JIM S CORNER I am sitting here reflecting on the New Year s Eve Event at Times Square. All of us count down as the Ball drops to announce a New Year has come. For me, I have moved up the traditional date to Sunday, October 14 th when at midnight, the ball will drop on the parishes of Etna, Glenshaw and Millvale and a new chapter in the life of our local parishes will commence. Extensive preparation has been ongoing for years to bring us to this historic and monumental chapter as On Mission for the Church Alive becomes a reality. We know that life is always changing and at some point, whether good or bad, things come to an end. Nothing in this life remains the same; only God is unchanging and constant in His love, at all times. In my 45 years of priesthood, I have really only had four assignments three years as a parochial vicar at St. Michael s, Butler; thirty-three years in special ministry at the Seminary in Orchard Lake, MI; five and a half years as pastor of two parishes in Natrona Heights; and two years and three months as the Administrator here at Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas. You are probably wondering, what are you saying, you are staying here in Millvale at part of the new grouping! That is correct and I am grateful that I will be able to continue to minister at this local church. However, it is a new assignment for me even though I am not physically moving. I will no longer be the Administrator. I will now be the Senior Parochial Vicar. Fr. Jim Gretz becomes the Administrator of our grouping and I along with Fr. Miro and deacons Steve Byers, Steve Kisak and Chuck Rhoads will be part of the clergy team. And back to the reference of a New Year, we know that in the New Year, there are always those New Year Resolutions. Your clergy team has made our resolutions as we embark on this journey. First of all, our Team Vision will be to respond to the call of the Spirit and bring ourselves and others to Christ. We have put forth a set of values by which we intend to operate as your clergy team. These are Trust, Unity, Transparency, Respect, Attentiveness and Prayer. We take these very seriously as we interact with one another as a team. Equally important, these values must be extended to the way we will interact with you. This grouping brings together four congregations to shepherd and all those who for whatever reasons are currently outside of the local churches. Our four congregations have a lot of history, tradition and pride. New staff, new challenges and new horizons will bring the parishes of Etna, Glenshaw and Millvale to truly be On Mission for the Church Alive! Happy New Year! God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God's love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ's love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. PRO-LIFE ROSARY AT ST. BONAVENTURE Will you take 20 minutes to pray for the respect and protection of human life? Please join us on Saturday, October 13th, after the 6 PM Mass at St. Bonaventure Parish. While the event focuses on youth, all ages are encouraged to attend. Participants are asked to donate winter outerwear and non-perishable foods to Catholic Charities for distribution to those escaping the cold. For more information, please visit or contact Brendan Avila at (412) / bavila@ccpgh.org. HE IS NOT ASHAMED TO CALL THEM BROTHERS This Sunday s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, in reminding us how God humbled himself by choosing to become one like us in Jesus Christ, also highlights for us that Christ chooses to call us his sisters and brothers. Through his creating us in his image and likeness and consecrating us with his Spirit in baptism, God the Father adopts us as his beloved children and unites us with each other through his Son, Jesus. If Christ Jesus considers us his sisters and brothers and is willing to sacrifice for us, then we, who strive to love with the heart of Jesus, should do the same. As the new parish groupings take effect and the interim Mass schedules begin as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative on October 15 th, we will likely encounter new sisters and brothers in Christ. May the love of God at work in us be extended to them in our words and deeds, and may we receive the love of God from them as we seek each day to build up his kingdom. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
