1 OUTREACH Seeking and Serving Christ to Make a Difference May, 2017 ROMEO s will meet May 9, Noon Peking Restaurant Call Don Thornburg The Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m., Library. The book is Care of Wooden Floors Joan Baker is the leader. Please bring your choice of book for September. ADDING OUR OWN CHAPTER TO THE GOSPEL STORY On Easter Sunday, we heard the Resurrection narrative from the cliffhanging Gospel of Mark. Jesus was nowhere to be found and the women were so terrified that they ran off without saying a word, just like the disciples did on the day of Jesus arrest. Mark s Gospel left us waiting for a sequel to wrap it all up. Or, could it be that the Gospel is a never-ending story that encourages believers in each generation to continue the story, to speak the Good News for themselves, and bring the Gospel into dialogue with their lives and in their times? Brothers and sisters in Christ, the story of the Gospel s good news now belongs to us. What will we write in the chapter that we pass on to the next generation? Where do we find our Risen Lord in our times? How are we transformed and transforming, forgiven and forgiving, loved and loving? During the Easter Season, the Sundays between Easter and Pentecost, our worship themes will explore how we compose our own chapter of the Gospel story by being the body of Christ, the Church. Some folks mistakenly think that the church is simply a place where we go on Sunday mornings. The truth is that we don t go to church, we are the church! The church is not a building, it is believers who are actively engaged in the ministry of Jesus Christ. In fact, consider the word church, not as a noun, but a verb. The church is the engagement of people of faith with the Lord, the Word, and God s people in the congregation, the community and beyond. The church is the embodiment, the incarnation, of Jesus Christ in the world today. The church is the dynamic revelation of God s kingdom on earth. Join us each Sunday morning as we affirm that we are the church. Join us as we engage in the audacious endeavor of writing our own chapter as we live out the Gospel imperative to BE THE CHURCH! What a blessing it is to join you in this composition. Pastor Janet How will we be remembered? What faith, what values, what church will we pass on to the next generation? Let s not sit passively by and let our chapter be written for us. Be the authors of our own legacy. Be the church! The SSSJ Concert Series concluded on April 29. The Bluegrass Concert scheduled for May 21 will not be held. April 30 May 7 May 14 May 21 May 28 June 4 Be Bold Be Involved Be Contagious Be Faithful Be Confident Be Passionate

3 OUTREACH May, 2017 PAGE 3 BUILDING FOR OUR FUTURE Session Takes Strategic Action At the January Session meeting, the Feasibility Study summary and recommendations were reported by consultant, Sean Mitchell, of Generosity Development. The presentation was the result of months of assessment of our congregation s willingness to support a capital campaign focused on the development of the Welcome Corridor. Sean concluded that the possible proceeds of a capital campaign may be in the range of $550,000 and $575,000. The highest priority project components for the campaign are recommended to include asbestos removal, bathroom renovation, new doors, and HVAC. Following the Feasibility Study Report, the Building Utilization Committee was commissioned to develop a scaled-back building renovation plan that would fit the projected capital campaign proceeds. The committee met with Huff Morris Architects and three potential general contractors to work together in developing revised plans for the renovation with focus placed on the areas of greatest priority. The Building Utilization Committee also developed a preliminary timeline of how the capital campaign proceeds would be used and how much would be available for construction. The analysis was based on a monthly cash flow model and includes estimated pre-construction costs (architectural and plan development), capital campaign consultant costs, interest expenses for a short-term construction loan, contingency fund, expected unfulfilled pledges, capital campaign benevolence component, and the use of some campaign funds for current maintenance needs and the replenishment of the deferred maintenance fund. The analysis and timeline were thoroughly discussed with the Session. The Building Utilization Committee also developed a general timeline for the capital campaign, funding, and construction which was also presented to the Session. Since the project construction will begin with asbestos removal, it is hoped that the construction would begin during the summer of 2018 when worship services could more easily be moved to the Fellowship Hall and the preschool program would not be in session. Therefore, the initiation of a capital campaign should be expedited. Effective funding of the construction project will involve obtaining a construction loan to fund the project until all of the pledges from the capital campaign have been received. However, the plans were developed with the assumption that there will be no outstanding debt once all capital campaign funds are received. The current cash flow analysis suggests that a loan would be in the range of $249,000 to $274,000. Any loan recommended by the Session must be approved by a congregational vote. Based on an extended discussion with the Building Utilization Committee regarding their findings and recommendations, the Session took the following actions: Approved the selection of Century Construction to initially work with Huff Morris Architects to develop a revised renovation/construction plan and to ultimately oversee the construction of the project. Century Construction agrees to provide pre-construction services without charging a fee if they serve as contractors for the construction project, Approved the formation of a slate of candidates for a Capital Campaign Committee in order to expedite the launch of a campaign, Approved the use of Sean Mitchell of Generosity Development to serve as a consultant to guide and facilitate the capital campaign, Approved a committee to investigate obtaining a short-term loan for the initial funding of the renovation. Questions and requests for additional information may be directed to members of the Session or the Building Utilization Committee: Darin Smouse, Pete Gallini, Paul Beigbeder, and Barbara Jacocks.
4 PAGE 4 OUTREACH May, 2017 SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE Monday, May 29 10:00 a.m. in our Sanctuary Join us as we honor those who are serving, have served, or have lost their lives in service to our country defending our freedoms. We will spend time in prayer and reflection, recognize veterans and their families, sing patriotic songs, and read the names of Virginians lost in the line of duty during the past year. Forgo the crowds and traffic at the Virginia War Memorial. Invite your friends and neighbors. TRIALOGUE INTERFAITH DISCUSSIONS Addressing the Growing Fear in Our Society Interfaith dialogue helps us to get to know our neighbors as we deepen our mutual understanding and appreciation for the three Abrahamic faith traditions. These gatherings also provide important opportunities to address religious and moral issues we face during this stressful time of misunderstanding in our nation. The three Thursday evening meetings are scheduled from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Following a brief presentation by the faith leaders, all participants form groups with members representing various faith traditions and discuss the topics among themselves. Come a few minutes early and enjoy refreshments and fellowship before the meetings. Everyone, adults and teens, are encouraged to join these meaningful discussions. April 27 at St. Edward Catholic Church (Dolfield Dr. at Huguenot Rd.) May 11 at 2017: OR AMI (9400 W. Huguenot Rd.) May 18 at the Islamic Center of Virginia (1241 Buford Rd.) During the season of Lent, many of us participated in The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. This bible study provided an insight into how Jesus ministry shaped and touched the lives of all those he encountered. Through his teachings we are called to use our time, talents, treasure, gifts, hearts and minds to continue to spread his message in the world today. Our Stewardship Ministry Team is asking you to consider ways you might serve, lead and make a difference. Your completion of an on-line survey, beginning May 14, will help all ministry team leaders to recognize your unique and valuable skills and interests. Paper surveys will be available for those that are unable to complete the survey on-line. All responses are desired by Thursday, May 25.

7 OUTREACH May, 2017 PAGE 7 IMAGINE! traumatized children receiving immediate and compassionate emotional support, unfilled health services jobs being filled by welltrained and eager workers who were previously underemployed, all children becoming excited and successful learners because they are proficient readers, those entering the workforce finding available and affordable housing. When we join together with other Richmonders Involved in Strengthening Our Community (RISC) we make dramatic differences in the lives of our neighbors. We can t do it alone, however when we stand with our partner congregations, 1,700 come together to let the decision makers know that we stand for justice, we stand with our neighbors in need, we stand in faith and response to the call of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This year, our goal is to have 100 OF OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS stand together at the NEHEMIAH ACTION ASSEMBLY Monday, May 1, at 7:00 p.m. (Doors open 6:15 p.m.) Carpools leave our church at 5:30 p.m. St. Paul s Baptist Church, 4247 Creighton Rd, Richmond, Sign up on the bulletin board in the Church Office Lobby. Bring a friend! JOIN US AS WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER ELEMENTARY READING The Problem: 15 elementary schools are unaccredited in reading in Henrico, most in Eastern Henrico. More than 1/4 of the students in these schools failed reading, increasing their risk of dropping out of high school and going to jail. RISC s Proven Solution: Direct Instruction reading curriculum has shown 40 years of impressive results in teaching struggling students. Buckingham County, VA reports student reading proficiency increased from 40% to 98% in 2 years! What Now? Richmond Public Schools & City Council officials recently approached RISC to work on a pilot program of Direct Instruction in RPS! At the Action, we will ask Richmond and Henrico schools to implement this reading curriculum. HEALTHCARE JOBS HOTLINE The Problem: In Richmond s most distressed neighborhoods, only 10% of adult residents have full-time jobs with benefits. RISC s Proven Solution: A healthcare careers pipeline connecting our community s workforce centers (which provide training and support services) with our region s hospitals, where over 500 entry-level jobs go unfilled each year and promising career paths abound. What Now? Because of RISC s work, HCA Hospitals and VCU Health have committed to recruit employees from the workforce centers to fill these in-demand jobs! At the Action, we will ask the hospitals and other stakeholders to followthrough on their commitments. CHILDHOOD TRAUMA The Problem: 90% of children and youth treated for mental illness in our region have experienced trauma; including abuse; neglect; witnessing domestic or community violence; divorce, death, or incarceration of parents; and living in poverty. In Chesterfield County, 1 in 12 children live in poverty and the effects of poverty, community violence, and other possibly traumatic experiences is evident. RISC s Proven Solution: In communities like Walla Walla, WA, schools have trained their staff to respond to traumatized children resulting in school suspensions dropping from 798 to 135 in just one school year! What Now? At the Action, we will ask Chesterfield schools to acknowledge the impacts of trauma on their students and take steps, in collaboration with other county agencies, to explore an evidence-based trauma training for school staff.
