1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., Richmond, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: May 2010 From our Pastor... Farewell Since announcing three weeks ago that I was leaving BAPC after 16 years of shared ministry, Ruthie and I have been blessed and overwhelmed by the cards and notes from so many of you. It is so affirming to us to be reminded of the deep bonds of affection and respect that unite us with one another. That affection and those bonds will carry us forward in my new call, and will be with us always, wherever God s calling leads us. We look forward to a joyous celebration of our life together on Sunday (May 2). I am delighted that our last worship together will be sealed with the Sacrament of Holy Communion and cemented by our fellowship afterwards. Although you will always hold a dear place in our hearts, our relationship will change. I will no longer be your pastor. I will join the ranks of my predecessors and become your former pastor. As your former pastor, I will no longer be engaged in your ongoing life and ministry. I will not conduct your memorial services, baptisms, or weddings. Those important events will be conducted by your associate pastor and/or your interim pastor, and eventually your next pastor. I will best honor you, BAPC, and your pastoral leadership by encouraging you to turn to your called pastors for your pastoral counsel and ministry. The movers are coming to pack our belongings on Monday (May 3) and load the truck the next day. We anticipate moving into the church-owned manse in Bryn Mawr on Thursday, May 6, after which our addresses will be Ruthie and Charles Grant R. 3 OUTREACH May 2010 PAGE 3 Discipleship Opportunities Pentecost Offering May 23 You will be asked to give to the Pentecost Offering which is traditionally received on the day of Pentecost, May 23, It provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Our congregation will keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in our community. The General Assembly s portion (60 percent) provides leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised over $7 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God s family. BAPC Endowment Fund Have you remembered your church in your will? Habitat for Humanity BAPC will participate in building a Habitat for Humanity house in July as one of eleven churches in the Apostle Build program. We are assigned to work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, July 27, 28, 29 and 31. Save those dates and look for more information in the June Outreach. If you know now that you will be able to assist during those days or if you would like more information, call Harold Greer ( ). MS Walk For quite a few years a small group of church members have walked in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk each spring as team BAPC Cares. The Central Virginia MS Society Chapter changed the date of The Walk this year and it will be held on May 1 st. Unfortunately, our team members are either going to be out of town or have other commitments on that date and won t be able to participate. However, two team members, Martha Singdahlsen and Barb Nehls, have decided to be virtual walkers and will walk in cyberspace this year. As always, we walk in honor of Jane Wall and any other church members, family and friends who are suffering with this dreaded disease. We also participate in loving memory of Andrea Loth, Bill Cavin and Don Singdahlsen. We hope that many of you will support us as you have in the past. Your donations will help in the research that will find a cure for MS one day. You can make your donation on line by going to Click on Walk Richmond in the middle of the page. Then click on Donate to a Walker where it asks for a name, enter either Martha or Barb s names click on search for a participant and the name will show up in red further down the page click on the name and it will take you to the donations page where you can enter your donation. May 30 Memorial Day Weekend No Youth June 6 4:30-6:00 PYC Picnic (Potluck) Denise Clements and Jill Conley 1800 Upperbury Drive Midlothian, VA Kid s Kingdom in WORM The rotation for the month of May is Paul on the Road to Damascus. The memory verse this month is Acts 9:17b Ananias placed his hands on him and said, "Saul, the Lord Jesus has sent me. He is the same one who appeared to you along the road. He wants you to be able to see and to be filled with the Holy Spirit." The story of Paul is a major turning point in the life of the early church. Saul, as he was formerly known, was a persecutor of anyone who was following the teachings of Christ. These teachings are referred to as the Way. Before the road to Damascus, Saul was a great opponent of Jesus followers. A very learned man in the ways of the Jewish law, Saul wanted to be sure that the Jewish faith stayed pure and true. He and other Jewish leaders of the time saw Jesus followers as a threat to the true faith. They set out to ensure their demise. Saul was on the front line of this battle against the Jesus followers. Our rotation this month teaches us that God calls even the most unlikely people to lead us in the Way. This story can help us to remember that no matter what our life choices have been, God s unending love for us allows new possibilities. Join us for each of our rotations this month in: Noah s Art Studio: The children will create a comic strip using the main events from the story Saul. Movement and Geography: The children will participate in a trust walk and understand the importance of following and trusting God even when you cannot see. A/V: The children will view two animated depictions of Saul s conversion and explore the similarities and differences. Science/Storytelling: The children use science experiments and the retelling of Saul s story to explore elements of Saul s character and his motivations.

7 OUTREACH May 2010 PAGE 7 Bon Air Stitchers Our meeting will be Monday, May 10 at 1 PM in the church library. We have decided to change our Yarn Month to May instead of in the Fall. There will be a basket outside of the church office for any donations you may wish to make during this time. Thank you to everyone who has generously contributed throughout the year. We have received many notes of thanks from MCV Hospital and Massey for our donations. Everyone is welcome to join us at our meetings. If you have any questions please call Rita at Evening Worship Christ as the Cornerstone May 2-6:00 p.m. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Living a life in Christ is not always easy, especially if we do not have the right foundation. Taking our cues from scripture, we know that building a house on sand is not wise, yet how often have we placed our faith in sinking sand? How often have we failed to build our foundations upon our Rock and Redeemer God? Join us as we look to Christ as the cornerstones in our lives, and with Christ as our foundation, we can withstand all the myriad difficulties that life can throw at us. Open the Door June 6-6:00 p.m. Listen! I am standing at the door knocking. These words from the book of Revelation serve as an invitation to discipleship and to welcome Jesus into our lives. We each stand at many doors but the question remains: are we ready to open the door? Certainly there are doors of temptation, but sometimes crossing the threshold into the unknown is exactly where Christ is calling each of us to go. Join us as we look at the doors of our lives, and discern when Jesus is on the other side, inviting us into relationship.
