2 we join our voices with the saints of all times and places in singing your glory: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. we tell others of that mystery we call faith: Christ died, so we might have life; Christ arose, so we might have hope of resurrection; Christ will come again to unite us with the saints. Hear us, now, as we pray as Christ taught us Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE COMMEMORATION OF THE SAINTS IN OUR LIVES Today, we stand beside saints in the making. 3 Philippians 4: SCRIPTURE READING 10 I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. 11 Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. 14 In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. Luke 21: 1-4 He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; 2 he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 He said, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4 for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on. REMEMBERING THE SAINTS As you prepare for worship on this All Saints Sunday, give special thanks for those particular saints who are directly responsible for your commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Remember how they modeled Christian discipleship in your lives by their love. Today, we remember: Claire Dixon, Russ Wilson, Louise Rush, Hertha Rogers, Edward Jones, Marjorie Hephner. For all the saints who went before us, who have spoken to our hearts and touched us with your grace, we thank you, dear Lord. 5 FEARLESS GIVING FEARLESS GIVING Many people today are afraid to give because they fear that they will outlive their resources. A few years ago, an eighty year-old woman with assets in the multimillion-dollar range was asked to make a six-figure gift to a ministry. She declined, stating that she did not want to make such a large commitment at her age because she did not know if she would outlive her financial assets. Interestingly, the widow that Jesus speaks of in Luke 21:1-4 knew exactly how much she had to live on. We do not know her age, but we do know that she gave one hundred percent of her financial assets. She knew doing so would immediately put her in a situation where she was then outliving her resources. But she gave anyway! If we fear that we will outlive our resources, are we not making a statement about our faith in God to care for us? Do we not trust the God whose eye is on the sparrow, who clothes the lilies of the field? Do we choose not to believe Jesus when he tells us not to worry? Do we dare take God at his word when challenged to bring the full tithe into the storehouse and see if God will provide in abundance so that we will not have need? Do we really believe that Jesus came to give us life in abundance? Or not? As you worship today and throughout this week, think about your relationship to God regarding trust. Are there areas of your life in which you need to increase your trust in God? Is your management of your finances one of them? Next Sunday, November 8, is Stewardship Commitment Sunday. Please remember to bring your completed 2016 pledge card to the service you attend. Many people today are afraid to give because they fear that they will outlive their resources.
