3 OUTREACH June, 2017 PAGE 3 FINDING UNITY IN DIVERSITY At the Trialogue Interfaith Discussions at Or Ami, Rabbi Ahuva Saches presented a wonderful metaphor for finding unity between the three Abrahamic faiths; Jewish, Muslim, and Christian. I offer a summary of her talk for your consideration and reflection. Remember when you were a freshman in college. You were nervous; new places, new faces, new expectations. The academic advisor met with the students and explained the courses that would be required. One was American History 101. There were courses offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings by three difference professors, using three different primary textbooks. However, all of the courses covered the same basic material. Each course included studies of the colonial expansion, the development of the republic, the laws and constitution, as well as important figures such as Washington and Lincoln. As the semester came to a close, the students prepared for final examinations. Some studied with others from their own class so that they could focus on the particular emphases of their professor. Some students studied with others in their dorm who had taken courses taught by various professors. A few students studied on their own. When the exams were taken and graded, it turned out that the students who studied with those from their own class scored higher on the multiple choice questions. However, the students who studied with those from various classes had a broader understanding of the subject matter and scored higher on the essay questions. Since the essay questions carried more weight, those who studied with students from other courses earned the higher grades. Rabbi Ahuva challenged us to consider that we are all students in the University of Life, enrolled in the course, God and the Divine Will 101. Our courses meet at different times of the week, such as, Sunday mornings, Friday mid-day, and Friday evenings. We are disciples/students of various prophets and teachers: Jesus, Mohammad, and Moses. And, we have our own textbooks: the Bible, the Quran, and the Torah. However, since we are taking the same course, we are learning the same basic material from differing perspectives. Our studies have included the Golden Rule, honoring our parents, working for peace and justice, as well as important figures such as Noah and Abraham. We practice many of the same disciplines. We pray and study, worship and serve. And, we can be relieved that there is no final examination with multiple choice and essay questions. However, keeping the college students experience in mind, we recognize that studying with those from our own class would help us to learn the specifics of our own faith, however we would develop a deeper understanding and richer experience of God by studying with those from the other courses. This is a wonderful metaphor to affirm our need and the blessing of engaging in dialogue with those from different faith traditions. I wonder if this can also be applied to our divided and contentious American society. Sociologists have identified the trend whereby people cluster in organizations and communities with like-minded individuals who reinforce their own viewpoints, thus strengthening their resolve and limiting their perspective. Both conservatives and liberals are sequestering themselves with people with whom they agree. During the 20 th Century, we all watched the daily news broadcasted on one of three or four television stations and so we all heard relatively the same news. We may not have agreed with the newscaster, but we all were presented with basically the same information. Now, we can choose among numerous network and cable channels and readily choose the one that fits our world view. We are hearing different facts and perspectives on what is happening in our society. In fact, we may not have any idea what is being reported on stations other than our favorites. No wonder we are living in such a divided society. We have very different understandings of who we are and what is going on in our nation and our world. Applying Rabbi Ahuva s metaphor, we are studying with students from our own class and missing out on the wisdom and insights of those studying with different professors with different texts, periodicals, and newscasts. Maybe the Trialogue Interfaith Discussions can be a model for all of us who are studying in the University of Life. The Trialogue guides us to mutual communication which includes respectfully and openly listening to those with life experiences, opinions, and beliefs different than our own in an attempt to deepen our understanding and relationships with each other. My friends, time has come for interpersonal, as well as interfaith, dialogue that knocks down the walls between us and builds bridges of forgiveness, healing, and reconciliation.
4 PAGE 4 OUTREACH June, 2017 WHEN WORDS FAIL Practical Ministry to People with Dementia and Their Caregivers Begins on Sunday, June 4, at 9:45 a.m. Millions of Americans live with dementia today and that number is expected to triple in the next thirty years. Often, when words begin to fail for people with dementia, they also fail for those around them, who don t know what to say or what to do. Join Pastor Janet for a four-week discussion based on the DVD produced by Westminster Canterbury, Richmond, and learn ways to reach out to people living with dementia and bring joy and spiritual nourishment even after words have failed. Develop a better understanding of how to visit and support, not only people living with dementia, but their caregivers, too. Invite friends and family who would like greater insight and practical caring skills to help support those whose memories are fading as well as those they love. WORSHIP! July 2 at 10:00 a.m. Fellowship Hall We will kick off the Summer Worship Schedule with a celebration filled with Gospel music and fun followed by our Annual Pig Roast! Save the Date Invite Family and Friends!

6 PAGE 6 OUTREACH June, 2017 ELDER APPRECIATION ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION Sunday, June 11, during both worship hours As we complete another year of mission and ministry together, let s pause to thank those dedicated leaders who have guided us along the way. Pete Gallini proved that you can survive three years on the Property Team. During his tenure as moderator, Pete coordinated the work of the team as well as the congregation in being responsible stewards of our facility and grounds. Recovery efforts from storm damage were coordinated and completed. HVAC and boiler maintenance and repair was completed. New sanctuary carpeting was installed over a sound loop. There is a renewed commitment to building a fund for deferred maintenance. And, of course, the major project continues with contractors and architects for further development of the renovation plans for our facility. Kraig Negaard and Craig Fabian brought the Communications Team into the 21 st Century! Not only did newspaper articles and banners let the community know about our special programs and services, the team redesigned our church website and made it accessible on phones and other devices. The team surveyed and updated IT equipment and developed guidelines and policies for the use, maintenance, and purchase of new IT equipment. They also contracted with a firm for regular maintenance, repair, and update of our computers. Mary Ricketts guided the Hospitality and Welcome Team in changing their team name, supporting the design and installation of the new Endowment-funded interior church signs, designing and distributing invitation postcards to holiday worship services and special programs, and initiating of the Welcome Table to greet guests (and members) on Easter Sunday. Alan Sestak began on the Property Team and then, while continuing as a member of the Property Team, served as the Moderator of the Worship Team. Alan led a dedicated team that worked behind the scenes to provide meaningful worship experiences and support our music ministries. During Alan s tenure, worship was coordinated with our Advent and Lenten small group discussion topics and some innovative worship experiences were offered, like the Living Lord s Supper Ernie Wright has moderated our Church and Society Team which coordinates our outreach and justice ministries, promotes special denominational offerings, and manages benevolence contributions to our mission partners. During Ernie s tenure, the Kroger Community Partners Program was initiated to raise additional funds to support benevolences. We re-enrolled in ACTS (Area Congregations Together in Service) to coordinate our services to neighbors in need and began plans for an intergenerational mission trip to West Virginia. Ed Callear joined the Staff Relations Team as they worked on updating the Personnel Manual and began the development of a Sexual Misconduct Polity. Joan Collins continued her service on the Congregational Care Team, arranging for rides and emergency meals as she guided us in caring for each other. Thomas Jackson played a vital role in maintaining our facility, especially reaching high places and replacing parking lot lights. Greta Reeves moderated our Adult Education Committee which brought us stimulating Sunday school courses as well as the Advent Scrooge and Lenten The Way small group discussions. During the worship services on June 11, we will be ordaining and installing Pam Hinterlong, Claude Foster, Nancy Peace, and Mindy Peters as new elders. We will install Darleen Cavin, Stephen Galyen, and Nora Narum. They will be joining continuing elders Linda Bollinger, Becky Bullock, Irene Caperton, Carolyn Carper, Mark Fagerberg, Tom Hephner, Liz Little, Bruce Miller, Terry Oggel, Phyllis Smith, Darin Smouse, and Kaete Unterzuber. We certainly have a strong and dedicated leadership team for the coming year of mission and ministry together!
7 OUTREACH June, 2017 PAGE 7 SUMMER SERVICE REFRESHMENTS Summer sun, savory snacks, and festive fellowship...yes, it's time for summer service refreshments! Everyone enjoys the time we spend together after Sunday worship in the summer and now we are adding a new element - you. Over the years, the summer refreshments have been hosted by the teams, divisions, committees, and circles of our congregation. The new twist this summer is the opportunity for anyone to share a little gracious hospitality - maybe you and a few friends would like to host a Sunday together, but you are on different committees. Maybe you aren t on a formal team it doesn t matter - your input and your contribution are always welcome. A sign up will be available in the lobby beginning in June. If you have any questions please contact Darleen Cavin (804) You are the most important part of summer service refreshments so please join us, even if contributing to refreshments is not for you, that is fine - your company is the best contribution! See you at the portico! Richmond Peace Education Center what is it, and what does it do? Bon Air Presbyterian Church has supported the Richmond Peace Education Center in numerous ways over the past several years. The RPEC works actively in the Richmond community to build a more peaceful environment. For almost four decades, the RPEC has offered workshops, public events, and educational training opportunities to make a difference in the Richmond region. The RPEC s Richmond Youth Peace Project is one of the many programs designed to transform the culture and conditions that lead to youth violence. Our Peace Offering s local portion has gone to support this program aimed at helping our youth with conflict resolution. Thank you to everyone in our church for supporting the Peace Offering. If you would like more info, visit the RPEC website at Ordination/Installation of Elders June 11, :30 & 11:00 a.m. Prime Time Circle will meet on Monday, June 5, for our out-to-dinner meeting at Crab Louie s at 6:30 p.m. The Sisters Circle will meet on Tuesday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Middle School Room.
