1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., North Chesterfield, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: November 2012 Dear friends, One of the very many blessings I have received serving BAPC over these past few months is the opportunity do some continuing education to strengthen my knowledge and skills for ministry. I m in the middle of a class taught at the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care on ministry with persons dealing with addiction. I ve learned a lot about chemical addictions during the past few weeks, but I ve also learned a lot about the ways in which all kinds of things can substitute for our spiritual longings. Gerald May, a physician and spiritual director, wrote a book a number of years ago entitled, Addiction and Grace. May tells us that the human brain has an innate tendency to form emotional attachments, and these attachments permanently affect the wiring of the brain so that old cravings we thought we had left behind long ago can be triggered by all kinds of things. What is interesting is that this doesn t apply only to chemicals we take into our bodies, but also to relationships, to different kinds of good habits such as exercise, and to ways of thinking or feeling. All of these, according to May, can become addictions. Another way to say this is that any of them can begin to take over our lives, making us less free and more locked into patterns of life that keep us from being open to the renewing and redeeming work of God s Spirit. I m reminded of this as we get closer to the holiday season. All of those old associations, those triggers, are bound to come up again, and the old cravings will surely follow. For me, as for many, it s food! The smell of a Thanksgiving turkey already makes me start reaching for Christmas cookies! For others, it may be overindulgence with alcohol, or it may be unrealistic expectations about family warmth and togetherness, or it may be anger from past hurts we have not let go, or depression that began with a healthy process of grief but eventually became something we came to rely on. The point is, we have an ongoing tendency to have certain desires and feelings because they are now wired into our brains, and we expect to face those feelings again, and again. But May s book isn t just about addiction it is also about grace! That is, God equips us with resources to detach from our cravings. When we cultivate our own personal spirituality (our relationship to God) and as we lean on the help of others, we can gain strength and find freedom. If you re like me, you need grace to help you enjoy the holidays in the best and most faithful way. I m no doctor, but I m going to prescribe for myself plenty of time for prayer and meditation, along with accountability to a community of faith (this one!) to help keep me strong and free for life with God in the world. I hope you will join me. Blessings, Tom James Temporary Supply Pastor Inside this month... Dear Friends, The flowers which you sent last Sunday really added a touch of good cheer to my room and were admired by all who came here. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and prayers during my recovery. Louise Mallory Many thanks to our Bon Air Presbyterian family for your phone calls, cards and prayers during the recent passing of my Dad. It means so much to us to know that others care at a time like this. Sincerely, Joan Jackson & Family Most of our friends and acquaintances in the church are already aware that we moved to the Brandermill Woods Retirement Community a few months ago. Due to the added distance, we have decided that it is in our best interest to affiliate with a church closer to home. We have found that to be The Brandermill Church, and will soon become members there. For almost fifteen years, we have enjoyed our relationship with Bon Air Presbyterian and we leave with fond memories. Best wishes to all. 3 OUTREACH November 2012 PAGE 3 Opportunities to Serve Christ.to Make a Difference Children s Thanksgiving Offering The Thanksgiving Offering will be taken Sunday, November 18. This offering has been designated to benefit the following Presbyterian Ministries: Volunteer Emergency Families for Children Their mission is helping children and youth in crisis. They recruit, train and support volunteers who provide short-term shelter care and mentoring to abused, neglected, runaway, homeless and at-risk children and youth. Since 1979 they have reached out to over 15,000 children and youth in crisis. Presbyterian Children s Home of the Highlands They have provided a restorative ministry in a Christian environment to abused and neglected children of the Appalachian region of Virginia since In order to accomplish their mission they have an accredited on-campus school, individual and group counseling, vocational training and exposure to a variety of cultural and educational activities. Presbyterian Homes and Family Services Since 1903 this organization has seen to the spiritual, mental and physical needs of abused and neglected children and mentally challenged adults. Homes are located in Lynchburg, Zuni, Fredericksburg, South Hill and Waynesboro. Edmarc Hospice for Children Located in Chesapeake this group has been caring for children with life threatening illnesses and their families since Currently it ministers to over 200 families, including the siblings of the ill child. It provides skilled nursing services to the very sick children in their home as well as a vast array of supportive services. Freedom House Volunteers For 2013 BAPC has prepared casseroles for Freedom House for many years. We are looking to add some volunteers to the program. We have cooks, servers, and drivers who volunteer 6 times per year. Check out the descriptions and see which job is calling to you. Cooks pick up a pan and recipe every other month. Buy the ingredients and prepare the casserole as instructed. Place the uncooked casserole in the church refrigerator on the designated day. Drivers pick up the casseroles at our church one Thursday every other month and deliver them to the Conrad Center. This task can be done anytime after 11:30am and before 4pm. Servers go to the Conrad Center one Thursday evening every other month and serve the casseroles to the guests. It s very easy and it helps a lot of people! We also have a list of substitutes for those who cannot commit to six times a year, but can help out when needed. If you feel called to serve in this way, please contact Alisha Gallini at awgallini@aol.com or before December 15. Thank you! Stewardship What is in your Pledge Pocket now? Is it ready for its primary inhabitant: the pledge card? Will its coins, bills, and notes tell you how you might fill out this year's pledge card: the one for 2013? Has the number stepped up from last year's card? Has your salary or retirement pension stepped up? Calvin, our primary Presbyterian ancestor, referred to salary as something sacred, a concrete expression of God's care for us in knowing that we need money. But money can make us or break us; it can be a blessing or a curse; it can drive us closer to God or it can drive us further away. Our use is our sacred choice for spending wisely and joyfully, a tool for understanding ourselves and what we believe.
4 PAGE 4 OUTREACH November 2012 Second Sunday South of the James November 11-4:00 p.m. Concert pianist Charles Staples, director of music ministries at Trinity United Methodist Church on Forest Avenue, will perform for the Second Sunday South of the James Concert Series on Sunday, November 11, at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Admission will be by free-will donation. Information is available at Communion Bread From time to time our church celebrates communion using different breads or different methods. In October for World Communion Sunday, our own Shawn Thomas baked the bread for us. For December, our youth will be baking the bread. Sometimes we have what we call "Breads of the World" to represent unity in diversity. This most often happens close to Pentecost (in June) but we have chosen to do this other times of the year as well. Out of respect for all and our unique diversity of our congregation and the styles of communion that are part of each original church tradition, we also include Intinction from time to time. This is often selected due to the time of year or season. Sacraments is part of the Worship Division. We understand and respect the vital importance of Communion and we take care and thought in our communion preparation duties as well as recruiting Elders to serve. Thank you, Barb Nehls Sacristy Co-Chair. Communion Bread. 7 OUTREACH November 2012 PAGE 7 PNC Update Tom James excellent sermon last week entitled "THE LONG ROUTE" aptly describes our PNC process of discernment in our call of a Senior Pastor for BAPC. (If you weren't able to attend worship last week, we encourage you to go on our website to read it, or ask the office for a hard copy) Thus far, we have received 200 PIFS (Personal Information Forms) from a wide variety of prospective candidates. We continue to review PIFS, then develop a working list of those whose sermons we would like to hear. Further refinement of this list leads to a phone interview of some, and a personal meeting or a visit to their home church or a neutral pulpit. In this manner, we are trying to move beyond the printed page of the PIF, a single sermon on a CD, and bring into perspective the whole person who we feel will best serve BAPC now and in the future. Tempted as we might be, there are no shortcuts in this process. Guided by the HOLY SPIRIT, and always bolstered by positive participation of the congregation in the full life of the church. The PNC continues on what many think is a longer road than they anticipated. We continue to ask for your prayers and encourage your presence in worship...please don't sit this one out waiting to see who might end up in the pulpit. We all are the church; we each have an active role to play...come join us, enjoy the fellowship, excellent sermons and wonderful music of collective worship which is vital during this time of transition. John Rupp, Moderator PNC Mature Moderns November 16-10:00 a.m. For its November 16 program, Mature Moderns welcomes one of Richmond's finest organists, Bruce Stevens, whose topic is "Visiting Great European Pipe Organs." In addition to Mr. Stevens' commentary, there will be projected pictures, sound excerpts, and a few film segments as we enjoy the varying styles of organs in Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, and England. This program will delight both our eyes and our ears. We hope that you will join us at 10:00 a.m. for refreshments, followed by the program at 10:30 a.m. Please bring your neighbors and friends, too.
