1 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY March 30, th Sunday in Lent 11:00 a.m. (LARGE PRINT BULLETINS, HYMNALS, PEW BIBLES AND ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES ARE AVAILABLE FROM OUR USHERS) *Please stand, if able. GATHERING AS THE PEOPLE OF GOD GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS COMMISSIONING JUSTICE MINISTERS The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Shawn Thomas Smith, Janet Winslow PRELUDE Caroline Haines, Student Organist Chorale Prelude on Herzliebster Jesu Helmut Walcha Jacob Smouse, Acolyte CHORAL INTROIT Spirit of God Enfold Me Simon Lole Chancel Choir *INVITATION TO WORSHIP Nancy Van Auken A song of Lent, arising from our life together. A song of praise, redeeming our tragedies and celebrating our triumphs. A song of joy to God, who revels in our uniqueness and delights in our commonness. A love song to God, who tends the wounds of the heart, who restores hope to the despairing, who brings light into the darkness and blesses us each day. *OPENING PRAYER Lord God, be with us as we continue our Lenten journey. As we hear your word and sing praises, may we celebrate and give thanks for your wondrous mercies. As we share in fellowship and focus in prayer, may we grow in discipleship and come to know the hope and promise of the cross of Jesus Christ, our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen. *SONG OF PRAISE When Morning Gilds the Skies Number 487 PRAYER OF CONFESSION Divine Companion, you meet us every day, in the ordinary moments of encounter, in the common hungers of life. Yet, how often we miss you, failing to look deep enough, failing to stay long enough, failing to hear clear enough. We confess to setting up narrow boundaries, maintaining established prejudices, refusing to shift perceptions and thus miss the new thing you are doing. In this season of Lent, send your living water to wear away our rocklike defenses so that we may forgive as we are forgiven. (Silent, personal confession) PRAYER RESPONSE You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy! ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVING FORGIVENESS Friends, the Good News is this: While we were yet sinners, Jesus Christ came to forgive, to redeem and to restore us to right relationship with God. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Amen. *SONG OF PRAISE Number 68, vs. 4 To God the Father, God the Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in one, May every tongue and nation raise and endless song of thankful praise! HEARING GOD S WORD TO US CHILDREN S CONVERSATION Young children may leave for an enrichment program following the conversation. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Lord of our lives, we know you are always present to us. Help us to be present to you as we prepare to hear your word as revealed in the Scriptures. Keep us alert that we might hear, and through our hearing, respond. Amen. READING FROM THE PSALMS Psalm 119:17-24 THE WORD IN MUSIC Chancel Choir & Aaron Jones, Soloist When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Gilbert Martin GOSPEL READING Luke 6:27-42 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! SERMON Conditional Forgiveness Shawn Thomas Smith

2 RESPONDING WITH FAITH AND GRATITUDE *PROCLAIMING OUR FAITH The Apostles Creed (Ecumenical) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *SONG OF FAITH God, How Can We Forgive Insert PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE In your loving mercy, Lord; You hear our prayers. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING Pastoral Song - Jean Langlais *SONG OF PRAISE Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Number 592 Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him all creatures here below. Praise him above ye heaven host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION For every gift we have received, we give you thanks. For every gift we can give you, we give thanks. Accept these gifts, O Lord, as a sign of our obedience to you, our love for you and our desire for your reign in our world. Transform our gifts into your blessing for others, through Jesus Christ. Amen. *SONG OF DEDICATION There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Number 298 *BENEDICTION *CHORAL RESPONSE *POSTLUDE Choral Amen Pasticcio - Jean Langlais

3 SCRIPTURE READINGS Psalm 119:17-24 (page 696, Old Testament) 17 Deal bountifully with your servant, so that I may live and observe your word. 18 Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. 19 I live as an alien in the land; do not hide your commandments from me. 20 My soul is consumed with longing for your ordinances at all times. 21 You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments; 22 take away from me their scorn and contempt, for I have kept your decrees. 23 Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. 24 Your decrees are my delight, they are my counselors. Luke 6:27-42 (Page 78, New Testament) 27 But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. 39 He also told them a parable: Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck in your neighbor s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your neighbor, Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye, when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor s eye.
