An elephant was brought to the village. They had no idea what it was, so they decided to go and find out. Each one of them touched the elephant in order to know what an elephant was through their hands. "Hey, the elephant is a pillar," said the first man who touched his leg. "Oh, no! it is like a rope," said the second man who touched the tail. "Oh, no! it is like a thick branch of a tree," said the third man who touched the trunk of the elephant. "It is like a big hand fan" said the fourth man who touched the ear of the elephant. "It is like a huge wall," said the fifth man who touched the belly of the elephant. "It is like a solid pipe," Said the sixth man who touched the tusk of the elephant. They began to argue about the elephant and each one of them got agitated, insisting that he was right. A wise man passing by saw this. He asked them, "What is the matter?" They said, "We cannot agree to what the elephant is like." Each one of them told what he thought the elephant was like. The wise man calmly explained to them, "All of you are right. The reason each one of you is telling it differently is because each one of you touched a different part of the elephant. Actually, the elephant has all those features that you have said." "Oh!" everyone said. There was no more fight. They felt happy knowing they were all right. Sometimes we hold on to our own perspective of things so tightly that we allow it to get in the way of our relationships with others. We are blinded by our pride, our ego, our (you name it). It gets in the way of respecting one another. It gets in the way of caring for each other. It gets in the way of relationships. If we take a moment and step back and look at things from another person s perspective we might find that we are on the same elephant after all. Moving to view things from another spot gives us a way of opening up to one another instead of dividing us. Jesus came to the world to experience things from our perspective by taking on human form. He did it out of love. When we love as he loved us, it enables us to view the elephant from the other s perspective. We are then able to care more fully, respect wholly, and love unconditionally as Christ did. Peace, Pastor Pam
