1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., Richmond, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: January 2012 No Longer Strangers The New year always brings an opportunity for reflection on the past and hope-filled considerations for the future. Baptist turned Episcopalian John Claypool shared a story about how to look to the past: Years ago a thunderstorm swept through southern Kentucky at the farm where my Claypool forbears have lived for six generations. In the orchard, the wind blew over an old pear tree that had been there as long as anybody could remember. My grandfather was grieved to lose the tree on which he had climbed as a boy and whose fruit he had eaten all his life. A neighbor came by and said, Doc, I m really sorry to see your pear tree blown down. I m sorry too, said my grandfather. It was a real part of my past. What are you going to do? the neighbor asked. My grandfather paused for a moment and then said, I m going to pick the fruit and burn what s left. That s a pretty wise way to deal with many things in our past. A healthy journey into the New Year is to learn the lessons of the past, enjoy their pleasures, and then go on with the present and forward into the future. Sometimes that means pulling out the scrapbook to enjoy what was. At other times, it just might mean burning up what could be a millstone around the neck. Dear friends: Thank you so much for the many cards we have received upon my mother s recent death. As she regularly visited us prior to her declining health, many of you had known her. It is truly a blessing to share in prayers of comfort and hope with Christian brothers and sisters, especially at death. Do know that although we are (appropriately) absent and geographically distant, you all remain close to us in our hearts. May God s blessings continue to abound for you individually and as a congregation in the coming new year. Charles and Ruthie Grant I would like to thank all of the people who sent cards of sympathy after my brother s death on Dec. 9th. He was in very poor health and is in a better place with GOD now. We will miss him but that is God's plan for us all someday. Sincerely, Garth Nelson Dear Bon Air friends, What a blessing it is to be a part of such a caring family! 3 OUTREACH January 2012 PAGE 3 Opportunities to Serve Christ.to Make a Difference CARITAS January 14 21, 2012 A roof and a bed is what it is all about. Pretty simple. CARITAS represents the idea that the combined efforts of many people can provide a roof over the heads of those who need it most. CARITAS is the largest and most inclusive shelter in Richmond. In addition, CARITAS offers support and guidance with full time case workers who work with each willing client to take the necessary financial, legal, medical, and emotional steps toward self-sufficiency. A roof and a bed. A pretty simple task that offers many opportunities to serve. Everyone can find a way to help. We need people to prepare and serve evening meals; prepare bag lunches; serve as evening hosts and runners; stay overnight; set up cots for the arrival of our guests; breakdown cots when our guests leave; and wash laundry, which is a big need. If you can wash and dry laundry at your home, but cannot pick it up or deliver it back to the church, call me. I will make arrangements. Your financial support of this vital project is always welcome. Freedom House Volunteers Needed for 2012 BAPC has prepared casseroles for Freedom House for many years. We are looking to add some volunteers to the program. We especially need a few more volunteers to prepare casseroles. All you have to do is pick up a pan and recipe from the church once every other month, prepare the casserole at home and return it to the church uncooked. It s that easy! If you can boil water and use a can opener, you are qualified for the job. If you feel called to serve in this way, please contact Alisha Gallini at awgallini@aol.com or Sign up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board. Have an idea for our guests visit? Let me know. I would love to hear from you. Thanks. Henry Jacocks, Date Change for Coffee Sale Fairly Traded/Equal Exchange Coffee, Tea and Chocolate will be sold on the second Sunday in January because of the New Year's Holiday. We ll be set up for sales in the office lobby between the early worship service and the late service and again after the 11:00 service. We have a complete selection of coffee and tea and a great array of chocolates to satisfy your need for sweets. The Peace/Study Action Group and the Church & Society Division thank you for your continued support of this ministry. The Souper Bowl of Caring is coming up on February 5 and the youth of BAPC are once again joining with other groups and organizations around the country to make a positive impact by collecting money and food donations on Super Bowl weekend. The Souper Bowl of Caring is the largest youth led weekend of giving and serving, but we need your help to make it happen. The youth will be outside the sanctuary on February 5 collecting non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations. Let s all make this year s Souper Bowl a huge success by giving to those who can really use the Caring that comes from this congregation.

You know one of those amazing moments when an extraordinary musical experience happens in worship. Every once in awhile the performance of an inspired piece, whether it be old or new, connects the text with the musicians, choir, clergy, building, and the congregation in such a phenomenal way, as if all that is good and true in the universe is in cosmic alignment. For whatever reason, each person involved is united in the mission of that particular musical offering. Somehow egos have been put aside, the composer s whisperings are in the air, and the Spirit has brought the music to a more profound place then ever thought possible. At the end of the experience, everyone knows that they have been transported to a different level in place and time. Those listening may be in tears; those performing shaken to the core of their being. What exactly has happened? Rev. Dr. Victoria Sirota in her book Preaching to the Choir says the following: Maybe the best way to describe the experience is that we have been where heaven and earth meet. This is a thin place at the edge of the reality the world would claim as the only truth, where we suddenly glimpse reality or, perhaps, infinitude. Some have said that it is here that we are able, however brief the moment may be, we are able to see the heart of God. And finally, music is here to teach us how the most wonderful things in life cannot be put into words, but need some universal voice through which emotions and imagination can find and expression to which mere words are unequal. Music means much because it emancipates the imagination, furnishes a voice to the emotions, releases us from the commonplace, and bears us out. Where for a little while our entranced spirits are at home in the infinite, and there we find solace and peace. The above is an excerpt from a message by Steve Henley for the Church Music Leadership Conference at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Richmond, VA on June 19, 2010 ROMEO s meet--- January 10 The ROMEOs next gathering is at noon on Tuesday, January 10 at Angelo s.

6 PAGE 6 OUTREACH January 2012 Kid s Kingdom in WORM Mary & Martha Jesus and his disciples were traveling and they came to the village where Jesus friends Mary and Martha lived. Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and got busy cooking and taking care of the guests. Meanwhile, her sister Mary sat down in front of Jesus and listened to everything he said. Martha was worried about all the work that had to be done and irritated that Mary wasn t helping. Finally, she went to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn't it bother you that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!" Jesus answered, "Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her." Memory Verse: Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God. What we will learn: Don t worry about little things. Jesus wants us to listen to God. God wants us to be considerate, patient, loving, and kind. Do the best you can and don t worry about what others are doing. God wants us to get ready for Jesus. What is happening in Workshops? 1. Apostle s Arcade: Play a game focusing on choices we make. 2. Noah s Art: Create symbols of Mary or Martha using clay. 3. Disciple Drama: Experience the story of Mary and Martha using charades, drama, and pantomime. 4. Praising Puppets: Focus on the attitudes of Mary and Martha through puppet expressions. Family Time and Prayer Read: Luke 10:38-42 Reflection: How were Mary and Martha different when serving Jesus? What can we learn from listening to Jesus messages? Prayer: Thank you God for our hands and ears and for the stories in the Bible that teach us so much about the love of God and Jesus. Amen.
7 OUTREACH January 2012 PAGE 7 Montreat Youth Conference 2012 Week V July As we come together as a community of faith in this sacred place, we realize that we indeed are Perfectly Imperfect. During the conference, we will focus on the God who accepts us just as we are. While we have fun with friends, we will celebrate God through meaningful, creative and interactive worship and be inspired and challenged to affirm and deepen our Christian identity. A Youth Conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. If you have not experienced this transformational experience, ask someone who has, or take a leap of faith and join in an experience you will never forget. Registrations forms are outside Shawn Thomas office. Form and $100 Deposit is due January 14. Massanetta Spring Middle School Conference 2012 Vivid and Visible Session 2 June To sing this little light of mine reminds us of childhood of a song calling us to hold high our small little finger lights all around our neighborhoods, on top of a bushel basket, and so high that Satan won t phew them out. Years pass, and the little light is crowded, dimmed, maybe even snuffed out by a world full of constant, glaring, blinking lights, or maybe by indifference and busyness. So, how do we be lights that are healthy, bold, full of grace, vivid and fully visible? Lights shining so brightly for Jesus Christ that nothing could ever blow them out?! The 2012 Middle School Conference will be a city on the hill, seeking ways to answer this question. We will also seek to ignite youth and adults so that by summer s end, the world will see this little light of ours vivid and visible for a world that longs for the light. Registration forms are outside Shawn Thomas office. Form and $100 Deposit is due January 14. Date High School Youth Fellowship Time Activity Dinner Jan 8 4:00-6:00 Members Concert and H.C. Filmmaker Josh Fox learned his home was on top of a rock formation containing natural gas. He was offered $100,000 to lease his land for a new method of drilling developed by Halliburton and soon discovered this was only a part of a 34-state drilling campaign, the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history. Part mystery and part travelogue, Gasland documents Fox s cross-country odyssey to find out if the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - is actually safe. A gift was given to the Memorial Fund in honor of Mike & Jane Wall by Elizabeth Goode. A gift was given to the Memorial Fund in memory of Jessie Duke (Jackie Nelson s mother) and Page Nelson (brother of Garth Nelson) by AYCO Charitable Foundation. This grant was recommended by Anne and Henry Savedge.
9 OUTREACH January 2012 PAGE 9 Adult Education at BAPC The Feasting on the Word Curriculum adapts adapting the Feasting on the Word commentary approaches to study of one of the lectionary passages in ways suitable for all participants. The Curriculum and the Commentary streams are related this way. What? (Exegetical). Basic information about backgrounds and meanings of biblical passages are essential to understanding. This stream asks What? are the important things to know about the contexts, language, and settings of the biblical passage. Where? (Theological) To understand the meanings of passages, we also need to ask Where? Where is God in this passage? Where are God s will and activities being expressed? Theological questions about where God s word comes to us in the passage are significant. So What? (Pastoral) The implication of the passage for our Christian lives makes the biblical passage come alive. We ask, So what? What does this passage mean to me? What does it mean for my relationship with God and other people? Now What? (Homiletical) Biblical passage shapes our understandings and lives in the church. They connect us with needs in God s world. So we ask, Now what? This prompts us to reflect on how our life and the church s life can live out what the passage is saying. Common Theological Questions (January) Whether the questions come from those outside our faith, those within our faith, or even ourselves, it is guaranteed that at some point in our faith life we will be asked questions about the theological concepts of our faith. And we don't need to be theological scholars to understand these concepts. Using these studies, participants will even be able to tackle questions like: Who is God? What happens when we sin? Is there life after death? What They Saw (February) Sometimes the stories of the Bible become so familiar to us that we begin to miss their subtle nuances. This six-session Bible study offers a playful and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of the Bible by presenting them through the perspective of another biblical character present at the time. Through these studies, participants are given a firsthand opportunity to imagine what it must have been like to witness numerous events in the Bible through the eyes of one who was there.
