Filled with the Spirit, we as Catholics, communally and individually, worship, minister, evangelize, catechize, and serve the needs of others. Like the disciples at Pentecost, we grow daily in the Holy Spirit. Mission Statement: St. Nicholas Parish is the oldest Croatian Catholic Church in the United States. Our ethnic heritage instills in us a deep abiding faith in Jesus Christ and love for His Blessed Mother. Our church s magnificent murals by Maxo Vanka continue to remind and inspire us to preserve our rich religious heritage. We are nourished and strengthened by the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to share faith, hope, and love with all God s people. Parish & Sacramental Life Please contact the Parish Office concerning any sacraments. New members: Always welcome! Please contact the Parish Office, or website, or by church doors, for a registration form. Infant Baptism: Celebrated at HSP on first and third Sundays at 2:00 p.m.; or at HSP and SNP, on a date and time agreed upon with the Priest. A Baptismal Seminar is required. Adult Initiation: The Rite of Christian Initiation process sees to the needs of those who are inquiring about the faith of Catholics. At a convenient time, to be determined. Reconciliation: HSP: Saturdays at 3:00 p.m.; SNP: Saturdays after 6:00 p.m. Mass. Or, at any time by appointment with the priest in church, at home, office, or wherever. Marriage: Consultation with the Pastor at least six months in advance is required. An initial interview must be scheduled, at which time further information will be provided. Anointing of the Sick / Communion Calls: For any parishioner at anytime, as long as the priest is available. You are encouraged to see the priest after Mass, but visits to hospitals and homes also can be made. Please anticipate; call in advance if you know you are going into the hospital in the near future, for surgery, etc. Confirmation: For adults (over 18) who have not been confirmed. CHRISTMAS LITURGIES Good liturgies do not just happen. It takes a lot of preparation, rehearsal and commitment to see that our Christmas Masses at Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas are vibrant and meaningful. For fear of missing someone, let me just express my gratitude to the Music Directors, Musicians, Choirs, Servers, Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers and many other volunteers. This weekend s second collection benefits a number of programs in our diocese which serve children and young people who depend on our generosity and loving concern. Each parish has a special envelope for Christmas Charities for Children and Youth. Kindly note that this is one collection that is credited to our Parish Share Goal. Please be generous. 5 P NIGHT AT THE RACES will be held on Sat., Feb. 11th, at Holy Spirit Parish Lyceum. Sponsors are being sought for 10 races at $50 each. You or your group/company will be listed in the program and announced before the race. Don t forget to buy a horse and name it for $10 (100 horses available). After those are sold we will have 100 jockeys to name and sell for $10 each. The next 100 sold will be the Horse Trainers for $10. And last but not least are the 100 Pooper Scoopers needed to clean up the track. Each winning horse, Jockey, Horse Trainer, and Pooper Scooper will receive $50. All participants in the races will be announced and listed in the program. Admission for the event is $15. You must be 21 or older to attend. THE PITTSBURGH CRECHE If you are still looking for an experience to enhance your Christmas celebration, please consider visiting the Pittsburgh Creche which is located downtown on the right on the site of the USX Tower on Grant St. This is the only authorized replica of the crèche in St. Peter s Square in Rome. It features larger than life size renderings of the Holy family, the magi, an angel, shepherds, animals and a stable. The figurines have lifelike hands, feet and faces. Any questions, contact Jeremy at or Russ at COMMUNITY NEWS DISCOVERING CHRIST As part of a pilot program within the Diocese of Pittsburgh, St. Maria Goretti Parish (Bloomfield) is offering a nine-week opportunity designed to assist people in deepening their relationship, re-establishing their relationship, or beginning to explore their relationship with Christ. The program is called Discovering Christ. The program is free and is open to anyone and everyone who wishes to hear the good news and personally experience Jesus Christ. The Discovering Christ program will begin on Jan. 10th and run for nine consecutive Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm at St. Maria Goretti Social Hall (300 Edmond St., Pgh, PA 15224).
