1 Pisgah Presbyterian Church Woodford County, Kentucky November 2016 The Pisgah Post Worship God, study the Scriptures, practice the Teachings of Jesus as Lord and Savior PNC Update Did you know that Presbyterian pastors are called "teaching elders" or "ministers of the Word and Sacrament?" This position description comes directly from The Book of Order, which also tells us: "When they serve as teachers and preachers of the Word, they shall preach and teach the faith of the church, so that the people are shaped by the pattern of the gospel and strengthened for witness and service. When they serve at font and table, they shall interpret the mysteries of grace and lift the people's vision toward the hope of God's new creation. When they serve as pastors, they shall support the people in the disciplines of faith amid the struggles of daily life." These words inked in the second book of the Presbyterian Constitution serve as our guide as we invite selected pastors to visit Pisgah. We presently have two pastors scheduled to visit. Your PNC has already interviewed both pastors over the phone, visited them in their home churches, checked their references, and received approval from the pastors' home Presbytery and Transylvania Presbytery. During the pastors' visit to Pisgah, your PNC will converse over specific personal, job-related, pastoral, and theological beliefs and actions. We will listen critically as each visiting pastor shares a sermon from the Pisgah pulpit, and we will receive communion from each pastor. On your behalf, we will answer the visiting pastors' questions about Pisgah and our community. Some of the process will be formal, some informal. All of it, spirit filled. We ask for your prayers over our discernment as we seek a teaching elder for Pisgah.

3 Fellow Pisgah Family, As many members heard on October 16th during worship, the members of Session at Pisgah have agreed to an arrangement that allows me to keep my current position at Pisgah while also taking on the position of Director of Christian Education at Versailles Presbyterian. In addition, the Session at Pisgah approved a collaborative effort to combine youth groups with Versailles Presbyterian. I am grateful to the leadership of Pisgah who believe in my ability to serve both churches effectively. I want to share with you some details about my roles at both churches and how our children s ministry and youth groups are going to work. First, however, I think it is important to explain that the decision to accept the additional position at Versailles came from a place of collaboration and professional growth. Many seminary students leave their hometowns and begin working for other churches while studying. This allows them not only to have the support of their home church but also ensures that they grow as future leaders within the Presbyterian Church. The move to Versailles allows me to experience what most other seminary students experience. Fortunately for me, I live close enough to also continue to serve the church that I am a member of and that has me under its care. It is truly the best of both worlds! Rest assured, Pisgah benefits from this combined effort. Congregational members at Pisgah will teach the coordinated curriculum found and approved by the Christian Education Committee. This will allow for our children to get to know other members of the church and learn from their gifts. The combined youth group allows for friends to worship together for the first time, utilizing resources and facilities unique to each place of worship. The youth group will split time between both Pisgah and Versailles facilities. Also, look for a combined calendar of events to be published each month detailing important dates. I will split my time between churches, continuing to work my fifteen hours a week at Pisgah and adding twentyfive hours a week at Versailles. Consequently, the biggest change you will see as a result of this combined effort will be a reduction in the number of Sundays I am present in worship. Do not worry; our children and youth will still lead worship on Youth Sunday and hold events throughout the year as we always do. In fact, I look for a more robust youth and children s programming as a result of welcoming our friends at Versailles to take part in events at Pisgah. Courtney and I (and baby) are still members of Pisgah and will always consider it our home church. The Session at Pisgah will still be caring for me as a seminary student and as a candidate in the preparation for ordination within the PC(USA). Thank you all for your encouragement and support of this most important ministry. Our youth are excited and so am I! This has the makings of a beautiful partnership with our friends at Versailles Presbyterian. We are currently compiling our joint calendar and I look forward to sharing that with everyone soon. Our children s ministry is off to a great start this year! With so many gifted members at Pisgah, we are excited that these folks have stepped up and agreed to teach our curriculum: First Sunday of each month: Rotates between the three teachers Second Sunday of each month: Jennifer Chandler Third Sunday of each month: Janet Lake Fourth Sunday of each month: Christian Education Elders (Ken Ball and Kim Case) Fifth Sundays: The Pisgah Versailles Youth Group If you see any of these Pisgah people, please make sure to thank them for helping teach our children! Admin & Finance Over the past month your Administration and Finance Committee members have been working toward developing an Asking Budget for consideration by the Session in preparation of the wonderful ministries and good works of Pisgah in As we look forward to the coming year in this period of transition, we recognize how fortunate we are as a congregation to join one another in working together to accomplish our goals for the church itself and beyond the fences into our community. These good works are only possible through your generosity and support archived through your pledged commitments. So as we approach this Stewardship season, please consider how you might be able to continue to make the realities of this mission happen through the Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Additionally, I must report that at the end of October, our bookkeeper, Mrs. Blair Lee, will be leaving the church after accepting an opportunity for her talents at Arbor Youth Services. We have been blessed with Blair's comprehensive attention to the details of the church's financial needs over the past year and thank her for her incredible commitment. We further wish her well in future endeavors, and I hope you will all join me in thanking her for her guidance and assistance here at Pisgah. I am pleased to report that we have identified a new bookeeper to fulfill Blair's responsibilities in the hiring of Mr.Aaron Bennett. Aaron is an exceptionally talented individual who brings a wealth of experiences to this position and we look forward to his help and support at Pisgah.
