Jesus Christ is God with humankind. He is the eternal Son of the Father, who became man and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. He is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. This work of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, humankind, and the world. Please see an usher before service to receive your wafer. Non-alcoholic grape juice is available in the outer ring of the Communion tray. The liturgist today is Allison Unroe (11:00). Allison is an inquirer of the ministry under care of the Session and a student at Union PSCE. Wednesday night dinners and choir schedules will resume January 6. The Session is calling congregational meetings for Sundays January 10 and 17. On January 10 at each service the Nominating Committee will make its report and the floor will be open to nominations. At the end of the meeting at 11 AM on January 10, the nominations will be closed. On January 17, the congregation will conduct its annual meeting during each worship service, receive reports from the Session and consider such other business as may be proper for the annual meeting. At the 11 AM version of the annual meeting the congregation will elect elders, a trustee, and members of the nominating committee from among those nominated on January 10. The grocery cart in the sanctuary today reminds us of our support of the 2 -a-meal Program and Bainbridge Community Center Food Pantry. Non perishable food items may be placed in the cart. The 2 -a-meal bucket is available for your monetary donations. Please give generously. Volleyball begins January 7 at 7:00. Bring friends and neighbors. All welcome. CARITAS -- We will be hosting CARITAS the week of Jan. 9th thru Jan. 16th. This project requires a great deal of manpower. You can check the church website or the bulletin board and sign up for one of the many opportunities to serve. We will be hosting all female guests. The Second Sunday South of the James Concert will feature Ben Houghton, Pianist and will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow the concert. The Church & Society Division will host the Coffee ½ Hour today. Please join us at 10:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Session members will be in the Parlor following each service of January 10 and after Wednesday night dinner on January 13 to answer questions and have conversation about the 2010 Budget and any concerns you would like to raise. Realizing that each year is a gift from God, the Birthday Program allows members and friends to express their gratitude to God through a gift to the church. Today the Confirmation Class of 2010 begins its classes and preparation for their public professions of faith later this spring. As they embark in this next phase of their faith journeys, they will be commissioned during the 11 AM Service. January s Mission Month Topic is BEYOND IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN: BROADENING OUR FOCUS. Please plan to join us from 9:30 10:30 each Sunday morning in January. Jan. 3 Cuba. Harold Greer, retired professor of History at VCU and a member of BAPC, will talk about the historical and current status of Cuba, both politically and from a Christian perspective. Jan. 10 Pakistan. Marianne Vermeer and her husband, Rev. Dr. Robert Johnston who recently spent time in Pakistan as missionaries at Foreman Christian College. Jan. 17 Korea/Asia. Rev. Syngman Rhee, former Moderator of the PCUSA General Assembly and professor at Union-PSCE, will talk about Korean/U.S. relations from a political and Christian perspective. Tae Hee Kwak, Pastoral Assistant at BAPC, will also participate in the presentation. Jan. 24 India. Narola McFayden is a native of the Eastern part of India and a graduate student at Union-PSCE. She will talk about her experience as a Christian living, traveling and witnessing to Jesus Christ in different parts of India for the past 30 years. She will also talk about how Indian politics affect Indian Churches and will focus on the role of Naga Churches and their ministry. Jan. 31 India/International Justice Ministry. Becky Acker Mohr grew up in BAPC. She and her husband, Steve Mohr recently completed a year of Christian ministry with International Justice Ministry in India. They will tell us what their ministry involved; their impression of the Indian culture and the political situation there; the role of Christianity in India; how Indian people view the U.S. and what IJM does internationally. Join us for Evening Worship at 6:00 PM. Tonight s theme is I am a Christian, what does that mean for my life? As we are all individual members of the body of Christ, we consider ourselves to be Christians. What does it mean to be a Christian in our everyday lives? How do we live out our faith? What is the new life that we have in Christ, and how are we to understand his relationship? Join us for Evening Worship on January 3 rd as we explore these questions, and celebrate communion together.

4 Jeremiah 31:7-14 For thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O LORD, your people, the remnant of Israel. 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd a flock. 11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. 12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the LORD, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again. 13 Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. 9 What gain have the workers from their toil? 10 I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. 11 He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth.
