JIM S CORNER As you have already heard, our Religious Education Program (CCD) begins in less than one month. I wanted to take some time to review the importance of this yearly program as it relates to providing education in the faith. You might be wondering how this impacts the grouping of the four parishes for On Mission. For this year, CCD will remain as is with our program here for Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas as well as St. Bonaventure having their own as well as All Saints. Classes will begin on September 9 th. They will be offered for grades 1-8. Classes are held Sunday mornings in Holy Spirit School Building. Mrs. Elaine Magill is our Director of Religious Education and she has been running this program faithfully and efficiently for many years. Beginning on September 9 th, classes will be held from 8:30 AM to 9:45 AM. Beginning with Sunday, October 21 st, the new class times will be 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM. This will be to adjust to the new Mass schedules in our four-parish grouping which begins that weekend. Sending your children to Religious Education is an important obligation for every Catholic family. We are aware that there are many families in our parishes who choose not to participate. I like to gently remind all parents that when you choose to have your child baptized in the Catholic faith, there is a part in that ceremony that is worth repeating. The priest says you are accepting the responsibility of training them in the practice of the faith. Bringing them up in the practice of the faith includes attending weekly Mass and enrolling them in the CCD program of the parish. Costs are minimal and adjusted to the number of children enrolled by a given family. Financial arrangements can be made for families in need. Please call Elaine Magill at or her at pa@holyspiritmillvale.org to register and for any additional information. God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim All Saints, St. Bonaventure Holy Spirit, St. Nicholas

5 ON MISSION GROUPING FOR ETNA, GLENSHAW & MILLVALE It will be necessary that current pastors/administrators begin to brainstorm with the lay leaders of the parish as to ways in which the parish can provide assistance with parking when the interim Mass schedule begins in October. We need to look for ways that the parish can reach out to first-time visitors and assist them with parking. Initially, consideration should be given to parishioners in the grouping who may choose to attend Mass at a church not their own and may be unfamiliar with the location. This would probably also assist parishioners from another grouping who might on occasion want to attend Mass here. The bulletins in our grouping will be providing the parking situation at each parish, i.e., street parking, lot, public, etc. Initially that might mean having some parking helpers. This does not mean that the parking helpers will become valet parkers and park the cars, but rather assisting with directions as to where to park the car. THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don't change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today's first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel's central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural--and not coincidental--that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the "Bread of Life" discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. CHANGES COMING TO MASS AND CONFESSION SCHEDULES WHY? WHEN? HOW? WHY ARE MASS AND CONFESSION SCHED- ULES CHANGING? From the onset of On Mission for the Church Alive! our prayer has been, help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. One element of a vibrant parish is vibrant liturgy. HOW WERE THE SCHEDULES MADE? The interim Mass schedule was created by the incoming clergy team in consultation with current pastors and Regional Vicars. Feedback from parishioners and advisory councils, on the interim Mass schedule, will be gathered within six months after implementation begins. Depending on local customs or needs, each grouping will determine the best way to collect feedback from parishioners. The interim Mass schedules were guided in part by the following: 1) Adherence to no more than 3 Masses per priest assigned to the grouping, per weekend. This includes Saturday vigil and Sunday Masses. 2) Attendance trends for the current Mass schedules 3) Seating capacity of the churches 4) Religious Education schedules 5) Particular pastoral needs of the grouping 6) Insuring adequate travel time between Masses for priests WHEN WILL THE SCHEDULES BE PUB- LISHED AND TAKE EFFECT? The interim Mass schedules will be published in late- August/early-September. The schedules will be posted: 1) In the churches and other buildings of the parish; 2) In the bulletins; 3) On the diocesan website; 4) In the Pittsburgh Catholic; 5) A letter will be sent to registered parishioners. PLEASE NOTE that the Mass and Confession schedule changes will take effect October 15, Stay informed at

6 DIOCESAN CHOIR AUDITIONS Auditions for the Diocesan Choir season will soon be held. The Choir, under the direction of Fr. Jim Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul's Cathedral throughout the year. Currently there are openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. In addition to being good singers, potential members must be capable sight-readers due to a limited rehearsal schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Diocesan Music Office ( ) before August 21. RETROUVAILLE: A LIFELINE FOR MARRIED COUPLES The word Retrouvaille (pronounced re-tro-vi with a long i) is a French word meaning rediscovery. The program offers the tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Thousands of couples headed for cold, unloving relationships or divorce have successfully overcome their marriage problems by attending the program. Retrouvaille offers help to couples experiencing trouble in their marriage. The weekend and post sessions focus on rebuilding marriage through better communication, listening, and understanding. Call today to begin the healing process beginning with a weekend on September 7, Contact Retrouvaille at For more information, please visit COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS & CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY Next weekend, a second collection will be taken up for the Catholic Communication and Catholic University of America Campaigns. There is a special envelope in your packets for this collection. This is an offering to help spread the gospel message. As always, your generosity is appreciated. PRAYER DURING TRANSITION Father of Mercy, during this period of transition help us to grow in unity with All Saints, St. Bonaventure, Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas Parishes. Grant us the wisdom and willingness to understand how our parishes will become stronger and more vibrant in fulfilling the mission of the Church. Assist us in opening our arms to welcome others as we continue to journey On Mission for The Church Alive! Help us, O Lord, to trust in the future you have planned for us. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- Wisdom has built her house; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table (Proverbs 9:1-6). Psalm -- Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading -- Be filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:15-20). Gospel -- I am the living bread that came down from heaven (John 6:51-58). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. --St. Rose of Lima THE ONE WHO FEEDS ON ME WILL HAVE LIFE BECAUSE OF ME The Gospel readings these weeks focus our hearts and minds on the Eucharist, the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church and the central mystery of our faith. The Eucharist as the source of life is true both for us as individuals who are fed by Jesus in Holy Communion and strengthened for the work to which God calls us, as well as for the Church as the Body of Christ as together we reflect the love of God in the world. There would be no Catholic Church without the Eucharist, nor would we be able to share in the life of God without his real and true presence in our lives. Our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! are meant to draw us ever deeper into the mystery of the Eucharist so that we may be built up as the Body of Christ in the world. May our lives and our faith be nourished through our participation in this most wonderful sacrament. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
