1 OUTREACH BON AIR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., Richmond, VA 23235, Ph: , Fax: July 2011 No Longer Strangers The other day my daughter Chloe and I sat in Fenway Park watching the Red Sox play my hometown Padres. I marveled at the current batting averages of Adrian Gonzalez & David Ortiz. In fact Gonzalez went 4 for 4 that day. Well, I explained to Chloe that getting a hit 3.5 times for every 10 at bats was a pretty good thing. I told her about Boston s (and San Diego s!) Ted Williams, the last player to hit.400, some 70 years ago, I could see her wheels turning. So I said something like imagine what would happen if you came home with a test grade that said you missed 6 answers out of 10. She told me I d yell at her! True enough. Sometimes failure can be in the eyes of the beholder, sometimes its in the difficulty in the assignment, and sometimes its in the lack of taking the risk. I recently read a bit about Fred Astaire. He was without a doubt one of the top singers, dancers and actors of all time. In films such as Top Hat, Swing Time and Holiday Inn, he danced and crooned his way in the hearts of millions worldwide. Did you know that in 1932, when Astaire was starting out, a Hollywood talent judge wrote on a screen test: Can t act. Can t sing. Can dance, a little. Imagine if Astaire had taken that criticism to heart and sought another line of work? As disciples, there are times when we fail to be as attentive to God s direction for our lives as we should be. There are times when we can t seem to get it right. There are even times when we fail to try because we are afraid we ll fail! Paul said that what is foolish to others, is the power of God for those who follow in faith. Such power can overcomes our fears of trying the new direction God has charted, picks us up when we fall flat, and embraces us when we feel the cold chill of rejection. The trick is to keep at it. Keep working at your faith, keep trying to read more scripture, pray more daily, give more generously, reach out to others more often. Remember mom s old saw, If at first you don t succeed, try, try again! Shalom, Gordon Inside this month... 3 OUTREACH July 2011 PAGE 3 Opportunities to Serve Christ.to Make a Difference MICAH INITIATIVE BAPC belongs to the Micah Initiative, a faith based partnership program serving the Richmond Public Schools. The Micah Initiative started more than ten years ago and is supported by many congregations around Richmond and is run by Richmond Hill. The biblical calling for this program was found in the well-known directive of Micah 6:8 - And what does the Lord require of us but to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. The participants in this program work with at-need schools in Richmond. BAPC works at the Redd Elementary School located on Jahnke Road. This school has 80% of the children getting free lunch/breakfast and 40% of the students English is their second language. The volunteers can participate in several different rolls, as a tutor, mentor, lunch buddy or class room assistant. The commitment generally is one hour per week or as much as you choose to do. The training is provided by Richmond Hill and can be done in one morning or evening depending on the training class. There are several training classes throughout the summer and fall. The Richmond Public Schools serve the most distressed portion of our metropolitan city's school age population but they lack the resources to do it all by themselves. Anyone interested in joining the Micah group from BAPC please call the church office or Linda Johnston ( ). This is a truly rewarding project for both the mentor and the children that we serve. CARITAS IS ARRIVING July 9-16 CARITAS is the largest and most inclusive shelter program in Richmond. In addition, CARITAS offers support and guidance with full time case workers who work with each willing client to take the necessary financial, legal, medical, and emotional steps toward self-sufficiency. BAPC will host the Family CARITAS program this year from July 9 to July 16. With these families as in the Winter program, it is still simply about providing a roof and a bed but also, playtime with the kids, clean clothes, food, and love! As a congregation, we are pretty good about providing all of these ingredients in welcoming our CARITAS guests. Fulfilling these simple tasks for our CARITAS guests offer many opportunities for service and we need you. There are volunteer opportunities for behind-thescene s and working with our guests. In the family program, evening hosts have FUN playing games and/ or reading to the children. Please sign up on the bulletin board or call Brenda at the church office to volunteer for a specific duty. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!! There are available needs indicated for summer CARITAS. 6 PAGE 6 OUTREACH July 2011 PYC MASSANETTA SPRINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL CONFERENCE JULY I of the Storm Jesus says, Don t be afraid, It is I. Three powerful messages (at least) stand behind the theme text for the middle school conference. First, even as followers of Jesus the Christ, there are storms in our lives. Secondly, scripture confirms over and over that God is to be the center of our lives and we are to keep our focus on God. When our vision, our choices, our lives are distracted, and we aren't keeping our eyes on Jesus, as with Peter, we will sink. Thirdly, the God of our matriarchs and patriarchs is the great I AM. Jesus of Nazareth is the great I AM. Jesus who reaches out to rescue Peter is the great I AM. Indeed, this is our God too, and this God is ruler over all of life...even the storms. Nicole Gallini, Lydia Morris, Lindy Pokorny, Dylan Paz, Rachel Paz, Preston Smilek, April and Shawn Thomas Smith will all travel to Massanetta Springs to enjoy this time of retreat and reflection, learning about how the great I AM is in the midst of every aspect of life; before, during, and after the storms that come our way. Keep these people in your prayers July as they travel to experience the Christ in the I of the Storm while enjoying the fellowship of the Massanetta Middle School Conference in God s glorious creation. Montreat Youth Conference July Searching for the Signal The Montreat Youth Conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. Activities include morning energizers, music, keynote, small group meetings where the conference theme is explored, afternoon recreation activities, and evening worship. Billy Cleaton, Julia Gallini, Rebecca Huffine, Cara Kasten, Stuart Mapes, Maddie Negaard, Braden Wright, April, Mason and Shawn Thomas Smith, will gather on this journey in a living community. While at Montreat they will experience faithful ways to live out the call God has for each of them. Surrounded in a community of unconditional acceptance, the youth will sojourn as disciples of Jesus Christ, to return and spread a hopeful message by word and deed. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they are Searching for the Signal, July 24-30, and tap into the Divine that is calling to them.
7 OUTREACH July 2011 PAGE 7 Camp Hanover Day Camp at BAPC August Day Camp, a traveling program of Camp Hanover, is bringing the fun and opportunities for growth provided by residential camps to Bon Air Church. The camp is open to elementary age rising 2nd-6th grade: grandchildren, friends, and neighbors are all welcome to take part in this wonderful opportunity. The camp will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The day will be filled with Bible stories, games, nature study, worship, new friends, water play, and fellowship. Day Camp is staffed by a Day Camp Director and Counselors from Camp Hanover. Volunteers from Bon Air will help with snacks and other arrangements. The cost is $100 per child. Please contact Shawn Thomas Smith at the church office for more information. Registration forms are outside his office and are also available online at Join us for Christian fun in our own backyard at BAPC! Take up your Mantle The Chef s Club would like to thank the following people for their tireless duty in working to ensure meals were cooked, tables were set, dishes were washed, kitchens were cleaned, and fellowship was enjoyed by all: Russ and Halma Wilson Kay and Clay Richardson Fred and JoAnn Merritt Caryl Pigg Joan Collins Each of these individuals is retiring from the Chef s Club, and while replacement is impossible, there is an opportunity to take up their mantle and assist the Chef s club with a gift that you possess. The story of Elisha and Elijah is a perfect example of how one person passes responsibility to another. Mantle is defined as role, job, position, post, responsibility, task, duty, function. All of these adequately detail the passing of duty to another. While the charge of following in another s footsteps can be a difficult one, it is a fundamental aspect of the Christian Journey. So take up the mantle, and the next time you see one of these individuals, thank them for all their hard work and dedication. Well done good and faithful servants! BAPC PIG ROAST & Covered Dish Picnic July 3, 2011 Pig, Slaw, Baked Beans, & Drinks provided $4.00 per person + covered dish to share (bring lawn chairs if you want to watch the games) Sign up on Fellowship Bulletin Board 10:30 12:00 Games & Entertainment 12:00 Pig to be served
8 PAGE 8 OUTREACH July 2011 Are you ready for the challenge of a lifetime? Then Take the journey! Do what millions have always wanted to do Read the entire Bible In just 90 days! That s right; this Whole Church Challenge will take us from Genesis to Revelation in only 90 days. The Christian Education Division is excited about this opportunity that will increase our Biblical literacy and Christian Journeys. The design of the challenge is simple: Read about 12 pages a day in your Bible and in 90 days you will read the whole Bible, from cover to cover. Following the readings each week, the pastors will lead discussion groups detailing what was read. After 14 weeks of this journey, we will celebrate in our accomplishment of reading the greatest book ever written. Even if you have read the Bible before in its entirety, this opportunity allows you to be a part of a group. The Christian Education Division is encouraging all members to take part in this challenge, and invite friends to come along as well. There will be three class time offerings for weekly reflection and discussion; Sunday during the Sunday school hour and two other class times during the week. With the whole church involved, we encourage, connect and engage with the word of God, and mutually assure accomplishing this goal together. Just think of it: Every person at BAPC reading the Bible at the same time and every person at BAPC engaging with the Word every day! For the 14 weeks of this challenge a selection of each week s reading will be reinforced in worship on Sunday Morning. The text that will be preached will be a part of what you have read the previous week. Combining the efforts of Worship and Education together is an opportunity to bring our worshipping life and our educational foundations together. Look for the signs up around the church. Sing up will begin July 17 th on the bulletin board outside the church office. Join us as we experience the Bible together and turn your aspiration into inspiration!
