Worship. Service. Formation.Celebration annual stewardship report saint anne catholic community

Rev. Bernard J. Pietrzak Dear People of Saint Anne, It has been a very exciting and wonderful time in the history of Saint Anne Catholic Community. We have completed a year where we have raised over $7,000,000 in pledges to make much needed improvements around our campus through our Legacy of Faith Campaign. It will take us 5 years to fulfill the pledges, but the momentum of the projects is beginning to show. I am always amazed and full of gratitude to you for what we continue to accomplish as God s People in our shared mission as a Catholic Community. This weekend, as it has been our custom, the Parish Finance Council presents our annual Parish Stewardship report. Mr. David Wirt, our Parish Finance Chair, will be speaking at all the Masses to offer some highlights of the financials for the fiscal year However, our Annual Parish Stewardship Report is more than simply the financials of a given fiscal year. The purpose of this report is to let you know how God s call to each of us to be good stewards of the many gifts we have received is reflected here in the life of our parish. This year, each of the Parish Commissions and the ministries of that particular Commission will offer you a glimpse of the variety of ways that we attempt to respond to our call to serve others as Disciples of Christ. Hopefully, you might find yourself called or inspired to find a place for you or your family to become more involved in the faith formation, worship, service and social activities of our parish. It is only through your generosity of service and talent, as well as your financial stewardship that we are able to create an environment that encourages us to work together and socialize together as we discover how best to live as faithful Catholics in our time and age. Our Christian service and the sharing of our talents for the good of our parish community is an outward sign of our faith, and serves as an extension of Christ s love. We need your talents and gifts of servant ministry for the continued growth of our community, if we are to continue to help the Lord God make Saint Anne a glimpse of the Reign of God among us and beyond. The past fiscal year ( ) has had some minor challenges. Overall we had a deficit for the year of $16,000. On a nearly $5 million dollar budget for the church and school, this is still a great accomplishment. We are, however, getting to the point that there are very few expenditures that are not fixed such as salary/ benefits, utilities and maintenance around the campus. Our Sunday offertory declined for the second year, as well as our tuition for the parish school. This trend can obviously not continue in the years to come. I trust that you agree, that we do not want to find ourselves with the need to dip into our parish savings that have been built up over the last several years. On this Stewardship weekend, I would like to thank t our weekly giving is such an important aspect to the success of our parish mission. I invite you to prayerfully consider the gifts that God has given you and to make a renewed commitment to the financial viability of our parish community. Please take some time to read this report and discover the vitality of our parish mission being concretely lived out and please recognize the importance of your weekly giving in support of our parish and how essential it is to our spiritual life as a faith community and the ongoing operations of the parish. Rev. Bernard J. Pietrzak Pastor

Worship The Worship Commission, with staff animators Georgene Farman and Rory Cooney, work throughout the year to see to it that the Sunday experience of worship is as ready as we can make it for people to open their hearts to the work of the Holy Spirit. That s how we see our work: we can t make people pray, we certainly can t make God show up, but we can trust that God is waiting for us, so we try to get distractions out of the way to enable people to relax and enter into the gentle, loving presence of the merciful God. We recruit, train & schedule 400 So our members and their teams prepare the look of the church: flowers, colors, furnishings. We gather and rehearse music with singers and instruments, adults, teens, and children. We recruit, train, and schedule our ministers: Children s Liturgy of the Word presiders, Lectors, Ushers and Greeters, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers and Captains, and Mass Coordinators, over 400 of them, about 140 per Sunday. They serve and pray with you with as transparent a presence as we can manage. This year our ministers received their annual morning of reflection this spring from Father Brad Zamora, then of Holy Name Cathedral and now part of the Mundelein Seminary faculty. The choir raised over $3,000 at the 2016 CropWalk. We made Evening Prayer and Stations available during Lent and Morning Prayer during the Triduum, as always. We hold bi-annual Wedding Music Fairs to empower prospective partners to plan their wedding liturgy with good sacramental principles. Our goal is to prepare the way of the Lord, both in ourselves and in the parish at large, through service in the liturgy. God does the heavy lifting. We just sing and do whatever needs to be done so that those who come to Saint Anne on Sunday morning, or any time, can have a good experience of worship in community. ministers Every Sunday 140 Mass ministers serve & pray with you

Human Concerns 72 Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to non-mobile parishioners Ministry of Care 72 parishioners are trained and commissioned lay Eucharistic Ministers of Care who represent our parish and bring Holy Communion to hospitals, nursing homes and retirement centers in the Barrington Community. They visit sick patients and residents at Good Shepherd Hospital, Journey Care and Green Castle Apartments. In addition, weekly communion services are conducted by our ministers at Lake Barrington Woods, Sunrise of Barrington, Alden Estates, Barrington Horizon, The Solana and The Garlands. Many homebound parishioners also receive communion in their homes each week, allowing them to remain connected to the liturgical life of Saint Anne. Ministry of Praise 94 parishioners are Ministers of Praise who participate in a spiritual ministry in which members offer their daily prayers found in a monthly booklet that highlights the intentions of our parish. It encourages bonding across generations and helps everyone feel connected to the parish. 46 parishioners participated in an Architectural Church Tour of five historic churches that had Year of Mercy Holy Doors designation in the Archdiocese of Chicago during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Churches included: Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, St. Hyacinth, St. Stanislaus Kostka, The National Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, and St. Michael Church. Bereavement Ministry 5 parishioners are trained Bereavement Ministers who support families who have experienced a loss of the passing of a loved one. They planned 56 funerals and coordinated each Mass of Christian burial. The ministers explain the rituals that are used by the Church, suggest songs and readings for the funeral liturgy. Seniors Group Saint Anne Seniors Group celebrated its second year of activity. The goals of the group are to regularly gather and provide social, educational, cultural and volunteer opportunities for our seniors. Activities include: Age- Reversing Workouts, Kennedy Watercolor Workshop, Knitting Group, Poker Group and Woodcarving Group. The Coffee & Conversation Group meets weekly on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Thane Hall. Members listen to engaging speakers present information on a variety of topics. The total membership is approximately 80 parishioners, with attendance and active participation averaging between 25 to 40 members per week. Highlights during the year included the Christmas Party, Veterans Luncheon and Western Hoedown. Special thanks to the steering committee for planning a wide array of interesting activities. Faithjustice This ministry responds to social justice issues in the community, the Archdiocese, the United States, and internationally. Faithjustice focuses on Education, Advocacy, and Action. We organize and coordinate the Saint Anne Lenten almsgiving program, as well as manage the quarterly Fair trade sale after masses. The funds raised support the missions we support. Volunteers cook and host an annual Community Meal at Saint Anne and during the fall we recruit walkers for the annual Crop Walk. Faithjustice works with St. Anne youth to involve and educate them on social justice challenges in our world.

Faith Formation and Education Saint Anne Lifelong Faith Formation offers opportunities for adults and children in both intergenerational and age-based settings. Participants of all ages engage in meaningful dialogue and learn to live out our gospel values through prayer and reflection, Mass participation, and service within and beyond our faith community. During the program year, we had 301 adults and 547 children participate in a variety of formation opportunities and sacrament preparation. In grades 1-5, 306 children participated in Children s Faith Formation to learn our faith and begin to understand how we are asked to live with and love one another. After having celebrated First Reconciliation in January, 118 of our children received First Eucharist in the spring. These celebrations were filled with great joy as family, friends, and parish community were witness to these children fully participating in the Mass for the first time. The 99 middle school teens in Journey packed and delivered 125 care packages for seniors through Caring and Sharing, traveled to Saint Columbanus to sort and bag the parish s November food drive donations, and made Christmas cards and ornaments and baked cookies for seniors and Project Hope food pantry clients. Our SPRED program ministers to persons with developmental or intellectual challenges, demonstrating through their generous leaders God s infinite love for them. Over 400 people of all ages participated in intergenerational Community Events to experience and share faith together, departing each session having made new friends in the parish and learning new ways to integrate faith into everyday life. Many adults also participated in learning and discussion groups and a Lenten prayer journey. None of this could have happened without more than 100 dedicated adult and teen volunteers who blessed us as catechists, babysitters, chaperones, hall monitors, hospitality service, and anything else we could dream up we are grateful beyond measure for your generous contributions! 306 1st-5th graders were enrolled in religious education 118 Children received their First Eucharist

The Youth Ministry program of Saint Anne is a comprehensive program that seeks to address the needs of high school students from both Catholic and public high schools. The major programs are: the Paths confirmation program; the Kairos retreat program; Peer Ministry; Soup and Supper ministry; Summer Service Mission trips to West Virginia and the development of teen leadership to lead and facilitate these programs. The Paths two year program consists of 8 small home groups and 4 large groups that meet in the Parish gym for keynote speakers in the course of the year. There are 130 students in each of the two years, with 40 catechists teaching them. We have added one more supplemental text to the second year Paths program entitled Mission. This is authored by Fr. Mark Link, S.J. and provides daily meditations based on the readings of the day in the Catholic Lectionary. Our hope is that students will in time make daily reflection on Scripture a part of their life, based on this simple, but relevant format of Link s book. Our two Kairos retreats have a total of 85 students attending the retreats, led by an additional 8 senior leaders and 4-5 adults. The team meets 5 to 6 times in preparation for a today of 20 hours. Peer Ministry meets throughout the year on Sunday evenings after the 5:15 Mass in Thane Hall. During this time they discuss relevant topics of faith and culture and share a meal together. There is a core of 15 people attending in the course of the year, overseen by two adult parishioners. Soup/suppers drive the Southside of Chicago 10 times a year, with two adults using the parish van and anywhere for 4 to 8 students attending. Once students go on this once, many become devoted to the program, excited by the radical experience of meeting people s needs in a place quite different from their home community. The annual summer service trip to West Virginia continues to grow with more people interested each year. It is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The most recent trip went with 45 students and 10 adults, driving 5 vans the 650 mile trip to Hinton, West Virginia. We repaired three main sites painting, building decks and cleaning up garbage from some poorly maintained residences. We also interact with the local residents, which is a highlight for the students. The two confirmation retreats, entitled Spiritus as well as the Kairos retreats are run by student leaders. Each of these retreats spend time developing students in reflecting on their life of faith and helping them create a witness talk in which they talk about their growth in the life of the spirit. This is a great honor for the students, and many continue this ministry work as they move into college. These student leaders are also invited in to address the large Paths meetings throughout the year. 260 High school students are enrolled in PATHS 85 Students participated in Kairos

170 Active young married couples 152 Baptisms Baptism We continue to welcome new members into the Saint Anne Catholic Community through our celebration of baptism. Over the course of this past year, we have baptized 152 children. RCIA welcomed 2 individuals into full sacramental relationships with the Catholic community this past Easter. This process engages the whole community of Saint Anne in welcoming, accompanying, forming, and celebrating these individuals journeys into closer relationship with God and neighbor. The Young Marrieds Group continues to grow the original 6 members of the steering committee celebrated their last year with amazing growth; the group now boasts 170 members. The group s Scavenger hunt had 20 couples in attendance in fellowship, fun, and discovery of Barrington; its Afternoon of Renewal had 15 couples together for prayerful reflection and fun. The Young Marrieds Group was present for several other Barrington and Saint Anne events, reaching out to young couples and families looking for community. Women s Faith Time offered two mornings of reflection throughout the year for the women of the Saint Anne community, building relationship with one another and God.

Saint Anne Parish School 2006 & 2016 Award Winning Blue Ribbon School 50% of the faculty have advanced degrees Saint Anne Parish School is proud to be named a twotime award winning school for Academic Excellence determined by the US Department of Education! Saint Anne was named a 2016 and 2006 National Blue Ribbon School because of our academically superior performance. Only 50 non-public schools are selected every year, and it is indeed an honor and privilege to earn this award multiple times! Our mission is to grow servant leaders from the inside out while maximizing the potential in every child. Our students learn to have a growth mindset by setting goals, tracking their progress, and celebrating their achievements both inside and outside the classroom. At Saint Anne Parish School, we celebrate the vital role that we play in preparing our children and young people to become successful scholars, responsible citizens, and faith-filled Catholics who will have a lifelong relationship with God. We are very proud of our programs and the opportunities we offer to our children and their families as they begin their educational journey in this loving, Catholic community. We pride ourselves on offering comprehensive offerings in school and after school for children ranging from preschool through eighth grade! Our administration and teachers are highly-qualified, degreed, state certified educators. Almost half of our faculty has advanced degrees and a third also hold Secondary Education Certification. They model the importance of lifelong learning by their commitment to continue their education in an effort to remain current in best practices. Annual Highlights: Jog-A-Thon 2016 & 2017 raised money for updates to our Technology Program and the Technology Lab. We are looking to bring in a 21st Century Learning space and STREAM-focused lab to that area in the future. The Sister Ann Busch Scholarship Fund is a need-based scholarship fund that continues to provide assistance to families committed to Catholic education. The Student Leadership Commission works in conjunction with the Human Concerns Commission to coordinate a vision to contribute funds raised through school activities to charitable organizations. Our faculty and students, in conjunction with the Sharing Board, are very committed to the relationship we have with our sharing parish, St. Frances of Rome in Cicero and continue to enjoy visits and pen pal activities. Safety Review Saint Anne School takes pride in our safety measures and we continue to improve and update our safety initiatives.

Legacy of Faith Campaign In the past year, Saint Anne initiated the Legacy of Faith campaign to raise funds for major repairs to church and school facilities, maintenance projects, a reallocation of space and a plan to retire the parish debt related to the construction of our beautiful church campus over twenty years ago. The goals of the five-year campaign are based on a comprehensive study by parish leaders to assess the short and long terms needs of the parish, as well as the parish transformation process conducted in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Chicago over the last two years to integrate our parish mission with our ministries. The truly exceptional and generous commitment from donors to this endeavor enabled our faith community to not only meet our goal of $6,000,000, but helped us raise nearly $7,300, in pledges. Through early campaign donations, as well as payments through the green envelopes over the years, the first priority was achieved early in the campaign retiring the nearly $600,000 in building debt from the last capital campaign 20 years ago. Below is a list of the preliminary campus projects supported by Legacy of Faith. Repair the rose windows in the church Repair the baptismal font in the church Replace the roof of our chapel Repair certain areas of the school roof Replace and reinforce the asphalt pavement in parking lots throughout the Saint Anne campus Repair the stonework outside the church and school Replace the carpet in the church, parish library, Family Room, Hospitality Room and chapel Repair the front doors of the church In addition, we are evaluating significant repairs and upgrades to the heating and air conditioning systems in the church and school buildings. We are also considering a cost-effective shift to LED lighting in our buildings, which will lower our electric bills and potentially take advantage of rebate programs.

Hope Ministries For Hope Ministries, this was a wonderful year of new ideas, effective partnerships, and continued service to our neighbors in crisis. Because of the hard work of our dedicated volunteers, Project Hope was able to serve 11,500 people with food, clothing, transportation, health, or housing assistance. This figure is a 28% increase over the number of people assisted last year. Through the donations of generous supporters and the diligence of passionate volunteers, the House of Hope Resale Store had a very successful year, which allowed Hope Ministries, for the first time in the history of the program, to fully fund every eligible Grants of Hope (formerly known as Gifts of Hope) request. There were two new Grants of Hope applicants this year, Home of the Sparrow and Fellowship Housing, both of whom specialize in housing. Since affordable housing is one of the most urgent needs in our community, Hope Ministries was pleased to establish partnerships and utilize these organizations as referral sources for our clients. Hope Ministries developed a new program this year entitled Caring and Sharing Gifts of Hope, which presents opportunities to gift local organizations with project specific items that adhere to the mission of Hope Ministries. It also allows us another vehicle through which we may responsibly spend Hope Ministry funds on the poor. We expect Caring and Sharing Gifts of Hope to grow exponentially and reach its full potential in Last year we served 11,500 people in crisis
