3 February 19, 2017 TEEN DRINKING Quite recently (and we weren't on the subject) a woman friend of mine told me that her two teenage children had never attended a drinking party and they had no desire to anyway. That was so encouraging to me because we live in a very pro-drink culture where drinking is often a badge of acceptance and being cool. It's no surprise to me since teenage drinking mirrors so much the alcoholic activity of college students and a society that in so many instances is bent on anesthetizing itself from real life. Let's face it excessive drinking is an escape! St. Gregory the Great (died 604) was a pope who spoke very directly and pointedly about the responsibilities of pastors he pulled no punches. He indicated that bishops were not to be like dumb watchdogs who saw the wolf coming to destroy the flock and simply kept quiet. The same applies to ordinary pastors we have the responsibility to guard and protect the people entrusted to us to the extent that is possible. Taking St. Gregory's advice to heart, I would like to talk about the subject of teen drinking and the role of parents in safeguarding their children from this unfortunate and pervasive threat to their personal happiness. Even the US government is worried about this problem. Readers of this column may recall that in the past I have cited a government study that indicated 40% of teens had experimented with alcohol by the time they reached the 8th grade. Wow! Some will argue that teen drinking is just a phase kids go through and that you just live with it and it will take care of itself. That is a lie! They don't have to drink and they shouldn't. (I'm not talking about a very little wine at a family dinner but I am talking about drinking with friends and the endless beers and other beverages. Catholic teaching is that excessive drinking is sinful it is a form of gluttony and deliberate drunkenness is a serious sin, a grave offense against the law of God. This needs to be taught by parents through their clear instruction and example. Kids who come from parents who abuse alcohol habitually will often enough do the same themselves. Kids will respect parents who have clear and definite moral guidelines and will not permit their children to live like people who know nothing of Jesus Christ and the teaching of His Church. I so much admire the deep love that parents have for their children. One of the best things they can do is give their children a strong and Catholic moral background. We all know that many parents, in a mistaken attempt to be "friends" with their children, are willing to go along with things that are highly questionable. They do this because they feel pressured by what other parents think and do. Some of them are insecure in their own parenting skills and have a nagging fear that their

4 children will be unpopular if they are "too strict." Teen drinking has an unlimited potential for causing manifest evil and is often the road to alcoholism. I ask parents to have courage to be thoroughly Catholic and talk realistically with their teens about drinking. We believe in the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. These teachings do not change because of a society that has largely turned its back on God. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald MASS TO MEET BISHOP BARRES The parishioners of St. Aidan are invited to attend a Mass at St. Mary s Church, Manhasset to meet our new bishop, Bishop John Barres. 8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life." Psalm 119:50 Freedom of Faith vs. Doctor Assisted Suicide Laws: Vermont: Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys have filed suit in federal court against Vermont Board of Medical Practice, etc. on behalf of doctors who fear that state agencies are construing Vermont's assisted suicide law as requiring them, regardless of their conscience or oath to "do no harm", to counsel patients on doctor-prescribed death as an option. According to state agencies, only doctors may refer patients to others for assisted suicide counseling. However, these health care professionals contend it is unethical for them to counsel for, refer for, or in any way participate in suicide. "The government shouldn't be telling health care professionals that they must violate their medical ethics in order to practice medicine," said ADF Senior Counsel. "These doctors and health workers deeply believe that suffering patients need understanding and sound medical treatment, not encouragement to kill themselves. The state has no authority to order them to act contrary to that sincere and time-honored conviction." (adflegal.org, 7/21/16) California: The insurance company for terminally ill Stephanie Parker, wife and mother of four, denied her a different chemotherapy drug after California's End of Life Option Act was passed in She was told that while chemotherapy was denied, suicide pills were covered under her plan. "As soon as this law was passed... patients fighting for a longer life end up getting denied treatment, because this (suicide) will always be the cheapest option," she said. (washingtontimes.com, 10/20/16) Hippocratic Oath: "... I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgment, but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing. Neither will I administer poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course." It is almost impossible for humans to experience loss without feeling some kind of grief. Grief can be painful, confusing and overwhelming. To share with others who are experiencing what you are experiencing can be supportive and healing. A Bereavement Group for people whose loved one has died (parent, spouse, sibling, or friend) will be held in the Peter & Paul Room of the Finamore Parish Center by a trained Bereavement Facilitator. Tuesdays, 9:45 AM Thursday, 7:30 PM March 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th April 4th & 11th March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th & April 6th Please call the Parish Social Ministry Office at (516) x9410 to register. The only feelings that do not heal are the ones you hide. Henri Nouwen
