1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., Richmond, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: November 2011 No Longer Strangers Soon you will receive a letter inviting you to financially commit support for our church s ministries in the coming year. One member of our letter writing team was most excited about this year s process because it calls for handwritten letters to each member and friend of BAPC. In choosing to handwrite letters, the Stewardship Division signals two things, 1) the importance personal relationships play to strengthening our community of faith; 2) a sense of mutual accountability as we seek to serve as faithful disciples. I am excited about the prospect of enhancing our discipleship through generosity and the opportunity our writing teams will take in reaching out to each household. I ask each of you to prayerfully consider trying to meet the challenge the division and your personal correspondent shares with you. As you consider, here are some comments others have written on generous giving: Through charity toward God, we conceive virtues, and through charity toward our neighbors, they are brought to birth. Catherine of Sienna Our greatest need and our most difficult achievement is to find meaning in our lives. Bruno Bettelheim Charity brings to life again those who are spiritually dead. Thomas Aquinas Charity: to love human beings as God does. Simone Weil What you are is God s gift to you, and what you do with it is your gift to God. George Foster If you haven t got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble. Bob Hope Giving never moves in a straight line it always moves in circles! It goes round and round and round. Robert Schuller The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it. Psalm 24:1 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 Shalom, Gordon Inside this month... The CARITAS Furniture Bank operates Virginia s only furniture bank and provides home starter packages to 700 households per year in partnerships with more than 50 nonprofit agencies. Sharon Drescher, who spoke at BAPC with her own story of homelessness and is now Volunteer Development Administrator for the Furniture Bank, has asked for help with a household items drive. The Church and Society Division invites you to contribute items that Ms. Drescher says are seriously needed for families in housing crisis. We will collect contributions at the church from October 30 through November 13. Items may be left at the church for storage until the end of the drive when they will be picked up by Caritas. The following gently used items are needed: bed linens, towels, washcloths, dishes, flatware, pots, pans, lamps, pillows, small appliances and cleaning supplies (buckets, brooms, mops, paper towels, multi-purpose cleaners.) Toys, books and baby items cannot be accepted. Items need to be turned in by Sunday, December 4. There is a drop off box in the office lobby. PNC UPDATE The PNC would like to thank everyone who completed the survey. We received 162 responses! We very much appreciate the time and thought put into each survey response. We are now compiling the data and will use the results to guide us in completing the Church Information Form that both describes our church to prospective pastors and specifies some criteria about the type of pastor we desire. In addition to our updates in the Outreach, you can follow our progress online at the Bonairpc.org web site under PNC Updates. Donations may be made on Sundays, October 30, November 6 or 13, Wednesday nights before Wednesday Night Dinner, November 2 and 9, and on weekdays during office hours. Tax receipts will be available. Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) will share more than $3.7 million with food banks, pantries, community gardens, and other local efforts nationwide. Together we can each make a difference in the lives of people all over the world suffering from hunger and poverty by raising money and walking in solidarity with people who have to walk every day just to survive. In the Richmond CROP Hunger Walk over 200 people participate, and this is your chance to come out and enjoy the afternoon and get some exercise while helping to eliminate hunger. After each worship service on November 6, BAPC Youth will collect donations. If you have any questions or would like to participate please contact Shawn Thomas Smith stsmith@bonairpc.org. COMMITMENT SUNDAY NOVEMBER 13 This is an important date when members and friends of Bon Air Presbyterian Church will pledge their gifts to further God s work and ministry. The reason for giving is not to pay the Church s bills. The reason for giving is to achieve the goal of substantial, inner, spiritual growth and a sense of deep satisfaction. St. Francis of Assisi said, It is in the giving that we receive. We have all experienced the depth and value of our Church s ministries, programs, and services to people. Our combined gifts make all that possible. Thank you for prayerfully considering your gift and for attending worship on November 13.
6 PAGE 6 OUTREACH November 2011 Kid s Kingdom in WORM Shepherds and Angels It happened that the Roman emperor, Augustus, gave orders for the names of all the people to be listed in record books. Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed. So Joseph had to leave Nazareth in Galilee and go to Bethlehem in Judea. Long ago Bethlehem had been King David's hometown, and Joseph went there because he was a descendent of David. Mary was engaged to marry Joseph and traveled with him to Bethlehem. She was soon going to have a baby, and while they were there, she gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped him in cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. On the night when Jesus was born, some shepherds were in the countryside nearby watching over their sheep. Suddenly they saw an angel standing in front of them, and they were terrified. The angel said, Don t be afraid. I ve got good news that will bring great joy to all the people. A baby has been born in Bethlehem, and he s your savior, the Messiah, the Lord. You can find him wrapped up tight in cloth and lying in a manger. Suddenly a crowd of angels appeared, praising God and saying Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace. After the angels left, the shepherds decided to go and see for themselves what the angel was talking about. So they went to Bethlehem and found Mary, Joseph, and the baby. Afterwards they went back, praising God and telling everybody what they had seen and heard, and people were amazed at the story. But Mary kept quiet, and thought and wondered about everything that had happened. Memory Verse: Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people. Luke 2:10 What we will learn: God sent Jesus because God loves us. God cares equally for all people. God communicates with people in different ways. We can learn from the shepherds about how to respond to God. What is happening in Workshops? 1. Holywood: Watch Christmas Is and learn the importance of the shepherds in spreading the news of Jesus birth. 2. Apostle s Arcade: Play a game to remember the story of the shepherds and angels. 3. Noah s Art: make a 3-D shepherd or angel. 4. Burning Bush Café: Make cookies to eat and to share with someone special. 5. Music and Movement: Learn how God used shepherds and angels to communicate with people. Family Time and Prayer Read: Luke 2:1-20; Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1: Reflection: Think about how you would feel if an angel appeared to you and asked you to spread the word about Jesus. Prayer: Thank you, God, for the gift of Jesus, for the angels and shepherds who shared the good news, and for all the people who bring the message of God s love to us today. Amen.
