JIM S CORNER Most young people in their early twenties did not see the rules and regulations imposed upon them as providing freedom. Like most kids, and even many adults, they saw the restrictions placed on them as enslaving them. Hopefully, they will see that the way they were raised continues to provide them with a means to stay safe, make good decisions, and prosper in life. When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, He, too, was providing a means for His people to be safe, make good decisions, and prosper in life. They too ended up crying to go back to slavery having quickly forgotten the dramatic way in which their loving Father brought them out of oppression and not grasping that the laws being imposed upon them were actually meant for their freedom and not their continued bondage. Our beloved America was fashioned in the same way. It was shaped by Christian forefathers displaying wisdom, knowledge and understanding. We were set up as a nation beholden to the underpinnings of the Judeo- Christian faiths. The forefathers spoke of God-given, inalienable rights. Our forefathers believed in God and acknowledged Him. They planted seeds for future generations to live faith-filled lives, freely and without cause for concern. And they set up laws under which they knew we could prosper. I know that our American History is riddled with injustices and wrongs that need to be righted and yet, when you go to Washington, DC, you cannot help to realize the way in which God s hand was upon these men. We are an amazing nation, young and strong, owing much to our forefathers who understood that within the confines of the laws, rules and guidelines, future Americans could find the sort of earthly happiness that was conducive to life as a Christian and as a nation under God. We are a Christian nation and many of the changes we have sought and experienced have not made us a godlier nation; a vision I believe would have been at the heart of many of our founding fathers. So while we celebrate our nation s Independence Day this week, let us remember that we are only truly free when we understand that the laws that run our nation are meant for our peace and prosperity and only enslave us when we use them to justify our collapse into sinful behavior. And if we really want change, we ought to turn, individually and as a nation, back to God because, as Scripture says, with God all things are possible. Maybe that s the change that will make difference. That s the change that will set us free. God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

5 O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, "Why?" This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today's Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, "Why?" At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: "Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper." Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. PETER S PENCE Today is the Peter s Pence Collection, a worldwide collection that supports the charitable works of Pope Francis. Funds from this collection help victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Take this opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous today. For more information, visit YOUR ABUNDANCE AT THE PRESENT TIME SHOULD SUP- PLY THEIR NEEDS, SO THAT THEIR ABUNDANCE MAY ALSO SUPPLY YOUR NEEDS. These words, taken from today s second reading, highlight the true nature of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. All of us, individually and in our parishes, are abundantly gifted. We each bring to the table a variety of unique characteristics and talents that are used to spread the Good News of the Gospel and bring Christ to others. As our parishes prepare to come together as parish groupings, and as we seek to form and strengthen relationships with our sisters and brothers in the Church, the goal is not for these gifts to be trimmed away and wasted. Instead, we are called to work to unite the many ways we seek to do good in the world so that everyone, youth and adults of all ages, can be support in faith and in life. What can you do to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? What can others do to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? Let us be willing to both give and receive to make our parishes on fire with the love and goodness of God. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the "Military Vicariate." In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the "Archdiocese for Military Services, USA." Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a "schoolmaster," but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the "Nuns of the Battlefield" (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. -Rev. James Field, J. S. Paluch Co. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. --Thomas Jefferson
