And what work there is to do! As your administrator, I have come to notice a number of things. I would like to share those observations with you. When ASP was preparing for On Mission for the Church Alive!, I told the parishioners a number of things that I want to share with the whole grouping. The first is that in this process there is no them, there is only us. We are all in this together. Even I have to work on my language when I refer to the parishes. Additionally we will be engaged in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ passion, death, resurrection, and new life. There will be some suffering and things to which we will die. However, there will be new things and new life that comes to fruition. It worked for Jesus, it WILL work for us! Let s always keep these things in mind. We are all guilty of the same sin presumption. Each of us knows the routine of our own parishes. However, the visitor doesn t have a clue as to the routine be it parking, liturgical action, whatever. You and I need to be diligent in making the stranger feel welcomed, be the person clergy or laity. That s the role of the hospitality team as well as every parishioner and clergy person. If you are interested in specifically helping in this ministry whether inside or outside, see one of the clergy team or a hospitality person recognizable by the hospitality badge they are wearing. Let us all feel welcomed everywhere! We need to view our spiritual life from the 30,000 foot level. There is a plethora of spiritual opportunities in the four parishes. What I mean is that the eight Sunday Masses, eleven weekday Masses, ASP s Miraculous Medal novena, SBP s Perpetual Help Novena, SBP s Monday-Friday Adoration Chapel open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, HSP s rosary before the weekday Mass, ASP s rosary after weekday Mass, the weekly three and three quarters hours of confessions, to name things that quickly come to mind, are YOURS for the taking. I bet you drive further to grocery shop than it takes to get to another parish for one of these spiritual opportunities. PLEASE, I beg you, take hold of these opportunities to grow closer to our Lord. It will make a difference for all of us. See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

5 Around the Diocese and Community VOTE THIS TUESDAY! Tuesday, Nov 6 th, is the mid-term election in our country. Many citizens of our country won t even know about it. Some, who are aware of it, will say I don t vote in the mid-terms as if to say these mid-term elections really don t matter. Much is at stake right here in our own Commonwealth. Voters will decide who will lead our commonwealth for the next few years. As Catholic citizens, we have a moral obligation to participate in the political process. Voting is a right! Voting is a privilege! So be sure to vote on Tuesday. (This is not an endorsement of any candidate). 6 MASS BOOK FOR 2019 FOR HSP & SNP NOW OPEN We have opened the Mass book for the first part of 2019, from January 1 st thru April 30 th. At Holy Spirit Parish, there are still daily Masses available in December of this year. SNP Masses may also be scheduled by calling the HS/SN Parish Office ( ) on Mondays or Tuesdays between 8am and 4pm or stopping by the office on those days and times. HSP & SNP HOSPITALITY GREETERS NEEDED! As we begin our journey as a new parish grouping, we must be able to assure that everyone feels welcome and at home in any of our four churches. Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas Parishes are looking for volunteers to assist in this important ministry. The primary role is welcoming those who come through our doors each and every weekend. Offering hospitality is even a further expression of providing a feeling that truly all are welcome. If you would like more information or are willing to sign up as a volunteer, please contact either Karen Ferrari at (neraferrari@yahoo.com) or Katie Scholl at (kscholl128@mac.com). They will further explain the ministry to you and you can let them know which Masses and at what churches you are willing to minister. PRAYER FOR A WOUNDED CHURCH by Fr. Thomas Berg My God, you are infinite Mercy, you are Love itself. I love you and believe in you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And because I believe in you, I believe everything you have revealed. I believe what you have revealed about this great mystery which is the Church. You know how I struggle. Help my unbelief. Help me to rediscover the beauty and good and holiness within the Church, which is sometimes obscured and hidden by the moral failings of its members. Help me to love the Church not in spite of, but precisely because of her many human weaknesses and failures. Allow me to be an instrument to help heal your Church. Amen. Please pray for vocations. PRAY FOR THE DEAD Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. --St. John Chrysostom FOOD BANK COLLECTING ITEMS FOR THANKSGIVING MEALS North Hills Community Outreach is collecting food items to create complete Thanksgiving Meals to distribute to local families in need. As you know we participate in year-round food bank collections. Items they are looking for include boxes of stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, any dessert mix, muffin mix, turkey gravy mix and napkins. Donations can be placed in the bin at the front entrance of Holy Spirit Church (near the choir loft steps). LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF As we hear these words proclaimed in the Gospel today, we encounter them in the context of last week s massacre of 11 souls as they gathered to worship God. Their peaceful morning was shattered by the violence and hatred of one person whose actions cannot be comprehended with reason. While sorrow fills our hearts because of 11 lives lost and so many more affected by this tragedy, the response in our places of worship and in our communities has not been to fight hatred with hatred, but to overcome evil with love to love our neighbors as ourselves. In times of tragedy, the inspiration of the Spirit of God works overtime to strengthen the resilience of the human spirit so that we not only work to build stronger communities, but also to look deep within ourselves and work to root out anything that seeks to divide us from God and others. This is not only effective as a response to tragedy, but for every aspect of our lives and our relationships we seek to build up. May this call and desire to love our neighbors as ourselves, not only overcome hatred and divison in the world, but also strengthen the Church as we continue our journey On Mission for The Church Alive!
