Like the disciples at Pentecost, we grow daily in the Holy Spirit. Mission Statement: St. Nicholas Parish is the oldest Croatian Catholic Church in the United States. Our ethnic heritage instills in us a deep abiding faith in Jesus Christ and love for His Blessed Mother. Our church s magnificent murals by Maxo Vanka continue to remind and inspire us to preserve our rich religious heritage. We are nourished and strengthened by the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to share faith, hope, and love with all God s people. Parish & Sacramental Life Please contact the Parish Office concerning any sacraments. New members: Always welcome! Please contact the Parish Office, or website, or by church doors, for a registration form. Infant Baptism: Celebrated at HSP on first and third Sundays at 2:00 p.m.; or at HSP and SNP, on a date and time agreed upon with the Priest. A Baptismal Seminar is required. Adult Initiation: The Rite of Christian Initiation process sees to the needs of those who are inquiring about the faith of Catholics. At a convenient time, to be determined. Reconciliation: HSP: Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; SNP: Saturdays after 6:00 p.m. Mass. Or, at any time by appointment with the priest in church, at home, office, or wherever. Marriage: Consultation with the Pastor at least six months in advance is required. An initial interview must be scheduled, at which time further information will be provided. Anointing of the Sick / Communion Calls: For any parishioner at anytime, as long as the priest is available. You are encouraged to see the priest after Mass, but visits to hospitals and homes also can be made. Please anticipate; call in advance if you know you are going into the hospital in the near future, for surgery, etc. Confirmation: For adults (over 18) who have not been confirmed. JIM S CORNER It s Father s Day and I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Fathers, as they shoulder their Godgiven responsibilities of protecting and providing for their families, an abundance of blessings. This wish cannot come at a better time as our world and our country experiences an unprecedented level of violence and hatred. Unfortunately, much is this is done in the name of God, the Father of all fathers! My Father died at age 51 and I was 18 years old. So I can t really speak to what aspects of fatherhood might have gone amiss as we live today in a world of senseless continual killings here in our country and other parts of the world. And I ask myself, do these killers have fathers? Does paternity have any role to play in regulating the peace and tranquility in our communities anymore? These and many more questions remain unanswered but you have to wonder about the breakdown of the family and a disconnect between fathers and their sons and daughters, and their families. Communication that bridges the gap between fathers and their families can create unity and respect for one another. When we improve and perfect our interior communication with God, we will consciously realize our oneness with others and respect all life everywhere regardless of religion, race, color and other differences. You might ask What does this have to do with Father s Day? It does. And it s not only about giving Dad a gift. Rather it will be about recognizing the gift of caring and nurturing that fathers express when they help put food on the table, teach a child to ride a bike, cheer at a soccer game, smile at graduation, give their daughter s hand in marriage and play silly games with grandchildren. While for a father, Father s day will not so much be about relishing the joy of a job well done as a father (even though they may be well deserved), rather it will be about giving thanks to God for their families and the opportunity to give and provide for them. Let your children know you love them. Tell them you really treasure them in your life. So let us today take some time to pray to the greatest Father of all our heavenly Father. Let us share our innermost hopes, dreams, challenges, temporary setbacks and victories with Him. Let us also remember all those fathers who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. When it is time for communion, approach the line where the priest is distributing the Sacred Hosts and say I wish to receive one of the low-gluten hosts. The priest will give you a pyx (container) with your host in it. Take that back to your pew with you and consume the host. After Mass, please return the pyx to the priest, deacon or the altar sacristan. Remember them in your prayers... Like the mystery of the Trinity, the real presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist can never be fully understood, but can only be believed. Just as the Israelites in the desert were invited to put their trust in God's word to them, we are invited to trust wholly in the word of Jesus. In today's Gospel Jesus promises to give us a share in his very own flesh and blood, and a share in eternal life besides. HOOPS FOR LIFE CAMP to Teach Life Lessons and Basketball Skills. St. Alphonsus Parish s 2nd annual Hoops for Life camp will be held June 26 through 29 to teach life lessons as well as basketball skills to student-athletes. Fr. Kevin Fazio, the pastor at St. Alphonsus, encourages all student-athletes who will be in Grades 5-8 in the fall to attend. The camp will be held from Monday through Thursday on the campus at 201 Church Road in Wexford (Pine Twp). The girls session runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and the boys session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In between sessions, students and their parents are invited to a 20-minute speaker session starting at 6:40 PM in the Ryan Center. The cost is $50 per player and financial assistance is available. The fee includes a camp T- shirt and protein snack bars. Early registration will allow time to order T-shirts.
