When you have entered the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, 2 take some of the first fruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name 3 and say to the priest in office at the time, I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come to the land the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us. Deut. 26:1-3

Dear BAPC members, My dad, Warren Vaughan, my sister, Lesley Gallaher, and I are humbled and would like express our gratitude for all of the thoughts, prayers, cards, visits, and food that came my mother's, Anna Mae Vaughan, way during her long illness. The cards and visits lifted up her spirits!! We are also grateful for the gracious reception after her funeral and the sharing of all of the stories of her wit and gentle Southern charm. BAPC is a wonderful community to be a part of. Sincerely, Lorna Anzelone As many of you know my brothers and I recently completed a bike ride from Pittsburgh to Washington DC to raise money to fight Parkinson's Disease. Our goal was $10,000. We were stuck at $5,000. Then my BAPC church family kicked it in to high gear and before the end of our trip we raised over $10,000 and have currently raised over $11,000 to fight this disease. Thank you so much for your support! We could not have done it without you! I am very thankful to be part of such a kind and caring community!! 3 OUTREACH October, 2018 PAGE 3 LOOK HOW FAR WE HAVE COME! During the past year, we have followed God s lead as we have stepped into the future of the life of our church with just a simple map and no guarantees. We have sought God s guidance as we made plans for our congregation and our church facility. There has been a strong sense that the Lord is calling us to revitalize and to become more than we are now. We had been waiting and delaying for several years and the time has come to trust enough to take a big step forward. And so, we entered a season of discernment as we sought God s lead in our attempts to move toward the vision God has for our congregation. We prayed and we held focus group meetings. We prayed and we completed feasibility studies. We prayed and we talked with various architect firms and general contractors. We prayed as we sought God s guidance for who would be the most faithful professional and church leaders for this journey toward becoming. We prayed and we developed plans for our new Welcome Corridor. We prayed and we conducted a successful capital campaign. We prayed as we secured a construction loan through Presbyterian Investment and Loan Program. We prayed as we formed a corporation, developed financial plans, and signed contracts. We have continued to pray as the construction moves toward completion. Through our prayers, we have been guided and we have been blessed. Church members have stepped forward to lead us throughout this journey. Others have worked behind the scenes, developing plans, conducting campaigns, running wire, setting up the Fellowship Hall worship space, organizing and leading Worship in the Woods, moving, painting, and so much more. We have been blessed by the financial generosity of our members and by the generous contributions of time, talents, and supplies of professionals and contractors. By following God s lead, by taking the risk to move outside our comfort zone, we are beginning to catch a glimpse of our fresh new beginning. We may not know exactly how it will all unfold, but we trust that as we follow God s lead, one step at a time, we will be on the right path toward God s vision for our congregation. We will be blessed and we will be a blessing. This year, our stewardship campaign theme is Let God Lead as Y ou Gather and Give. Everyone is encouraged to attend the First Fruits and Cheese Reception following each worship service on September 30. This is the day that we will begin a church-wide season of discernment. Our worship theme will be Let God Lead You in Prayer. At the reception following worship, you will receive a devotional journal and have the opportunity to experience centering prayer. As Jesus would take time away from the crowds to pray and listen to God, our members and friends are encouraged to take time away from the busyness of their lives to prayerfully reflect on life, service, and generosity. We enter this season confident in the power of prayer. When we all join together in prayerful discernment, the power of the Holy Spirit will guide, challenge, and empower us to mission, ministry, and a future beyond our imagining and beyond anything we could possibly do on our own. Join us. Catch the excitement. Experience the enthusiasm as we follow the leading of the Lord, en-theos, in God. I thank God for this beloved and faithful family of faith. Pastor Janet

5 OUTREACH October, 2018 PAGE 5 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Preschool completed in time to open on time! We are so pleased that the Bon Air Presbyterian Preschool opened for the fall semester on time, fresh and new for the incoming students and their families. The renovations included: asbestos removal and new bathrooms, ceilings, lighting, carpeting, paint, and heating and air conditioning. It took the dedication and hard work of our Preschool Director, Jennifer Smouse, along with the contractors, movers, teachers, the church building utilization committee, and so many of our members who pitched in to get the job done. Now the focus is on completing our new Welcome Corridor. The contractors are making good progress. Our interior designer assisted us in choosing and ordering the furniture and paint colors for the walls. Church members are hard at work painting the walls in the main hallway of the Education Wing, the Fellowship Hall foyer, and the Narthex. Good news! We are still well within our budget. We hope to complete the construction in late October. Then, we will spend time moving the stored items out of the Sanctuary and into the permanent storage spaces. We will move back into the Parlor and set up the new Church Office, Welcome Center, Workroom, and Nursery. As the new furniture arrives, we will move into our new Garden Room and spacious new office foyer. We hope to be worshiping in our sanctuary sometime at the beginning of November. The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee will be presenting a progress report at a congregational meeting on Sunday, October 7, in the Fellowship Hall, following the worship service. Welcome Carol Pierson Hello! My name is Carol Pierson. I am grateful to spend time with you as a Union Presbyterian Seminary Christian education intern, with a focus on adult education. I grew up in Jonesborough, TN, which is the oldest town in Tennessee as well as the home of the International Storytelling Festival. My parents and extended family still reside in that area, which remains a special place to me. I am a graduate of Union Presbyterian Seminary (MDIV), Emmanuel School of Religion (MAR), and Milligan College (BS). A minister of Word & Sacrament, I am a member of Whitewater Valley Presbytery. As I approach my seventh year in ordained ministry, I will be committing the next nine-months to earn a Master of Arts in Christian Education on the seminary s residential campus. I look forward to meeting you.

There will be carpools from church. Minister of the Month Bill Perko At Bill Perko s funeral service, we sang Here I Am Lord which was the perfect song to describe Bill s life. Bill was the man who always was there standing by and ready to help out. He was thorough and thoughtful in everything he did. Last June, Bill was installed as an active elder and served on the Church and Society Ministry Team. During the past few months, Bill coordinated and monitored our asbestos removal, served on the team that worked on the renovation IT issues, and was a member of the team that met with the contractors and architect for bi-monthly progress reports. He had just stepped forward to moderate the Nominating Committee, join the RISC Team, and serve as a Micah Mentor. Bill also helped many of us in other small and important ways. Bill s sudden and unexpected death shocked all who knew him and served with him. He was a good man with a big heart. He listened intently and put the needs of others first. Bill was a man of God, a model of faithful discipleship, who continues to inspire us to lives of compassion and service. Sunday, November 4-1-3:00 p.m. Gleaning at Gallmeyer Farm (High School Youth)

9 OUTREACH October, 2018 PAGE 9 Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry at BAPC, currently part of the Congregational Care Ministry Team, began in We had five or six knitters but we worked hard to knit enough shawls to be able to distribute them to members of our congregation who were confined to their home. We also gave them to members who were sick, grieving or having surgery and later expanded to make baby blankets for babies born to members of the church. Bells & Chimes The 36 Malmark Handbells and 24 Malmark Handchimes have been completely refurbished at the Malmark factory this summer. We love our bells and chimes, and pray that now, and for generations to come these bells and chimes will continue to be used to the glory of God and the blessing of God s people. We thank Tina Homewood whose generous memorial gift has allowed us to have this work done. Several years later, we joined a group called Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers and sent some of our shawls to family members of soldiers who had lost their lives in service to our country. That program eventually folded and we began sending shawls to Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center here in Richmond. The mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is to have our prayer shawl recipients feel the comfort of being wrapped in the prayers of others during difficult times in their lives. As the shawls are being made, we pray for the recipients and then hold a dedication service to allow the congregation to offer their prayers before the shawls go out to those in need. In addition to the shawl, each recipient receives a prayer card with an appropriate prayer printed on it. To date, we have given almost 200 prayer shawls to BAPC members, family and close friends. Approximately 20 shawls were sent to Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers and about 15 to the VA Medical Center. This ministry has been a blessing to many and would not be possible without the dedication of those who put their time and energy into making these beautiful shawls. If you are interested in knitting or crocheting for this ministry, please contact Cathy McCormack at tcmccormack@verizon.net. or Prime Time Circle will meet on Monday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to hear Dr. Mary Mikhael speaking about the refugee and humanitarian crisis in Syria. Prime Time Circle and Church & Society Division are sponsoring our speaker. Don t forget to sign up to bring a refreshment at Sisters Circle will meet on Tuesday, October 9, at 10:30 a.m. in room 403. Please read chapter 2 God s Promise, I Am With You. We are looking ahead to the completion of construction. Please join us for a Celebratory Open House! The first Sunday back in the sanctuary we will gather after both services in our new Welcome Corridor to tour the area and enjoy some snacks in our new space! Stop by on your way out of worship and stay at your leisure, walking through and admiring our new facility, and socializing with your church family. What a joyous occasion it will be!

10 PAGE 10 OUTREACH October, 2018 Peace and Global Witness Offering - October 7 The Church and Society Ministry team has selected the Central Virginia Sanctuary Congregation Network as the recipient of BAPC s 25% portion of the Peace and Global Witness offering which will be collected on October 7. The Peace and Global Witness Offering, one of the PCUSA s Denominational Offerings, promotes the peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize 25% of this Offering to benefit global peace efforts, local councils will utilize 25% for local ministries of peace and reconciliation, and the remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice around the world. The Central Virginia Sanctuary Congregation Network, established by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, provides support and solidarity to our neighbors who fear deportation or detainment. BAPC s Church and Society Ministry team feels this group is a deserving recipient of our support and encouragement. Please consider your own generous support for this PCUSA Denominational Offering to promote peace and reconciliation in our community and around the world. International Peacemaker Visiting Bon Air Presbyterian Church (BAPC) On October 1 at 7:00 p.m. BAPC will be hosting International Peacemaker Dr. Mary Mikhael. Dr. Mikhael, a native of Syria, who will be discussing the massive humanitarian crisis being faced in Syria and the challenges religious groups face as they seek to bring peace and reconciliation to this region. As our denomination celebrates efforts that promote justice and global peace, this is a unique opportunity to hear a firsthand account of what is happening in Syria. Supported through the Peace and Global Witness offering, the Presbyterian Mission Agency s Peacemaking Program makes it possible for peacekeepers to visit the PCUSA each year to interpret issues of peace and justice. By visiting and sharing stories of their work and witness, the peacemakers help us understand peace and justice concerns around the world while providing insights that can inspire us to greater faithfulness. Please bring a friend or neighbor and join us on October 1 at 7:00 p.m. to welcome Dr. Mikhael, and to hear her speak on her experiences in Syria. Also, please consider a contribution to the Peace and Global Witness Offering which provides much needed support of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, which makes this sort of visit possible.
