1 RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD *PROCLAIMING OUR FAITH (from The Heidelberg Catechism) What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I belong body and soul, in life and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of evil; that he protects me so well that, without the will of God, not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready, from now on, to live for him. *SONG OF FAITH Jesus Calls Us Number 720 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Colin Pettigrew In your mercy Lord, You hear our prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING Lenten Meditation Flor Peeters *SONG OF PRAISE Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Number 606 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. 2 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY March 26, th Sunday in Lent 11:00 a.m. (LARGE PRINT BULLETINS, PEW BIBLES AND ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES ARE AVAILABLE FROM OUR USHERS) *Please stand, if able. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Minute for Mission Kroger Community Rewards Program *SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. TOLLING OF THE BELLS GATHERING AS THE PEOPLE OF GOD Janet Winslow Ernie Wright PRELUDE Elegy John Ireland Steve Henley Kate Hurlbert, Acolyte CHORAL INTROIT Chancel Choir O Worship the Lord Robert McCutchan *INVITATION TO WORSHIP With steadfast love and growing faith, We come as the people of Christ. With prayers of hope and songs of joy, We come to worship God, the eternal and ever-loving. With thankful hearts and humble prayers, We come to give God glory and praise. Here, we are together as people of faith to celebrate the Good News of Jesus Christ. *OPENING PRAYER Meet us here, Gracious God, for we need your reassurance. Amid our griefs and empty toil, comfort and redirect us. From our fears, deliver us. In our confusion, lend your light to guide us. Gather us in watchful anticipation, lest we miss the signs of your presence and fail to hear your summons to follow Christ Jesus. Amen. *SONG OF FAITH Here In This Place Number 401 PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lauren Ramseur O Lord, we dare to walk on water and manage a few steps; not big stylish strides of course, but many starts and stops. Then, daunting fears arrive, blown on an alien wind. It s obvious that we have not mastered the basics of serving our Christ. Only his presence saves us from sinking in the storm. Sometimes we sourly grumble and wish for less risky acts. Does walking on water really matter? It s easier on the roads. Forgive us, Lord, for our faltering faith and faulty attempts to walk in the way of our Savior. Amen. PRAYER RESPONSE Take, O Take Me as I Am Number 698 Take, O take me as I am; summon out what I shall be; Set your seal upon my heart and live in me. ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVING FORGIVENESS God turns us around, opens our eyes, renews our faith, and forgives our sins. We are truly blessed. Thanks be to God! *SONG OF FAITH Great Is Thy Faithfulness Verse 3 Number 39 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! HEARING GOD S WORD PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Holy God, as we open your Word, we lay aside all that hinders us from listening to your voice. We ask that you grant us grace to hear, wisdom to understand and courage to apply what we learn. Amen. HEBREW SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 107: THE WORD IN MUSIC Contemplation of the Cross K. 3 SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 107: Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 24 they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. 25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26 They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; 27 they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits end. 28 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; 29 he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 31 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. Matthew 14: Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. 28 Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. 29 He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.
