throughout the country. These Centers provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic student population. Through the Newman Connection, students are connected to their Campus Minister and invited to join Catholic Campus Ministry this becomes their faith community away from home! It s simple to make that connection the only information that is required is the student s first and last name and the name of the college or university they will be attending in September. Then send this information to Marianne Sheridan, Director for Youth Ministry at msheridan@drvc.org. This information will be forwarded to the proper Newman Center and your teen will be welcomed in the fall when they arrive at their school. Let s help our Young Church stay connected! DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE-The 28th Annual Mass for Deceased Children will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 12:30 PM in St. Agnes Cathedral. Refreshments will be served following the Mass in the Parish Center. All who have experienced this loss are welcomed. No registration is needed. For information please call Deacon Darrell Buono at (516) x200.
