3 DECEMBER 18, 2016 WELCOME BISHOP BARRES Bishop John Barres was appointed by Pope Francis as the fifth bishop of Rockville Centre on December 9th. He will formally be installed as the Ordinary (bishop) on Tuesday, January 31st at 2:00 PM. The high point of that ceremony is when the new bishop is led by Cardinal Dolan and other bishops to the cathedra or bishop's chair. It will be a great and festive day and will mark a new point in the history of our rather young diocese which was only established in Until January 31st Bishop Murphy will be the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese. As we joyfully welcome our new shepherd we note that like Bishop Murphy he has advanced theological degrees. They both attended Ivy League Schools. Bishop Murphy went to Harvard, but left early to enter the seminary. Bishop Barres went to Princeton and was a fine basketball player. Both Bishop Murphy and Bishop Barres are linguists and can speak several languages besides English: French, Spanish and Italian! It is far from easy to be the bishop of a diocese. The demands of the office are beyond imagining. Naturally, there are all the sermons, homilies and addresses to be prepared for every possible occasion and a multitude of ceremonial functions. But that's the easy part. There is the administration of one of the largest dioceses in the nation and the attendant problems and challenges. Just think of some of them: vocations, the future of the schools and how to support the schools effectively, the scourge of drugs and alcohol, the ministry and responsibility to the poor, relationships with other religious communities, the fallen away Catholics, the mission to those who do not know Jesus Christ. The list simply goes on. Pastors are constantly asked by other priests how things are going in their parishes. They invariably answer that things are going great and, of course, the parish is active and thriving. In a certain sense, that is probably all true. Yet, in the midst of all the good things that go on in our parishes, the overwhelming fact is that in most cases 80% of Catholics are inactive and hardly ever enter a church. That weighs on me immensely and I am sure that every bishop feels exactly the same way. They have been consecrated to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and realize that many no longer listen to the saving words of Jesus. More than anybody else, bishops have the responsibility to seek out the lost sheep. Christ was so clear about what the good shepherd should be doing. He cannot be content with preaching to the choir, but must go out and look for those who have strayed. That task is far from easy!

4 St. Augustine knew how hard it is to be a bishop and all that will be asked of the bishop at judgment. Today I ask you to pray for Bishop Barres that Christ will give him the strength and courage to preach and teach the Catholic faith and to have a compassionate and loving heart. We need him and he needs our prayers. May God bless our new bishop and richly bless him and Bishop Murphy, the Bishop Emeritus of Rockville Centre. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald, Pastor PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Judy Eberson-Kostovik, Joan McDermott, Mark Matthews, Kathleen Gattis, Joyce French, Chris Lynch, Terry Laughlin, Bob Hesse, Margaret Cacioppo, Audrey Scott, Ann Tartaglia, Philip Capobianco, Deacon Frank Love, John Baglione, Rose Cascio, Kate Kengot, Imelda & Mariano Buenventura, Geoffrey Hamilton, Jo Jansen, Warren Schein, Sandra Lisanti Holecek, John Ahlstrom, Frances Mistretta, Antonia Lamberti, Frances Rakowski, Omar Duarte DECEASED Dominick Capodiferro, Josephine De Luca, Anna E. STEWARDSHIP 12/13/15 $27,523 12/11/16 $27,944 (+1.53%) RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT 06/14/15 $ 8,488 12/11/16 $ 6,516 (-23.23%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. PLEASE NOTE-There will be two collections next weekend (Christmas) - The first collection is the Christmas Collection. - The second collection is the regular weekly stewardship collection.

6 SPECIAL FRIENDS OF THE BLESSED MOTHER I must admit that I am a little uptight about this article. It s just that I really want to hit the mark and it is addressed to a special class of people. I call them the special friends of the Blessed Mother. For one thing, I m afraid that a lot of them may not get to read it and for another I m really depending on my faithful readers to help get this message out by encouraging as many as possible to read this. Who are these special friends anyway? Maybe not the ones you think. No, these people are in a very special category they are very scared and frightened and have probably been thinking and worrying for quite a while. You see they really want to go to confession and have probably heard or heard about my continual invitation to receive the Sacrament of Penance. Somehow or another they feel that their case is so difficult, so troubling, so complicated that they could never bring themselves to go to confession. They reason that everybody else can be helped but they can t. They imagine that the priest is going to embarrass or humiliate them or condemn them. They are so wrong! The exact opposite is true. The priest is the minister of Christ who came to heal, to console and to save. Jesus did not come to scold or make people feel bad about themselves. The priest enters the confessional to bring the mercy, peace and understanding of Jesus Christ and to remove the burden of guilt and sin. Let s just suppose you are one of these special friends of the Blessed Mother and you just can t bring yourself to get into the confessional. Here s what you should do: Take a deep breath, say a Hail Mary and get in the confession line. Don t even think about what you are going to say you might chicken out! When the priest opens the slide (if you go anonymously) or you see him in the face-to-face section, just say: I am a special friend of the Blessed Mother and he will take care of everything and make your confession a joyous and very happy moment. He will take extra care to put you at ease and make your experience a wonderful meeting with Christ the Good Shepherd who loves you so much and has been waiting for you. Do not let fear keep you apart from the Merciful Heart of Jesus. I think you all know how much I love and trust the Blessed Mother. You know then that all of her special friends, the ones she is praying for all the time, will be so very welcome. During these next few days I am hoping and praying to meet a whole lot of her special friends. Confession is available everyday by just coming to the Rectory office. There are special times for Confession during Christmas week. Please see the schedule in this bulletin. I will make it a point to be in my confessional 12:00 noon-6:00 PM on Christmas Eve.

It is basically a smaller version of the manger scene where Jesus was born. The display has figures of the Blessed Mother Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus. A fun fact: St. Francis is said to have popularized the concept of the crèche to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Don't forget to stop by the manger on Christmas Day to wish Jesus a Happy Birthday and thank him for coming into our lives!

13 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION 'Twas the week before Christmas and all across America... people were confused: The little town of Bethlehem, NY removed a sign that said "Merry Christmas" and then tore down the "Happy Hanukkah" sign to "solve" a (non-) problem. - A Texas county was censored by an atheist group for displaying Nativities without also displaying atheist Christmas scenes (huh?). - A Kentucky school censored the Bible passage Linus recites in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" to answer what the real meaning of Christmas is. - An Ohio school superintendent was censored and coerced into removing a Nativity scene displayed in her office window. (adflegal.org, 12/23/15; ffrf.org, 12/18/13) However: * "Private citizens or groups may display a creche or other Christmas symbol in public spaces subject to the same reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions that would apply to other similar displays." (Twelve Rules of Christmas, rutherford.org) * "Government entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday, such as Christmas trees and Christmas light displays, and may include creches in their displays as long as it is placed in context with other symbols of the Holiday season as part of an effort to celebrate the public Christmas holiday through its traditional symbols." (Twelve Rules of Christmas, rutherford.org) "The Constitution does not oblige government to avoid any public acknowledgement of religion's role in society." Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy
