3 OUTREACH December, 2018 PAGE 3 I DON T WANT YOUR PRAYERS Susan Orfanos, mother of a Thousand Oaks shooting victim Following a tragedy, it seems that people extend their thoughts and prayers to victims as reflexively as saying God bless you when someone sneezes. You are in my prayers is so often said. However, how often does it actually lead to prayer? The fact is that some folks see it as hypocritical sympathy by someone who doesn t really care enough to take action to help. And so, I can understand the frustration expressed by those who are grieving the loss of their loves ones or their homes. More and more often, we hear people say, I don t want your prayers! However, these rebukes are not signs of unbelief, for I have heard people with strong faith call out for help in the face of prayer. The force of the don't pray, do something admonition often is based on the premise that prayer is doing nothing and on a general resentment toward public figures who proclaim such disingenuous platitudes without using their authority to deal with the tragedy. But let me assure you that prayer is not doing nothing. Time spent with God is never wasted. You see, prayer gives us space to grieve, to process, and to move toward actions of healing and growth from the pain we are experiencing both within ourselves and in the lives of others. Sometimes we end up reflecting on hard truths about ourselves or our world; sometimes we are filled with love, strength, and grace. In prayer, we know that God is real, God is good, God is working, and God is calling us forward. Prayer is the first step, but it is not the final step. When we pray, we assume a posture of listening. We listen for God and also listen to others with whom we are praying. As we humbly join with others in prayer, as we humbly hear their heartfelt prayers in the midst of tragedy, we become united with other believers who may pray with words different than our own. As we join with interfaith partners in calling out to God, our hearts are opened to the pain and frustrations of others and together we form a community of trust and compassion. Some of us experienced this when we prayed with our Jewish brothers and sisters last month after the shootings in Baltimore. In fact, even when we prayed together in our own worship service, we were spiritually united with our Jewish brothers and sisters who were praying to the same God in their services. Prayer is not only a means of asking God to act, it is also a means of asking God to give us opportunities to act. You see, prayer breaks open our hearts to the world and calls us to action for it is through prayer that we hear what God is calling us to do. Together, we can find clarity in the chaos around us by turning to God who is greater than our pain and anxiety. In fact, the promise that God is at work in spite of the evil in ourselves, our community, our nation, and our world empowers us to act beyond what we so often see as the limit of our ability or resources. It is through continued prayer that we are moved to give of ourselves as disciples of Christ Jesus who fully gave of himself. 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. James 2:15-17 My friends, there is nothing wrong with offering our prayers for those who are suffering. Of course, we should hold them in prayer. People are grieving the loss of their loved ones, their homes, the community, their security, their hope. These are private tragedies for which there can never be too much prayer. Together in prayer, Pastor Janet

Invite your friends to join the fun of warming the hearts of others by joyfully singing Christmas favorites. It s been a rough year in many of our lives, our nation, and our world. And so it could be difficult to roll right into the holly jolly season. Advent gives the space many of us need to stop and grieve the brokenness, disappointment, and darkness of the past year in order to be filled with the light of the Christmas miracle. Let s spend this time together to wait and rest and sing, O Come, O Come Emmanuel. December 9- Reporting from the Wilderness Where do we look for hope in our world? December 16 - Source of Light and Life Prepare for the coming of Christ by facing the fears of our dark times. December 23 - The First Christmas Carol A young woman sings a revolutionary song that speaks of hope, justice, and peace. What is the Story Behind My Favorite Christmas Carols? Have you ever wondered who wrote your favorite Christmas Carol or what inspired them to write it? Adults, join us in the Beck Room for Sunday School as we learn more about the carols we sing during Advent and Christmas. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. on December 2, and 9:45 a.m. on December 9 and 16. Approved reducing the size of the Session from 21 to 18 Elders. This process will take three years to complete Six Elders will be elected to the Classes of 2022, 2023 and A committee of elders was selected to recommend structural changes to the session necessary to continue the work of the Ministry Teams. Approved serving communion weekly at the 8:30 service. Requested the Clerk of Session write a letter to the Session of Westminster Presbyterian Church thanking them for the use of their Allen organ during the past six months. My Journey to Becoming a Session Member In the early 1980s someone called and asked me to serve on Session. I would think about it, I told them, but I already knew my answer. I was just too busy - work, reserve duty, and other things. Also, I had been volunteering at church; wasn t I doing enough? I was already over-committed and barely had time for my family. My initial thinking to decline, however, troubled me. It sometimes kept me awake at night asking God for guidance. Many special people in my life had taught me about the importance of serving one s church and community. What was I to do? Before I could give my final reply, a business trip somehow led me to a lonely West Virginia road. Radio reception disappeared miles ago, so I was left to my own thoughts. As I drove onward, I kept ruminating listing the pros and cons of serving on Session when my attention should have been on that mountain road. Somewhere in that journey, I entered the peaceful majestic setting of a sun-lit valley. There, God touched my heart and told me I could make a difference in His church. After returning home, I agreed to be on Session for the first time and a number of times since. It has been a very rewarding experience for me, and one I never regretted. I hope when you receive that call you will say, Yes. Ted McCormack

8 PAGE 8 OUTREACH December, 2018 VOICES OF JUBILEE GOSPEL CHOIR IS LAUNCHED! With deep gratitude we thank the Church and Society Ministry Team, the Session and the whole congregation for your support of the launching of Voices of Jubilee Gospel Choir at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. We have had three rehearsals and will meet twice in December to sing with the youth at BAJCC. The impact has been tremendous already. Each week we have had 24 youth and there is a waiting list for others to join. It has been an amazing experience hearing the drab room of a prison fill the voices of youth in song. We are blessed to have the gifts of an amazing choir director, Makeda McCreary and accompanist Stephen Roach who make this all possible. Into a space where home looks like this: We are bringing the joy of music and the fellowship of community. As we share our story, the support for this ministry is growing. We are thrilled to share that River Road Church, Baptist has joined the ministry as a partner providing seed money and committing to ongoing funding in East End Fellowship is our other partner providing human resources through the leadership of our directors and choir members. We are continuing to build funding support from other churches and community members. There will be a painted chair auction on Wednesday, December 5, at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Bon Air Preschool Scholarship Fund and the Voices of Jubilee Gospel Choir. We are in the process of starting a non-profit and are deeply grateful to the Virginia Repertory Theatre who is serving as our fiscal agent until we are approved. I wish I could share video or even audio to capture the blessing that is unfolding at the BAJCC. We hope we ll be able to have a performance some time in 2019 to invite congregation members and supporters to attend. Thank you for your generous support in launching this ministry! With gratitude, Rev. Lauren Ramseur, on behalf of The Voices of Jubilee Gospel Choir Team RISC Research Begins! 9 OUTREACH December, 2018 PAGE 9 Int oducing a New Worship Ser ice SABBATH CELEBRATION Sundays at 8:30 a.m. beginning on Sunday, December 9 At the very beginning of the Bible, God speaks all creation into being. Then, God creates man and woman and gives them a job description. The humans are to be fruitful and multiply and serve as stewards of the creation. However, God doesn t send them off to get to work, but takes a day to hang out with them. We often think of Sabbath as a day of rest, however biblically speaking, it is God s gift of divine present and attention. In fact, when God commanded that we remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, God wasn t commanding us to take a day off. God was commanding us to cease our activity in order to accept the gift of time with God. It is not holy to simply take a day off, we find holiness when we dwell with God. Beginning on December 9, we will offer a Sabbath Celebration at 8:30 a.m. This celebration is designed to provide the worshippers an opportunity to dwell with God. It will be a spacious worship experience that will be more quiet and peaceful than the 11:00 worship service. The scripture reading and message will be the same at both hours, however communion will be served each week during the Sabbath Celebrations. Sabbath is best experienced in community. Therefore, worshippers will gather in the first four rows of the sanctuary in order to form a more cohesive group. Upon entering the sanctuary, worshippers will be asked to remain in silence until the service begins. This will provide an opportunity for reflection and prayer in preparation for worship. Quiet music will be provided for five minutes prior to the service. Those who would like to visit with friends as they arrive at church are welcome to gather in the Garden Room. An usher will ring a bell in the hall at 8:25 in order to invite people to move into the sanctuary. Music will be an integral part of our Sabbath Celebration. Steve Henley will lead our music by playing the organ and piano. We are very pleased that Barbara Gregory will play her flute on a regular basis. Pastor Janet will play her Celtic harp periodically and a vocalist will provide a musical offering periodically. Others are welcome to talk with Steve about offering their musical gifts at a Sabbath Celebration. Worshippers will join in singing simple responses and a couple of verses of familiar songs. It is hoped that, by sitting together, the experience of singing together will be enriched. Prayer will be an important part of the Sabbath Celebration. During the Prayers of the People, worshippers will have the opportunity to share their joys and concerns as was done during the summer Worship in the Woods. Candles will be available to be lighted by those who wish to commemorate a prayer. It is our hope that the Sabbath Celebration will offer the opportunity to dwell with God. At the end of January, the worshippers will be asked about their experience in order to discern ways to make the service more meaningful. In the meantime, Pastor Janet is happy to talk with worshippers as the service develops. NOTES FROM THE TELLERS (THOSE WHO COUNT THE MONEY) 2018 Contributions: All contributions to the church for 2018 will need to be in the office by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31, to be counted for When donating to the church please use separate checks for different contributions. PRAYER FROM CAROL PIERSON, Ministry Intern As we briefly explored on November 11, we are called to offer various aspects of our lives to God every day. We practiced the following prayer may be embodied by families and individuals as part of their daily devotions. Adapted from a prayer in the Sarum Primer (1514), it may be offered while seated or standing. Directions point to heart hands on shoulders hands framing mouth fingers at eyes hands behind ears hands on top of head Words Lord be in my heart and in my loving. Lord be in my life and in my living. Lord be in my mouth and in my speaking. Lord be in my life and in my living. Lord be in my ears and in my hearing. Lord be in my mind and in my understanding. Another means of exercising those intentions is to create a drawing or small poster for one's desk, or perhaps refrigerator, of the original words: God be in my head, and in my understanding; God be in my eyes, and in my looking; God be in my mouth, and in my speaking; God be in my heart, and in my thinking; God be at my end, and at my departing. Amen." Carol Pierson
