Along the Way Advent-Christmas-Epiphany Lord, before this fleeting season is upon us, let me remember to walk slowly. Lord, bless my heart with Love and with quiet. Give my heart a leaning to hear carols. Grace our family with contentment, and the peace that comes only from You. Lord, help us to do less this busy season; go less; stay closer to home; kneel more. May our hearts be Your heart. May we simply, peacefully, celebrate You. Lord, Before This Fleeting Season, words by MaryAnn Jindra Oxford University Press. Just in time. Time is a courtesy, I once heard. We often drive our lives by the clock so that we can be on time. Our theme is rooted in the words of Paul to the Churches of Galatia--- But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Galatians 4:4-7 In the fullness of time Time is God s time ( Kairos is the Greek which can also mean ripe time, and the time of Mary was suddenly changed into nine months time when an angel visitation promised a birth that would change the world. On December 3, we will enter the Time of Advent. A little different this year with Christmas Eve on Sunday which is also the Fourth Sunday of Advent. 3 Worship and Liturgical Arts The Saint Andrew s Concert Series begins with two Advent/Christmas concerts. All concerts are FREE and open to the public. Invite a friend! As we approach the Advent/Christmas Season, the season can bring happiness, joy and promise. The season can also bring stress, and plenty of it. Many forces can pull at us. Time out, reboot! The Emmaus Trio: Candle Light Concert Saturday, December 2, 7:00 pm Join us Saturday, December 2, at 7:00 pm for an evening of Mozart, Piazzola, Rutter, and Christmas favorites, played by the Emmaus Trio in the Sanctuary lit by candle light. Relax to an hour of beautiful music in a peaceful and spiritual setting. Reset yourself and enjoy music that will feed your soul and mind. Mozart s Piano Trio in B-flat, two of Piazzola s Tangos, and several Christmas pieces make for a refreshing evening and start to the Advent season. A beautiful reception will follow in 301/Fellowship Hall. The Emmaus Trio is Karin Islip, violin; Lauren Root, cello; and Dr. Will Simpson, piano. Bells of the Sound: Peace on Earth Sunday, December 17, 4:00 pm eace on earth, goodwill to Pmen! was the message the angels brought to the shepherds in the fields on that first Christmas Eve. This is the very essence of the Christmas spirit that fills us this time of year. Bells of the Sound will share this message as they present Peace on Earth, featuring traditional carols and songs of peace from around the world. Please join us on this goodwill journey to ring in the holiday spirit! Bells of the Sound is not your typical handbell choir. Under the direction of Shirley Lindberg, this talented group of musicians is a dynamic force in the handbell world - encouraging composers to create new works and advancing this exciting instrument into the mainstream of entertainment. They perform on one of the largest sets of handbells and chimes in the country. Visit for more information. Saint Andrew s member Vanessa Wilkie is a member of Bells of the Sound. Contact Fellowship Coordinator Sherry Grindeland, sherry@ SALChome.org or Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza Worship and Liturgical Arts Dear Members and Friends of Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, The Seattle chapter of the American Guild of Organists would like to thank your congregation for allowing us to use your beautiful facility for our Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event on Saturday, November 4. This event is designed to introduce young piano students to the wonderful world of the pipe organ. Twenty-five students enjoyed an exciting day of workshops and group lessons. Julia Lacey of Saint Andrew s was one of the students. They were led by 10 adult volunteers; among the adult educators were Will and Erin Simpson. The participants spent the morning at Saint Andrew s attending three one-hour workshops: an overview of how the pipe organ works, introductory handbell ringing, and construction of a small functioning pipe organ. Following their pizza lunch, the students were divided into groups of three or four and each group spent the afternoon either at Saint Andrew s or one of six other nearby churches for some hands-on time at a pipe organ. Each student received a real wooden organ pipe and a certificate. A special thank you goes to your Director of Music Ministries, Dr. Will Simpson, who coordinated all of the events, helped with the organ demonstration workshop, and taught one of the afternoon sessions. Perhaps, several of these students who attended will go on to become organists or church musicians. And all will at least have a better understanding and appreciation of what Mozart called the King of Instruments (The Pipe Organ). Rita Stoess, Director Pedals, Pipes and Pizza Seattle Chapter, American Guild of Organists Choir at Crossroads Mall Members of the Saint Andrew s Chancel Choir will be singing Christmas Carols at the Crossroads Mall in Bellevue on Saturday, December 16, at 4:30 pm. This event is sponsored by the American Guild of Organists Seattle Chapter. Everyone is invited to this half-hour concert with choir, organ, and strings. For more information, contact Dr. Will Simpson, will@salchome.org or See you there! Welcome and Worship with Children There are a variety of tools to welcome children in worship. These tools include a worship summary form for kids (available in the Narthex), prayer/offering cards for kids (in the pew racks), Little Disciples Tips in the bulletin on how to engage children in worship, and a spot set aside just for kids on the east side of the Sanctuary. Children may borrow Spark Bibles (available in the Narthex) during worship to follow along with the lessons and parts of worship. 4 - Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA December 2017

5 .... on A Quiet Christmas Reflections.... by Lowell Arneson Standing in the middle of the night, with my hands in my bathrobe pockets, I m looking at the Pacific Ocean. The moonlight is dispersed by a light overcast sky, and a fresh layer of fallen snow. Having just arrived yesterday, we re in cabin 16 at Iron Springs Resort, Copalis Beach on the Washington Coast. To my left, I see a few live embers from last evening s fire, and to my right a fully decorated Christmas tree with light from the moon reflecting off the decorations. The ocean is still. Our dog sleepily walks to my side and presses her head against my thigh. I pet her neck and behind her ears. She slowly returns to her sleep, as do I. Twenty some years ago, our daughter and husband and we were all working full-time. We all looked forward to the Christmas season with all our family traditions and activities, but we started thinking that we were almost becoming slaves to them. So much to do, and so little time to just sit and reflect on the meaning, beauty, and warmth of the Season. As an alternative, we decided to try getting away to a quieter (also more rustic) place for Christmas. The place we chose was Iron Springs, an old resort on the ocean where there was no TV reception, central heating, or reliable cell service. When the electric power was on, we had lights, kitchen range/oven, and running water. When the power went out (sometimes for hours) we had none of the above. Perfect! We timed our stay to arrive on the afternoon of the day before Christmas Eve, and return home the day after Christmas. Our two SUVs were loaded with clothes, food, presents, games, coolers, and tree decorations. Our first stop along the way was Ballard, where we stopped at the Scandinavian Specialties store to pick up cold cuts like rulle polse and sylte. Also some cheeses, and sometimes lutefisk. The last stop was at the tree lot for our tree and a few feet of garlands for our window trimming. As we left the city going south on 1-5, I could really feel something like a releasing of tension, and when we left 1-5 toward the ocean beaches, we relaxed more and more. On arrival, we did an assessment of the quality and quantity of firewood on hand. Then it was to get our tree in its stand so that it would have a couple hours to straighten out before we put on the lights. Unloading the two vehicles was a project in itself, which would take the four of us a half hour to accomplish. Now it was time to build a fire, put stuff away, and get settled in. At this point, our son-in-law and I would put the lights on the Christmas tree. Together, we were fast. Usually we would put on three strings of lights in about 6 or 7 minutes, most of the time laughing our heads off. The rest of the decorating was kind of a joint effort at a relaxed pace. Our activities were leisurely, consisting of at least a couple extended walks on the beach (the dog s favorite), regardless of weather. Also, playing table games, reading, listening to music on our CD player, and always gazing out at the ocean. On Christmas Eve, we would make Swedish Glog (hot spiced wine), and in late afternoon have our Christmas service (i.e. Scripture reading, prayer, and singing carols) and begin opening gifts. Around seven, or so, we would have our evening meal, which always included oyster stew, and sometimes lutefisk. Christmas Day morning was the final opening of gifts, followed by smoked salmon/cream cheese omelets. Christmas dinner was almost always wild mallard duck, with wild rice. The next day, we would load our vehicles, and reenter the work-a-day world we had left a few days earlier. The world had not changed much, but in some vague sense, we had changed. It had been a quiet Christmas, but not boring; restorative, but not life changing. It was a good thing for us, so we did it each year for fourteen years. It s not for everyone, I m sure, but it might be worth a try. Congregation Collaborations Saint Andrew s is in relationship with area congregations! Here are some of the ways we are collaborating with other Lutherans in our community: Men s Retreat: Saint Andrew s and Our Savior Lutheran co-hosted a Men s Retreat on November 3-4. Timber Ridge Worship Gatherings: Saint Andrew s and Our Savior Lutheran have members who live at Timber Ridge. Members of both congregations are invited to worship gatherings. Women s Retreat: Our Savior Lutheran is coordinating a Women s Retreat on March 2-4, 2018, and has invited area congregations to participate. See page 12. Vacation Bible School: Saint Andrew s, Our Savior Lutheran, and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran teamed up to host Vacation Bible School (VBS) last summer. Look for collaboration at next summer s VBS too: July 9-13, Imagine Housing Project at Saint Luke s Lutheran: Sixty-three units of affordable housing will be built by Imagine Housing on property at Saint Luke s Lutheran (3030 Bellevue Way NE). Half of the units are designated for the homeless; 20% for the disabled. Groundbreaking is December 12. See page 16. December 2017 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 5

6 Joshua Process Missional Assessment Profile (MAP) Summary Scott Lester, Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church Council President Thank you to those of you that participated in the online missional assessment profile (MAP) survey and the Internal Listening interviews with Pastors Jim Weckwerth and Tom Jolivette as part of the Joshua Process. It s such a blessing to Ministry receive your input as we work toward developing a Vision for our Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church community. Last month, in late October, Pastors Weckwerth and Jolivette delivered an initial summary of the MAP survey results. One or both will be back next month, in early Pa hways to Renewal Pathways to Renewal December, to deliver a report to our Congregation that details their findings, as a result of both the survey and interviews, and offers recommendations on our next steps forward. The whole Congregation is invited to join us on Tuesday, December 5, at 6:00 pm, for this event. This Joshua Process exercise is a direct response to the Congregation s commitment to supporting our pastoral transition process, developing a clear congregational vision, and informing future initiatives. Your Congregation Council will consider any recommendations offered in December and take active steps forward in terms of addressing necessary actions. At the Annual Meeting in late January, we will again summarize the report, lift up adopted recommendations, and possibly seek dialogue / direction on other initiatives. In the meantime, the Joshua Process MAP survey results tell us the following: Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, as a whole, is doing great work in living out its mission and impacting its members; As individuals, our involvement in the congregation serves to deepen our faith and enables us to provide service to others; However, we have ambivalence about whether/how we are actually contributing to advancing the mission of the church; Furthermore, we possess a lack of clarity regarding the congregation s shared purpose we are many parts, but not always cohesive; And, we have a diminished sense of trust and openness around decision-making by congregational leadership. But also, there is great potential for increased giving with greater understanding and emphasis on generosity Your Congregation Council is looking forward to taking the next steps to better understand how we move forward in a shared ministry. I invite your continued questions. Contact Scott Lester. In conclusion please consider how we got to this point. Summary of Process Late Congregation Council expressed interest in developing in hiring a consultant to assist us with strategic planning and pastoral transition. January Congregational Council communicated this plan at the Annual Meeting. Spring Internal Missional Matrix was developed. Early Summer After identifying qualified consultants and vetting references, Council voted to engage with The Joshua Group. Late Summer Following several weeks of active communication ( s, print, chancel chats), Congregation members were invited to participate in the MAP survey. There were 120 respondents. Fall Again, after several weeks of promotion and communication, Congregation members were invited to participate in Internal Listening interviews either as individuals or as part of groups. December Results of the survey and interviews will be reported to the Congregation along with recommendations. Special Notes and Points As an active Congregation in Christ, it is important to offer clarity and distinguish a few items. The Joshua Process is an active engagement that serves to help us develop a new Vision Plan, and serves to support our pastoral transition process. Pathways to Renewal is an umbrella stewardship campaign developed by Council and Staff that serves to capture the Spirit and energy of several programs and initiatives. Neither The Joshua Process nor Pathways to Renewal is a capital campaign, however, our Building Remodel Team is working under the Pathways to Renewal umbrella to help educate our Congregation on the work that is being done there. Consultants from The Joshua Group do also support congregations seeking assistance in developing successful capital campaigns through a program they call, The Kairos Process. There is the possibility that when we get closer to that need, we will continue to work with these consultants. There is no current date for when we would ask the Congregation for a vote on a capital campaign in support of the proposed building remodel. 6 - Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA December 2017

11 Health and Wholeness Children and the News by Jakki Parks During these tough times in our country where families are exposed to difficult news, many of us are scratching our heads over how to hear our children s challenging questions. I m grateful to be a part of Saint Andrew s Health and Wholeness Ministry Committee so I can share my experience as a parent and educator. Children ages 3-8 are capable of talking about their feelings and it s our entrusted responsibility to guide them as they react and learn to process tough happenings around them. I found the following article helpful and I hope you do too. Children often hear and see the news many times a day through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. Seeing and hearing about local and world events, such as natural disasters, catastrophic events, and crime reports may cause children to experience stress, anxiety, and fears. Guidelines for minimizing the negative effects of watching the news include: monitor the amount of time your child watches news shows make sure you have adequate time and a quiet place to talk if you anticipate that the news is going to be troubling or upsetting to the child watch the news with your child ask the child what he/she has heard and what questions he/she may have provide reassurance regarding his/her own safety in simple words emphasizing that you are going to be there to keep him/her safe look for signs that the news may have triggered fears or anxieties such as sleeplessness, fears, bedwetting, crying, or talking about being afraid If you want to read more of this article, go here: FFF-Guide/Children-And-The-News-067.aspx I would also add that leaving the TV on all day long, even though you may think it s in the background for you, your young child picks up information and can react to television news. I hope these tips and the article in the link are helpful as we guide our kids in learning about living in God s world with curiosity, faith and support. 14 Outreach and Servant Ministries Our Core Ministries... Core Outreach Ministries of Saint Andrew s are specific areas of ministry which congregation members are most involved in with various resources, including time, expertise, and financial resources. Our Core Outreach Ministries fall into five categories: ~ Affordable Housing/Homelessness ~ Hunger ~ Christian Education non-profits ~ Local Ministries ~ Global Missions The members of the Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee are: Joyce Arnold, Dave Marcrander, Pastor McEachran, Karen Grams (Council Liaison), George Miller, Becca Piel, Debbie Szabo, Dick Szabo, Ann Thorpe (Council Liaison), Marlyn Thorpe (Chair), and Jean Wahlstrom. Ministry Prayer Focus Each month, as a congregation, we pray for one of the ministries we support and partner with, in the world and in our community. In December, we ll pray for MaaSAE Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS) in Monduli, Tanzania. Established in 1995, this first-of-its-kind residential school for daughters of the Maasai and other semi-nomadic people has supported girls education. Today, over 300 girls from impoverished backgrounds are part of this nurturing, supportive educational community. In a Tanzanian girl s life, education makes all the difference: It will nearly triple a woman s income; she will reinvest 90 percent of her income into her family; with a secondary education, a woman will marry later and have fewer children; she is less likely to contact HIV/AIDS; and her children have a 40 percent better chance of living to age 5. MGLSS offers girls the chance to make a brighter future for themselves and for their families. Saint Andrew s members Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen served at MGLSS as teachers and chaplain from and again in Numerous Saint Andrew s members sponsor students. Each Advent season, we have the opportunity to purchase uniforms for new MGLSS students. Uniforms for MGLSS Students Once again we have an opportunity to clothe a Maasai girl in her new uniform at the Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS). We need 50 outfits, $50 per outfit. Each outfit includes 2 logo t-shirts, a khaki skirt, a red sweatshirt, a pair of black shoes, 3 pairs of socks, and 3 pairs of underwear. These will be washed weekly and well-cared for to last for 2 years. Then they get the waist adjusted on their skirt (they grow quite a bit during those years!) and 2 new t-shirts. See the display in the Narthex. Please write your check to Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church and note MGLSS Uniforms on the memo line. If you want to pay cash, place it in an envelope designated MGLSS Uniforms. Place your donation in the offering plate or return it to the church office. Then, please take one of the little girl figures off the display in the Narthex. It lets us know how many have been clothed and gives you a tree ornament as a prayer reminder for these young girls as they begin their educational journey. For more information, contact Jean Wahlstrom. Thanks for helping! Love Tree Christmas season is coming and we at Saint Andrew s have a special opportunity to brighten the holidays for others. This year our focus is on the needs of our Eastside community by providing gifts for Bridge Disability Ministries, Sophia Way, Eastside Baby Corner, Andrew s Glen and Imagine Housing. Look for the Love Tree in the Narthex. Take a tag (or two), purchase gifts and return them unwrapped (no later than Sunday, December 3) to the Love Tree. Questions? Contact Carolyn Haralson or Joanne Baker. Gift Bags for Bridge Disability Ministries Bridge Disability Ministries is a faith-based organization, located on the Eastside, with services to help people with disabilities. Every holiday season, within the Love Tree program, several Saint Andrew s families adopt a Bridge Ministries client. Each of those families then buys gifts for that person from a list that is provided. Thank you to all who give to this ministry. Gifts must be returned to the church by November 22. Please contact Joanne Baker if you would like to participate in this very special ministry Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA December 2017

The delivery window is 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursday afternoons with around 2 to 4 stops. Additional volunteers are needed. Choose to be a driver in the rotation or to be a substitute driver and cover weeks where regular volunteers are on vacation. Training provided. If you are interested in serving in this way, contact Outreach and Servant Ministries committee chair Marlyn Thorpe. Collections Dorcas Circle, Health and Wholeness Ministry, and Outreach and Servant Ministries welcome your contributions for Lutheran World Relief, Compass Housing Alliance, and Congregations for the Homeless. Lists of needed items are in the baskets near the elevator in the Narthex. Donations can be placed in the same baskets. Eastside Baby Corner Outreach and Servant Ministries Socks and Warm Hat Donations to Benefit Compass Housing Alliance Dorcas Circle is collecting NEW socks and warm knit hats for Compass Housing Alliance. Your donations of NEW tube socks, crew socks, and warm knit hats can be placed in the box in the Narthex until December 31. Please contact Linda Willenberg if you have any questions. Eastside Baby Corner (EBC) envisions a world where all children are healthy, safe and prepared to build their own futures. EBC does this by meeting basic needs of children, serving as a diaper bank, a clothing bank, and a food source for more than 800 kids each week. Saint Andrew s currently supports Eastside Baby Corner with budgeted funds and gifts through the Love Tree. To learn more about EBC, visit Foods of the Month - November During November in the Corner of Blessing we are collecting food to go in Emergency Bags for the Hopelink food bank. When someone comes to the Hopelink food bank in need of food and for some reason is not able to shop at the food bank on that day, they don t go away empty handed. They get an Emergency Bag. We invite everyone to help pack these bags as part of the Advent Fair on November 26. We will be packing two types of Emergency Bags: A one-person bag and a two-person bag. The contents are very similar with the two-person bag having more of some of the items. There are a number of items that go in each Emergency Bag. We are collecting different items each week during November: November 19: Soup, Vegetables, and Beans Canned Soup Canned Vegetables (~15 ounce green beans or peas and carrots) Canned Beans (~15 ounce black, pinto, or kidney) November 26: Catch-Up; bring any of the following items Canned Tuna (5-7 ounce, packed in water) Pasta (16 ounce package of dry pasta) Pasta Sauce (~24 ounce can of pasta sauce) Peanut Butter (~16 ounce plastic jar no-stir) Instant Oatmeal packages (plain or flavored) Pudding Snack Packs (non-refrigerated) Rice (1 or 2 pound bags of rice white or brown) Bring donations to the Corner of Blessing in the Narthex, and plan to stop by our station during the Advent Fair to help pack bags! Thanks! Food of the Month - December During December, we ll collect canned meats: canned tuna, SPAM, canned chicken and Vienna saussage. Bring donations to the Corner of Blessing in the Narthex. Thanks for providing these important sources of protein foods to our hungry neighbors! December 2017 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 15

16 Volunteer with The Sophia Way Outreach and Servant Ministries The Sophia Way assists women from homelessness to independence. They have an overnight shelter for 22 women to sleep, a Day Center that is open to drop-ins, job search, casework, and an office. The Sophia Way organization is in need of volunteers in the Day Center for sorting the donated clothes and items they receive, and for making sure the women visiting the Day Center have the clothing they need. The Day Center is located at St. Luke s Lutheran Church (3030 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue.) Volunteers need to attend an orientation. If you are interested in or want more information, please contact Tara, The Sophia Way volunteer coordinator, New Outreach Opportunity: Boxtops for Education Last December Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen volunteered for a month at the Navajo Lutheran Mission (NELM) in Rock Point, Arizona, an ELCA project. The Mission School has asked if Saint Andrew s would participate in this easy way to secure needed school supplies and equipment. Please cut out and bring those little coupons found on various food containers (General Mills products and others). Collect and put them in the envelope attached to the bulletin board in the Narthex, labeled BOX TOPS. Louise Oda will regularly send them on to the school. It may seem like too small an item to make a difference, but collectively, it really adds up to enable these children to get a better education!! Thanks for your help!! To learn more, visit or contact Jean Wahlstrom. Jean Wahlstrom, on behalf of the Outreach and Servant Ministry Committee Imagine Housing: Groundbreaking Ceremony at 30Bellevue Please join Imagine Housing, Red Vines 1, our partners, and community leaders for a ceremony followed by lunch as we break ground on 30Bellevue, a new affordable apartment community in the Northtowne neighborhood of Bellevue. Made possible by a partnership with Saint Luke s Lutheran Church, 30Bellevue will provide 63 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom units for people making 80% or less of the area median income. The groundbreaking is on Tuesday, December 12, from 11:00 am 1:00 pm at Pierson Hall, Saint Luke s Lutheran Church in Bellevue (3030 Bellevue Way NE). Imagine Housing is excited to begin construction on 30Bellevue and thanks everyone for support as they continue to work to develop more affordable housing on the Eastside! RSVP at imaginehousing.org/30bellevue-groundbreaking/ Global Outreach...Bihar, India Mission in Bihar...with Lutheran World Relief Bihar is a global mission field which is engaging us in significant, multi-year outreach in Northeastern India as part of a sponsored mission through Lutheran World Relief (LWR). 17 Tanzania Outreach and Servant Ministries...Global Why are Jean and Marv Going Back to Tanzanzia? Jean Wahlstrom now serves on the International Advisory Board for the PLASTER HOUSE, a part of the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre. In February 2018 the Plaster House is having their first face-to-face board meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, and also celebrating the opening of the new dormitory and volunteer house. (Many Saint Andrew s members helped to fund those buildings in October 2016.) Marvin Kananen and Jean Wahlstrom will travel to Tanzania for this board meeting in February. The Plaster House is a rehabilitation center for postsurgery children, usually in casts (hence the term Plaster House ). For reasons of health and nutrition, many children cannot rehab successfully in their villages/homes while in casts. They need to stay at the center; the average stay being four weeks, the cost per student is only $4 per day. To learn more about the Plaster House, visit www. theplasterhouse.org and learn why those kids have a hold on our hearts. The Plaster House asks if we could provide the following items for children (aged 3-15): DUPLO blocks pencils scissors underwear (non-white) metric rulers socks (non-white) flashcards (math and English language) Bring items to the basket in the Narthex from November 5 through January 15, Marvin and Jean can carry about 150 pounds of supplies. If you have any questions, please contact Jean. MGLSS Students and Graduates Thank you for continuing to support students at MaaSAE Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS)! We are asked to help with providing 35 scholarships for the new Form One class, an increase of 10 students from previous years due to current needs. The amounts will stay the same: $500 for a half scholarship and $1,000 for a full scholarship for Forms 1-4; $600 for a half and $1,200 for a full Scholarship for Forms 5-6. Post-Secondary amounts vary with the institution. However, ANY AMOUNT given is helpful. Make contributions by check to Saint Andrew s with MGLSS Scholarship or MGLSS Post-Secondary Scholarship in the memo line. All funds will then be forwarded to OPERATION BOOTSTRAP AFRICA (OBA). You can also contribute directly to OBA online, or by mail. Contributions can be made in lump sum or installments throughout the year. Perhaps a family might consider this gift of education for a girl and build a relationship to learn of another culture. We rejoice in the news that the new Form 5-6 Science classroom, donated by Dick Swaisgood as a memorial for his wife Jan, should be ready for student use in January And, the dairy project continues with 5 milking cows and the vegetable gardens have been expanded - all under student care! Pray for timely rains and sufficient amounts!!!! For more information about MGLSS, contact Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen. 18 Property Ponderings Property Ponderings An occasional missive from your Facilities Manager First off, let me thank the members that helped clean and fix up the church during September s All Church Work Day: Ed Short, Marv Kananen, Jean Wahlstrom, Gary Rudolph, Guy Feldman, Susan Hegedus, Craig Miller, Ann Thorpe, Judy Thiel, Sandy Andresen, and members of Cub Scout Pack 633. The next annual Work Day will be September 15, 2018 (it s never too early to put it on your calendar). Secondly, as the church wraps up the planning and preparation for our Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), I ve got Emergency Preparedness on my mind: 1) The church will be holding an earthquake drill in the coming months. What should you do in an earthquake? The best practice is to: a) DROP get low to the ground, b) COVER get under a table, desk, or sturdy piece of furniture that can protect you from falling items, cover your head and neck with your arms, and c) HOLD hold onto that piece of furniture so that you move with it. A short video is at Once the shaking has stopped, evacuate the building to the bottom row of the parking lot. 2) I recently completed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training in Bellevue. This a national program that provides citizens with basic emergency preparedness and response skills. The course is 24 hours of instruction and exercise in emergency medical, firefighting, utilities, disaster psychology and similar topics. Bellevue will be holding three classes in 2018; two as eight-week three hour on a weeknight, and one three full day session. It is a significant commitment, but I highly recommend the training for those that want to be better prepared for themselves, their family, neighborhood or city. You can get an overview of CERT in the video: You can sign up for Bellevue s CERT classes at 3) The emergency storage shed in the Southeast corner of the parking lot is nearing completion. It will store emergency tools, food, water and medical supplies in case of a major disaster. Look for an Open House in the coming months when it gets stocked up. Thanks to everyone who helped build it, especially Matt Jainga, Gary Rudolph, John Nelson, Susan Hegedus, and Dick Swaisgood! 4) One facet of our emergency planning has been to mitigate an active shooter situation such as recently occurred in Las Vegas, Texas and Nashville. Although it is an extremely small likelihood, I am committed to keeping this building and its occupants safe. If you hear the police siren alarm at church, you should assume it is a violence situation. The best practice guidance in these situations is to a) RUN If you can get away from the situation, do that. If at the church, run to the Mormon temple parking lot. b) HIDE If you cannot get away, hide where you are: lock doors, shut window blinds, turn off lights. Locks have been installed on many doors in the church. c) FIGHT Only as a last resort, engage the perpetrator. The official FEMA video (moderately graphic, adults-only) is at 5) I am still looking for volunteers as Sunday Server Ambassadors. The intent is to be helpful and hospitable in the Narthex area during services. Also to be watchful for persons or situations that may be concerning, and press the alarm button that calls police if appropriate. If you are interested, please let me know; kurt@salchome.org. If you have questions, please contact me, kurt@salchome.org or Kurt Lutterman, Facilities Manager big thank you to four young men that stepped up to A help the Daughters of Norway when help was really needed! Quinn Myhre, Haiden Hodges, Thomas Gustafson and Collin Feldman provided some great muscle power and some savy tech help with humor and enthusiasm. We ladies were most grateful! Magen takk ( Many thanks in Norwegian), The Daughters of Norway Thank You Personal Care Kits - Thank You! The Health and Wholeness Committee packed 155 Personal Care Kits and 24 pounds of soap to be sent to Lutheran World Relief for the fall drive. Many, many thanks to all who contributed to this worthy cause. Your response was really outstanding. Our thanks also to Thrivent for their generous grant Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA December 2017
