JIM S CORNER Having a romantic Valentine s dinner might be a bit complicated for Christians this year. School and other Valentine s Day parties will need some changes as well. For the first time since 1945, Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday will fall on the same day. We know all about Ash Wednesday the beginning of a 40 day period of Lent observed by Catholics and all other Christian faiths. On this day, we attend Mass and receive ashes upon our foreheads usually with the words, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. From our Vicar for Canonical Services, Fr. Tom Kunz, comes these Lenten Regulations: Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of The two lighter meals should not add up to the full meal. So, for example, you could skip lunch on Ash Wednesday/St. Valentine s Day and go out for that candlelight Lobster Dinner and you would be following the letter of the law. But are you following the spirit of Ash Wednesday? Ash Wednesday is the full and solemn observation of the start of Lent. Therefore adult Catholics can celebrate a combined Valentine s Day/Mardi Gras celebration the day before. Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Paczki Day whatever you might call it that is the day to go out and celebrate. Restaurant owners will tell you that when Valentine s Day falls mid-week, most people postpone their celebrations anyway. They will celebrate it the weekend before or the weekend after. Hopefully, most Catholics will choose to celebrate the weekend before since the weekend after is already in the Lenten Season. Fr. Kunz goes on to say, All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. For the record, St. Valentine, a third-century Roman martyr, is a recognized saint in the Roman Catholic Church, even though Feb 14 th has not been observed as his Saint s Day since So little is known about his life besides the fact he was martyred, he was removed from the official calendar. Nevertheless, he still sells a lot of greeting cards, chocolates, and expensive romantic dinners! God Bless. Idi sa Bogom. Fr. Jim

Puno vam hvala i Bog vas blagoslovio! TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we've been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today's account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don't just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the selfsacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. LENTEN REGULATIONS Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of Individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays in Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals/receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
