Romildo Hrboka, Parishioners SANCTUARY CANDLES LIT THIS WEEK HSP Sanctuary: Parishioners SNP Sanctuary: Langenfeld & Madva Families By: Donald Langenfeld SNP Grotto: Ceh & Vidina Families By: Family FR. JIM S CORNER We have heard the passion of the Lord. We will do well to pose just a single question: Who am I? Who am I before my Lord? Who am I before Jesus who enters into Jerusalem? Am I capable of expressing my joy, of praising Him? Or do I distance myself from Him? Pope Francis Homily on Palm Sunday On Palm Sunday we experience the wonder of palm branches waving in the air and within a matter of days the cries of Crucify Him! Crucify Him! Indeed we enter Holy Week with mixed emotions. This week of reflection should be preparing us for the Triduum. Who am I? It is a good question as we list various people in the shadows of the gospel of the Passion. Who am I? an average person in the crowd, a Pharisee, Judas, one of the disciples, Mary, Pilate, a soldier, a woman who accompanied Mary and the list goes on. Many people watched some silently, some not. Some came forward like Simon to help Jesus with the cross while others just blended into the crowd. Who am I? Am I going to be a person who makes the effort to make this Holy Week a spiritual and reflective time for myself by attending the Masses and Services? Am I going to take advantage of the opportunities offered by our neighboring parishes and within our community? Am I going to make sure that I make time for prayer with my family this week? You know, some people hide from the pain of the Passion and want do go right to the Resurrection. We have the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday evening. It is a powerful ceremony and I always like to say to people if you are looking for a feel-good kind of service, this is not it! Holy Week should lead us to look at all the pieces, day by day, of Jesus experiences and reflect on each and every one. From the high of Palm Sunday, to the lowest point at Jesus death, and finally to the amazement of the Resurrection each day carried with it a unique opportunity to reflect on the role I play in these events. Retelling and remembering these events doesn t mean just telling the story of Jesus, but also bringing it to my current life. How do I prepare for the Resurrection? Is my focus solely on planning meals, dying eggs, baking cookies and watching TV? Like Christmas, we can sometimes focus so much on the actions and preparations that we forget the meaning of the celebration. How can I bring prayer and worship into the actions of preparing for Easter? Who am I? May we spend each day of this week called holy in reflection and prayer of the day ahead. It would be great if each of us could attend all three days of the services during the Triduum. If that is not possible, I challenge each of you to pick just one the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Liturgy of the Passion on Good Friday or the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening. It will be well worth your time! God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

HOLY LAND COLLECTION Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in Catholic Churches to support the work of the Franciscans working in the Holy Land. Christians there rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special day in the Church and our life of faith. The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land. It is vital that we care for the Christians living in the Holy Land in order to maintain a Christian presence there. Please be generous with your Good Friday contribution. BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD Many people whose ancestral roots are from central and eastern Europe know the custom of the blessing of Easter Food. For those who are not familiar with this popular custom, I thought I would provide some history and an explanation of its origin. It occurs on Holy Saturday when families bring decorated baskets of food which will be eaten to mark the end of the penances of Lent and the celebration of the Resurrection. The custom is spreading as more and more families of all ethnic groups want to participate in this blessing rite. So what can be found in the basket? Usually things like butter, often in the shape of a lamb, symbolizing the goodness of life; red or white horseradish as a reminder of the Passion of Christ; eggs hard boiled or dyed symbolizing the tomb and new life; meats such as ham, bacon or kielbasa symbolizing God s favor and yes, you can also find an occasional piece of Easter chocolate. We will be having two opportunities for the blessing of Easter Food on Holy Saturday: at Noon at St. Nicholas and 1 pm at Holy Spirit. If you have never celebrated this tradition, give it a try. Maybe you will find a new tradition to celebrate with your family on Easter Morning!

6 WHEN MAKING FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS The death of a loved one is a most sacred and sensitive time for family, friends and relatives. When a family member passes away, the designated person contacts the Funeral Director directly to arrange the details of the funeral. The Funeral Director will make all the arrangements with Holy Spirit or St. Nicholas Churches for the Funeral Mass after consultation with the family. Once the Funeral Director schedules the Funeral Mass, members of the family will be given a Liturgy Planning Sheet where they will have the opportunity to select the scripture readings, musical selections, readers (if they wish), individuals to bring up the offertory gifts and options like the family putting on the funeral pall. That planning sheet should be submitted to the parish office at least the evening before the funeral. Please note: if the family would like to share words of remembrance (eulogy) about the deceased they are encouraged to do so either at the funeral home, the gravesite or the luncheon. However, Holy Spirit/St. Nicholas will no longer permit words of remembrance/ eulogies in the church at any time. PLEASE NOTE Perhaps the directives as they pertain to Funeral Masses needs to re-stated. Funeral Masses may be celebrated on all days EXCEPT Solemnities which include holy days (Christmas Day, New Year s Day, All Saints Day, Immaculate Conception, Ascension, Assumption). Funeral Masses are also NOT permitted on Sundays, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Funerals will normally be scheduled for 10:00 am (9:30 am on Saturdays) unless special circumstances dictate. For instance, a second funeral on the same day will be scheduled at a time approved by the priest. The Funeral Home is responsible for notifying the parish office that a funeral is requested at a given parish and after consultation with the priest, the funeral can be scheduled.
