3 SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 A PROBLEM AND AN OPPORTUNITY I was really surprised to learn a rather astonishing fact the other day. Dr. Mark Gray of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown tells us that Catholics are leaving the Church when they are very young even at 10 or before! He indicates that many young Catholics depart between 13 and 17. According to him, they are unlikely to return at least that is their idea in this stage of their life. This is not good for the future of the Church in the United States. When I was at the Dominican Preaching Conference in Baltimore, there was a fantastic speaker, Father Bill Byrne, who spoke about dealing with the unchurched. As he spoke, you could see that what he was saying resonated with all the priests. He was specifically speaking about getting parents involved in the religious education of their children and as a matter of fact in their own. He also said that dealing with those who approached the Church for marriage required a lot of kindness, tact and skill. His point was that most who come have only a sketchy idea of Catholic teaching. Speaking frankly, many priests feel that since the '70s there has been a real crisis in religious education. In recent years, especially with the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, that situation is improving at least from the educational point of view. There are, however, two very significant issues that are affecting the Church in the United States and the faith of our children. One is that the society or culture is in a downward spiral and is rapidly embracing more and more secular values and values that are directly opposed to the teaching of the Catholic Church. You only need to teach or talk to teens to find out how much they have been influenced by secular ideas. To be blunt, religion is in deep trouble and not only the Catholic religion. The other problem is that the majority of Catholic parents do not attend Mass and thus their children find Mass an experience that is far from common. This is not a matter of undue pessimism, but it is a question of the real world that our children are living in. I want to suggest some things that can be done by parents and grandparents. (Happily enough, there are many such concerned Catholics and you can do a lot.) Here goes: Create a religious atmosphere in the home. A catholic home should not only be Catholic in atmosphere, but it should show signs of Catholicism: crucifixes, statues, holy water. This need not be overdone, but these things should be present.

4 Have some time for family prayer. It need not be lengthy, but a part of the rosary would be ideal. A decade of the rosary, for example, would take about five minutes nothing to the time spent on video games and the smart phone! Reading even one verse of the Gospel at dinner would be great. Talk about the faith. Not too much, but on occasion. This helps impress on your children and grandchildren that the faith is important to you. You may not think so, but children and young people really listen even if the contrary seems to be the case. Whatever you do, never give up on the Gospel. It has a power all its own! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Kathleen Gattis, Joseph Fitzgerald, Rita Amendola, Virginia Fallon, Joyce French, Barney Rinaldi, Judy Eberso-Kostovick, Chris Lynch, Terence Simblitt, Ana Bubalo, Michael Vladich, Terry Laughlin, Anthony Rosario, Deacon Frank Love, Kimberly Kurz, Catherine Reardon, Bob Hesse, Margaret Cacioppo, Audrey Scott, Toti Conforti, Maryann O Brien, Cathy Fritze Annette De Stefano, Diane LaBianca, Joseph LaBianca, Rose Cascio, Ann Tartaglia, Rolanda Jhon, Ashley Hehir, Preciosa Punzal DECEASED: Mary Price, Ann Uttaro, Catherine Meyer, Edward Rienzie, Praxedes Flores, Helen MacFarlane and for all those who have died serving our country. 13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA After this weekend we will be busy, children at school, keeping the programs. I will start the course that I am publishing in the bulletin, a course so deep and rich. We will be exploring the life and wonder of those who have chosen to live as friends of Christ, announcing the kingdom of the Lord. As St. Theresa of Avila says Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours, yours are the eyes through which Christ s compassion is to look out to the earth, yours are the feet by which He is going to go about doing the good and the healing we all need! There we need to carry Jesus in our hearts to wherever He wants to go, and there are many places to which He may never go unless we take Him to them. None of us knows when the loveliest hour of our life is and we need to be with our Lord then and there. We need to recognize our dignity, of sharing God s own nature, so as not to damage it by sinning. Remember who is your head and whose body you are a member! You were brought into the light of the Kingdom of God by Jesus dying on the Cross. The story of Jesus is to be proclaimed and celebrated, some will hear and rejoiced, some will remain indifferent, some will became hostiles. We must proclaim the story of Jesus, even if it is not accepted, but it must be told! This week we have many new CDs which will interest you and pass on to others. The Three Stages of the Interior Life by Matthew Leonard. An easy and understanding talk that unveils a deep topic, helps us to progress toward union with God, that will aid you in your journey to become a saint! Is God on Your IPod? by Matt Smith, Is mainstream music not good for you? He discusses how we as Christians can judge between different types of music to determine whether or not they lead us closer to the Good, the True, and the Beautiful which is closer to God! Do not forget to register for the new course, it is going to be a very interesting course and we need to be there as a group to raise up the name of Jesus. I will see you on September 13th. Thank you. Pray for me as I pray for you. Toti Conforti CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Free to Speak" - What the U.S. Department of Education says about public school students' religious liberties: * You can organize prayer groups and religious clubs, and announce your meetings. Two years ago, Liz Loverde, a L.I., NY high school student, submitted an application requesting the school recognize the "Dare To Believe" after-school club she wanted to form using school facilities just as 30 other school clubs did. The stated purpose of "Dare To Believe" was: - "To strengthen one another as believers in Christ - To study God's Word, the Bible, and apply it in your life - To serve the community as the hands and feet of Jesus" But the school refused to recognize the club simply because of its religious nature. First Liberty Institute intervened on Liz's behalf, and school officials then complied with federal law and officially recognized "Dare To Believe." As students prepare to go back to school for the school year, they may think there is nothing they can do to make a positive change in the world and protect their freedom of religion. But as one Long Island girl proved, when one person dared to believe, that's enough. (firstliberty.org, 8/5/16) "We are free because of Christ and (kids) shouldn't waste an incredible gift." Liz Loverde, H.S. student Pray, Learn and Act to preserve religious liberty. Visit

14 Consoling The Heart Of Jesus Jesus teaches us that when two or more are gathered in his name, there He is in our midst. (Mt 18:20) Our Lord wants his followers to come together for fellowship and prayer and such coming together of Christians for prayer and deepening in the faith is a good and Holy thing. It pleases Jesus, makes Him spiritually present, and brings us into His abundant life. It is time to relearn the gift of presence. Rediscover the joy of group fellowship, and develop new friends in Christ. God gives especially great graces when two or more are gathered in His name. He becomes present in their midst and the Holy Spirit comes down with fire. This new study is to lead us to the burning love of the Sacred Heart, the program aims to help our hearts on fire with the love of God and neighbor and to inspire us to works of mercy. In this time of extraordinary graces it is easier than ever to grow in holiness and even to become saints. He will do it, gently, quickly and easily, if we only let Him. Register for this course, let's fall in love with the Lord! Toti Conforti We will meet every Tuesday from 10:00-11:30 AM or 7:30-9:00 PM in the Convent Community Room from September 13th- November 1st. Please bring your bible and please register so we know we have enough supplies. Please call Toti Conforti at (516) or toticon@aol.com

16 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE September 11 th - The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace seeks to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will regardless of their religious faith in prayer for peace. While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of life, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world. To commemorate this tragedy with dignity and hope, the Supreme Council passed a resolution in 2004 to observe September 11 th as a day of prayer for peace. The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring to the world the Church s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred, said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice, he added. KNIGHTS HONOR LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR At Its annual States Dinner the Knights of Columbus bestowed its highest honor, the Gaudium et Spes Award on the Little Sisters of the Poor. The sisters were recognized for their selfless charity and intrepid spirit. The Little Sisters of the Poor were chosen as the 12 th recipient of the prestigious award for their witness to the Gospel in caring for the elderly poor, and for standing up in recent years for religious liberty against the U.S. government mandate that would require them to violate their consciences by providing contraception and abortion-causing drugs in health plans for their employees. Accepting the award on behalf of the congregation was Mother Loraine Marie Maguire, mother provincial of the Baltimore Province. The inaugural Gaudium et Spes Award was given in 1992 to Mother Teresa of Calcutta; it includes a medal and a $ 100,000 honorarium. This was the first time that the award was bestowed upon a religious community rather than an individual. Singers with previous choral experience and basic music reading skills are encouraged to fill out an application form by visiting the choir website at This group of 100 singers leads the music for all the principal diocesan liturgies at the Cathedral, frequently appearing on Telecare as they sing for the Ordinations of Deacons, Priests, and Bishops, as well as Advent Lessons and Carols, the St. Agnes Awards, and other celebrations. The choir also performs concerts of sacred music, often with orchestra, including the Gounod St. Cecilia Mass, the Haydn Te Deum, and works by other classical and contemporary composers. The repertoire of the choir includes a wide variety of music from chant to contemporary compositions. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings (every other week) at St. Kilian Church in Farmingdale. Since many in the choir also belong to their parish choirs, the Diocesan Choir schedule is careful to avoid conflicts on Sunday mornings, and avoids important liturgical weeks like Christmas and Holy Week. In addition to Diocesan Liturgies, the choir has brought their joyful music to additional locations in Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, as well as St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York City. In 2010 the choir made their first European tour to Salzburg, Munich and Vienna, and most recently embarked on a Pilgrimage to England & Ireland celebrating their 25th anniversary season. This coming September, the choir will be accompanying many Diocesan pilgrims to the Basilica of National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C.
