2 2017 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FALL Classes STARTING AUGUST 16 At First Church we believe that growing and learning is a lifelong process. In order for us to be challenged in faith, grow in our understanding of the Bible, and become followers of Christ, we invite everyone to actively engage themselves in the Christian Education opportunities we offer. Make yourself familiar with the key below to better understand the session dates, format, type, and additional info for each class. All classes meet weekly during the session unless otherwise noted. Participants are welcome to join a class even after the start date. While registration for classes is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Please use the provided form to register and return to the church office. Registration forms are also available online. This class will offer interactive discussions of the Bible and various topics of the Christian faith. NEW - Young Adult 9:30am The Wright Place, Great Hall A class is for young adults who are looking for a Sunday morning group experience. This is a class for people who want to learn more about the Bible and discuss faith issues. GriefShare Starts September 10 5:45pm Perry Home Parlor If you ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, this group can help you through this challenging time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you ve never faced before. Led by John Griffin. An Introduction to Christian Worship 6:00pm Main Sanctuary An Introduction to Christian Worship, offered as part of our focus on Worship in 2017, will provide an in-depth look at how and why we worship the way we do. Using the book An Introduction to Christian Worship by James F. White, the class will include discussion on the history of worship, how time and space impact our worship, church music, sacraments, specials seasons, and more. Led by Jeb Hunt. MONDAYS Faith and Fitness 5:30pm Front Lawn A fitness and accountability group which focuses on strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and core exercises. Led by Denise Van Atta. Revelation 6:00pm Perry Home, Parlor This in-depth study will cover the entire Book of Revelation. The class will also discuss issues in the Greco-Roman World during the time Revelation was written and discuss the meaning of prophets and prophecy in the Bible. The class will be hosted by Monday Night Bible Class. Led by Rev. Brandon Bures.
3 MONDAYS CONT. Entering the Life of the Saints 6:00pm Perry Home, Room 201 This nine week class will explore more deeply the lives of seven saints. By examining their holy habits and spiritual disciplines we will discern if there is an invitation for us to grow in our spiritual practice in the example of their lives and ministries. We will practice in community a holy habit or spiritual discipline from one of the saints each week. Led by Donell Seager & David Boyd. TUESDAYS Lunch Bunch Group t 4th Tuesday 11:45am Perry Home, Coffee House This study and information group is sponsored by the United Methodist Women and participates in a variety of studies led by various speakers. A previous study included the book An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch or snack to share with the group. Led by Nettie Joseph. WEDNESDAYS Joe Harrell Men s Bible Study Starts September 6 7:00am The Wright Place The Joe Harrell Men s Bible study gathers for breakfast, followed by a devotion and presentation on a variety of topics. The Bible Breakfast has continually met for 40+ years and is always looking for new members. Led by Mike Vance. Dad s Bible Study 7:30am Panera Bread All dads are invited for a time of Bible study and Christian fellowship with other dads. This study meets at Panera Bread by Cordova Mall. Led by Bill Bond. Women at the Well t 10:30am Perry Home, Parlor This book and Bible-based discussion group for women of all ages studies a variety of topics throughout the year. Led by Cindy Smith. Bible with Brandon Starts September 6 Noon The Wright Place Rev. Brandon Bures, Associate Pastor, leads participants in a weekly in-depth discussion of the upcoming lectionary passages for Sunday. Lunch is available for purchase. Led by Rev. Brandon Bures. Senior Pastor s Bible Study Starts September 6 6:00pm Wesley Abbey Join Senior Pastor, Wesley H. Wachob, as he leads a study of Paul and Elizabeth Achtemeier s book: The Old Testament Roots of Our Faith. Come study how the Lordship of Jesus is frimly rooted in the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament. Led By Senior Pastor, Wesley H. Wachob. Financial Peace University Starts September 6 6:00pm Lower Sanctuary, S117 Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University presents this nine week class focusing on Biblical steps to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely and more! And yet family shapes us more than almost anything in the world. Join us for a sermon series by Rev. Paul Rasmussen as he takes us through several topics on the family including the purpose of the family, boundaries, problem with blame, etc. Each week we will watch the sermon together, have a brief discussion and spend time in prayer for our families. Simply Christian 6:00pm Perry Home, PH101 A practical guide for parents who want to connect and grow this class is for anyone who wants to travel beyond the controversies that obscure what the Christian faith really stands for and is interested in walking through the Christian faith step-by-step. Led by Brandon Bures. Bible Talk 6:00pm Perry Home, Parlor This class is for people who want to learn more about what the Bible says about different topics. Bring your questions and participate in some interesting discussions. Led by Bill Bond. THURSDAYS Mom's Bible Study 9:30am Education Building, E207 All moms are invited to join us for our weekly Moms Bible Study. 5 NEXT COMMUNITY GROUP LAUNCH SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 WHAT IS A COMMUNITY GROUP? Community Groups are intimate groups that commit to meet and connect with each other during the week. They encourage one another to grow in their understanding of the Gospel as they live out their faith. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM CLASSES & STUDIES? Community Groups are intended to foster deeper relationships with God and group members, which encourages greater transparency, transformation, and accountability during and outside group time. INTERESTED? Fill out the attached registration form and check the box(s) indicating which type of group you are interested in or write in a specific open group listed below. OPEN COMMUNITY GROUPS The groups listed below are currently meeting and open to new members. Young Professionals This community group is made up of young people in their 20-30's. The Young Professionals meet every other week at a restaurant to fellowship and discuss life circumstances, biblical topics, and current events. Parents of Young Children This tight knit community is tailored to parents of children between birth and elementary school. However, topics of study are not only focused on parenting, but also involve Biblical study and fellowship. Married Couples This group of married couples in their 50's-60's meets weekly to fellowship, share, and discuss. The last study they read was Tim Tebow's book: Shaken. Intergenerational - Compassionate Friends Compassionate Friends is a community group for every age and every circumstance. Prayer Shawl Ministry Our longest running community group, the prayer shawl ministry combines knitting with prayer to craft wonderful shawls that are distributed to those hurting or in need. PROPOSED COMMUNITY GROUPS The groups listed below are not currently meeting, but suggested communities based on life stages and circumstance. Groups will form based on interest. Parents of Children A group designed for parents of elementary aged children who are looking to grow together in parenting and spirituality. Parents of Tweens A community aimed to meet the need of parents of middle school children. This community group will walk together through the difficulties and joys of raising budding teens. Parents of Youth This group is focused on parents of high-schoolers and offers a space to process your child's transition to college. CareGivers Designed specifically for those caring for others, this community group provides a space to share struggles, support burdens, and rest. Women - Intergenerational The perfect group for women looking to grow and learn with other women who may not be their age. This group has met every other week and studied a variety of books and topics. Don't forget to fill out a registration form and return it to the Church Office. Forms are also available online. SIGN ME UP! Women - 20s-30s This community group is for those seeking to deepen their faith, but also to cultivate meaningful and lasting relationships with other young women. GriefShare This sacred space is for those looking to walk alongside others in a similar season of grief.
6 SUNDAY SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES 9:30-10:30am In addition to our seasonal classes, First Church offers a variety of Sunday School classes year round for all ages and interests. Adult Bible Study Perry Home, 2nd Floor, PH209 Bible study for adults of all ages using the Adult Bible Series published by Cokesbury. Great fun and fellowship. Bonding with the Bible Lower Sanctuary, Joe Harrell Library Bill Bond leads Bible study of various books of the Bible. Christian Families Lower Sanctuary, S117 Multi-age group of couples and singles whose classes include Bible study, guest speakers from First Church and the community, as well as member-led discussions. Many members participate in local outreach ministries through First Church. Duell/Lipscomb Lower Sanctuary, S106 Proactive class for adults 50 and over using Bible based literature to study social concerns. Home Improvement Perry Home, 201 A thriving group of young parents who meet to study the Bible and put what they learn into action. New Life Wright Place, 2nd Floor, WP233 A vibrant group of adults 50 and over who study a variety of topics with great leaders and much discussion. Visitors and new members are welcome on Sunday mornings and to their monthly socials. Open Minds, Open Hearts Wright Place, 2nd Floor, WP206 Rich Bible-based sessions plus Christian fellowship outside of class.(class doesn t meet during the summer) Side by Side Wright Place, 2nd Floor, WP204 Parents of children in Sunday School who learn their children s next week lesson in order to have significant conversations after their child s experience of lesson. Soul Feast Wright Place, 2nd Floor, WP202 Interactive, Bible based covenant group facilitated by class members. Open discussion using a variety of materials. Spiritual Discoveries Lower Sanctuary, S118 Bible study for adults of all ages.
