1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., Richmond, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: June 2011 No Longer Strangers As June dawns my thoughts turn to slower days, kids out of school and the chance for more time with family. While Summer is commonly known for its family vacations of car trips, beach weeks, camps and cook-outs, it is really appropriate to consider the whole year a time for developing family relationships. Such building includes the family in your household, as well as your extended family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. The real bonus of spending time with family is never knowing, ultimately, the benefit your time and experience will have on another, especially a child. One of the most well-known diary entries of the 19 th century well illustrates this point. Charles Francis Adams, diplomat, vice-presidential candidate, son and grandson of U.S. presidents, was, as so many of his family, also a noted diarist. One brief entry in his journal read thus: Went fishing with my son today, a day wasted Trained as his father and grandfather to be observant, young Brooks Adams, on the same day, noted in his journal, Went fishing with my father, the most wonderful day of my life! Wow! What a difference. The father thought being away from his political duties while fishing with his son, was not worthwhile. At the same time, his son saw it as the investment of a lifetime. The only way to tell the difference between wasting time and investing is to know one s ultimate purpose in life and choose accordingly. As the summer dawns, I pray each of you will have an opportunity to invest in the relationships that surround you closest. Shalom, Gordon Inside this month... 3 OUTREACH June 2011 PAGE 3 Opportunities to Serve Christ.to Make a Difference THANKS!... to all who made the Rebuilding Together Richmond project a success. Very early on Saturday, April 30, sixteen eager workers showed up at Mrs. Brown s house for a full day of repair and renovation. The day ended with a group of very tired but contented friends and a job well done for a very happy home owner. Harold Greer and Robert Halpern co-captained the crew and were heartily assisted by Louise Armstrong, Laura Greer, Harold Houghton, Linda Johnston, Barbara Jacocks, Kathy and Steve Kelly, Paul Leatherman, Gordon and Stuart Mapes, Jerry and Lorraine Quigg, Mark Siegel, and David Flowers, Robert s brother-in-law. Judy Holland, Kay Richardson, and Joy Winstead provided lunch. Check the bulletin board for pictures of the house and the work in progress. Pentecost Offering The Pentecost Offering will be taken on June 12 th. This offering provides a way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. The benefits can be seen all around us. Congregations are utilizing new ways to minister to children at risk in their communities. General Assembly programs are advocating for children and providing leadership development opportunities for youth and young adults. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised over $8 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God s family. 20% of the Offering will be used locally for a program called CHAT, Church Hill Activities and Tutoring. They are dedicated to transforming the lives of at-risk youth in Church Hill through academic instruction, character development, life skills training, job readiness and health and wellness activities. 10% will be donated to the Daughters of Zelophehad. Women who seeking their services receive spiritual growth and programs that prepare them for independent living. CARITAS is coming July 9-16 Watch for volunteer signup sheets at the bulletin board in the church lobby. Please contact Darin Smouse with any questions at or darin.smouse@gmail.com" 70% of the Offering will be donated to the General Assembly to support youth ministries. First by creating the theme, schedule, registration materials, and planning how to promote the 2013 Presbyterian Youth Triennium. Secondly they will spread the word about the new online youth ministry resource Quicksheets. Lastly they plan to increase awareness and use of d365.org, a website co-sponsored by the PC(USA).
