Like the disciples at Pentecost, we grow daily in the Holy Spirit. Mission Statement: St. Nicholas Parish is the oldest Croatian Catholic Church in the United States. Our ethnic heritage instills in us a deep abiding faith in Jesus Christ and love for His Blessed Mother. Our church s magnificent murals by Maxo Vanka continue to remind and inspire us to preserve our rich religious heritage. We are nourished and strengthened by the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to share faith, hope, and love with all God s people. Parish & Sacramental Life Please contact the Parish Office concerning any sacraments. New members: Always welcome! Please contact the Parish Office, or website, or by church doors, for a registration form. Infant Baptism: Celebrated at HSP on first and third Sundays at 2:00 p.m.; or at HSP and SNP, on a date and time agreed upon with the Priest. A Baptismal Seminar is required. Adult Initiation: The Rite of Christian Initiation process sees to the needs of those who are inquiring about the faith of Catholics. At a convenient time, to be determined. Reconciliation: HSP: Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; SNP: Saturdays after 6:00 p.m. Mass. Or, at any time by appointment with the priest in church, at home, office, or wherever. Marriage: Consultation with the Pastor at least six months in advance is required. An initial interview must be scheduled, at which time further information will be provided. Anointing of the Sick / Communion Calls: For any parishioner at anytime, as long as the priest is available. You are encouraged to see the priest after Mass, but visits to hospitals and homes also can be made. Please anticipate; call in advance if you know you are going into the hospital in the near future, for surgery, etc. Confirmation: For adults (over 18) who have not been confirmed. JIM S CORNER Our churches can become so familiar and comfortable that we sometimes forget how we are meant to behave in this sacred space. The space inside the Church is sacred not only because we gather for the communal purpose of celebrating the Eucharist there, but also because we believe that God is present in the Eucharist reserved in the Tabernacle. We call it the Real Presence. The Church is never meant to be a stadium or an auditorium, and one of the ways we remind ourselves that we are standing in sacred space is by developing a sense of what I like to call sacred quiet. Sacred quiet reminds us that we are standing in the presence of a loving God. Sacred quiet reminds us to be mindful of those who are praying in this space and not threaten their quiet with needless conversation or frivolous behavior. Sacred quiet helps us to distinguish between necessary conversation and unnecessary noise. Necessary conversation might be the inquiries about the health of a parishioner, the cordial greeting to those around us or the offer of condolences when a loved one has died. Unnecessary noise might be the discussion of our dinner plans, the score of last night s big game or the frivolity associated with telling a joke. It would be easy to suggest a ban on talking in church, but such a ban would be unenforceable and not very Christian. All of us are called to have a sense of sacred quiet, particularly with regards to that space and that which we call sacred. Please limit the ordinary and prolonged conversations to outside of the church. Make every effort to be respectful of the Tabernacle and assume that those who might be in a pew inside the church are there because they want to pray in peace and quiet. When it is absolutely necessary to speak in church, use a subdued, soft tone of voice. We all should remember that when we find ourselves standing in sacred space, we are called to a sense of sacred quiet. God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fear Not How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today's scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that "reigned from Adam to Moses" (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal. Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear--"do not be afraid!" COMMUNITY NEWS PREVIEW DAY La Roche College invites high school sophomores, juniors, seniors, and transfer students to its summer Preview Day on Saturday, July 15. Prospective students will learn more about the admissions process, financial aid and the college s merit-based scholarships, based on SAT/ACT and GPA, which make La Roche College one of the most affordable private colleges in Western Pennsylvania. Another feature of a La Roche education is the nearly-free Study Abroad+Study USA program, included in the tuition structure. While at La Roche visitors will tour the buildings and grounds and enjoy a complimentary lunch. Hear Susan Potvin speak about her faith story, how the Lord has led her and her husband to adopt four children and her oldest son s battle with drug addiction. She will attest to how God can heal and reclaim broken families and how He has led her in her faith to become the leader of the internationally acclaimed music ministry, Living Praise.
